I'm guessing it's just temporary during festival setup to limit soil compaction around the root systems, but if they leave it that way the Chair Tribe will probably attempt to tear them down.

Counterpoint (and believe me, Mumford & Sons is anathema to me):  there is a point towards the end of The New Basement Tapes where Marcus Mumford is losing his shit because he hasn't written his required song putting lost Dylan lyrics to original music.  He stays up all night and ends up coming up with the best song of everyone there.  I was pretty impressed.

I love that "Kansas City" song -- it's fantastic.

This year, I've seen something I've never seen before as they have set up for ACL.  Almost every tree, and certainly every tree on the perimeter of the park, has been fenced off.  Thought that maybe that was just to keep the workers from damaging them during construction, but they were still in place Tuesday night.  If these are still up for the festival, that's a shitload of acreage gone, and especially shaded areas where they used to have vendors.  Very curious to see if they leave these up:

That would be equal parts shitty and stupid.

Fences will get torn down.

Saw him open for Goth Babe in 2023.  Pretty high energy.  He seems to like coming back to Austin.

Had to buy tickets for Sunday so the wife could see the Killers.  I don't think I have heard of another performer on the schedule.
After listening to a couple songs from most of the artists (I have to listen some more), these are the ones on my radar:
Lamont Landers
Tyler Ballgame or Disciples of Christ (I like the OG rap vibe)
Anderson East or Bebe Stockwell
The Dare
Rainbow Kitten Surprise or Wet Leg
Wild Rivers or Gigi Perez
Passion Pit
MK Gee
The Killers
Will set up camp between AmEx and Lady Bird and wander around for the performers on other stages.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Wet Leg are playing at same time? That sucks. I love RKS and have see them 3-4 times. Fantastic. We are seeing Wet Leg for first time in a few weeks in Dallas. Looking forward to it. Think that will be a great show. Gun to my head — I’m probably going to RKS but I don’t think there’s a wrong answer.

Still find it fascinating that Rhian went from Isle of Wight milk maid to ass kicking machine...

Who are Wet Leg? Everything you need to know about the band, their debut album and more - Radio X

Yeah.  The sets overlap except for a 15 minute window.  I'll probably watch RKS for 30 minutes or so and then head back to AmEx and watch the end of Wet Leg's set.

Remember - if you're not sweating it out at Zilker Park, there are two channels on Hulu showing ACL.

Just got home from being out. Anybody know if I missed Dr Dog on the channel? They’re currently showing headliners Luke Combs and Hozier but are supposedly running until midnight. (Hozier is just terrible.)

He was there a couple years ago, but he played a couple hours before the headliner.  I enjoyed Luke Combs' performance.

I’m no fan of Combs per se but WAY better than Hozier, who sucks shit through a straw.

Man that crush between rock island and the ‘tent formerly known as beer tent’ was Lizzo-levels for that EotS/Hozier handoff.  Recall years ago when there used to be a stage there, it was often a choke point…but we got caught up in that mess tonight, and it was borderline dangerous.

Moral of the story is when you’re making a big move across the park to close out the evening, don’t let your friend Chris navigate.  Fuckin Chris.

I think The Lumineers blowing up between their booking/placement and the festival was the end of that stage.

He has 3-4 good songs.  Other than those the dropoff tonight was precipitous.

Empire of the Sun always puts on a great show.  It was a similar set to what they played earlier this year at the Moody Amphitheater.

Liked MJ Lenderman.

Panda Bear... would not see again.  Repetitive and low energy save for a couple of songs.

Sorry... Role Model... not for me.  Apparently for the 80% female audience, though.

Confidence Man is great if you like dance in music.

Definitely recommend The Animeros for local psychedelic chicha/cumbia

...and yeah, Hozier, I was ready to go.

So how much Emergen-C and coconut water y'all enjoying today?  Ooooffff

Today's radar:

Hotline TNT - Always up to check out some shoegaze/noise pop

Inoha - Saw them at SXSW earlier in the year - good indie rock

Ocean Alley - possible but they will most likely lose out to...

Joey Valence & Brae - aka early Beasties and the Beatbox stage is a good stage with a chance of shade

Modest Mouse

La Lom - maybe but mostly overlaps with Modest Mouse although some time in the Tito's tent shade would be nice

5:30 - 7:30 block is a hmmmm block of Magdalena Bay, Backseat Lovers, LP Giobbi.  Which one??

Sammy Virji apparently had a great DJ set at Coachella

The Strokes, duh.  Easy choice for me and I think Sabrina will be a mess.  Very happy that I pretty much don't have a reason to go to the Amex stage today.

Stream times the rest of weekend that I’m interested in:

Today
Modest Mouse, 5:20
The Strokes, 10:10
The Backseat Lovers, 6:15
Japanese Breakfast, 10:40

Tomorrow
Rainbow Kitten Surprise, 4:15
Wet Leg, 5:10
Phantogram, 10:10

Yeah that sounds about right.  They can’t control an artist’s popularity between booking and showtime, see Lizzo / Chappel Roan / Lumineers / etc…but EotS really surprised me as they’ve been around for well over a decade.

Based off Reddit chatter already, wondering if Passion Pit is going to be a massive spill out of the tent.  Not likely to cause an actual crush, but it can jack up traffic there with food/bathroom access.

Have loved that guy since the Manners day, so blows my mind that these youngins may be lining up for him…possibly without a tour band?

Who knows, I’m a grumpy bastard with all the corporate / bungalow / profit squeezing shit they’ve been doing.

We may try to get to Passion Pit early.  We'll see.

As for Empire two of their biggest hits have 1.3 and 1.1 Billion streams.  Their third biggest song is at 850 Million.  Sabrina's biggest sits at 400M although she has more monthly streamers.

Also, Miller Lite at sunset is consistently one the best stages at ACL

We watched Role Model.  He understood the assignment and is a cheese ball.  I told my wife he looks like Steve-O and some fangirl behind me got upset because now she can’t unsee it.

Dylan Gosset was great as was Dr Dog.  I liked Willow Avalon but it’s too big for her.  Had a Kelly Willis vibe.

Amex cabanas today so comfort outweighs quality, although may try to catch Modest Mouse.

Man Japanese Breakfast put on a killer set this evening. They were on point having been on tour behind the latest album for a while. A shame it was way under attended as folks were staking claims for Strokes and Sabrina Carpenter. Saw the full Strokes set and the last 30 minutes of Sabrina Carpenter. They were both exactly what I had anticipated with no surprises. Talk about two wildly different approaches to state production though. Crazy.

Saw at least all or part of:

Ocean alley
Modest mouse
La Lom
Latin Mafia
Magdalena Bay
Doechii

The Doechii-Japanese Breakfast-Strokes run was the best of the day.

Did The Strokes have their full light show?  Overhead arrays of superbright LED cans, literally hundreds of bulbs, along with some floor level shit?  I saw them Wednesday and it was one of the best light productions I've ever seen.  Every song was monochromatic -- mostly red, blue, or green -- and kinetic enough to cause seizures for those prone to such things.  The band was essentially invisible because they were constantly backlit.

This?

Joey Valence & Brae was such a great set.  Full on energy and the crowd was really into it.  Just old school hip hop.  Loved it.  Modest Mouse and The Strokes both sounded great and we sat through 30 minutes of Doechii and she killed it.  Finally what a great DJ set by Sammy Virji.  Great day!

Yeah they sounded great.

For those going W2, my suggestion specifically for Friday would be to enjoy your day, go have a great time at Empire of the Sun (my choice), Rilo Kiley or Dr. Dog and then wrap up your night by skipping the final shows to go take a leak, get a drink or go look at some merch.  You can then go catch a night show somewhere or get a drink.

Between being a big pop star and the unending Taylor Swift rumors, I figured Sabrina was going to be a madhouse so I stayed with my group instead of bouncing to Strokes.  The red message on screen and dude on the PA telling everyone to step back was a new one to me, probably trying to be proactive after Chappell last year.

This was my 20th, missing only 2013 as we were in maternity with our newborn son…and this is the first time that serious discussions have kicked off about breaking the ‘buy early bird 3 day, buy Chuy’s parking pass, get in early to setup home base in the shade, and be all in’ default plan.

Friday night as we were shuffling through the EotS/Hozier crush, staring at a bright Range Rover sponsor booth, lamenting the loss of draft beer, breathing dust, carrying a $17 Coors…I wondered what VIP is like.  Then I look at the VIP stands and the $30k bungalows, and they’re all jockeying for position at the rails…and fighting

They’ve made a ton of improvements over the years and my core memories there are fully intertwined with my life in Austin…but as prices just get to stupid levels and I get older/less tolerant to heat/dust, can see a point where we just wing it with a 1-day after lineup is released.

Made it through all three days.  I'm in bad shape today (bounced back after day 1 and 2, not so much day 3)

If I just think of the highlights yesterday, The Dare was an absolute kick ass show although someone should get fired for scheduling him in the daytime.  WTF!?

Followed The Dare with Wet Leg, got nice and close and the show was amazing!  They have such a good stage presence.  Love this band since they broke out in 2022.

Passion Pit - waiting 40 minutes inside a ridiculously stuffed tent (crowd outside was massive) and... meh.  Sound was off.  We made it through 5 songs and left.  Really poor location choice and I don't know. They didn't sound right.

Disco Lines looked like a madhouse but I bet it was awesome.

Caught some of Phantogram which was great

Saw John Summit from the Magenta Lounge - crowd way bigger than The Strokes.  Great vibes and very cool pyrotechnics.  Definitely recommend that show.  Crowd size just kept growing and growing.

...and I'm spent.

So glad I'm volunteering next weekend :/

Yeah, the two bands my wife and I wanted to see were The Strokes (wife) and Wet Leg (me).  Once Sabrina C was announced for Saturday it just became cost prohibitive.  I couldn't in good conscience say "hey babe I know we can't really pay for 3-day or even Saturday tix aftermarket, but how about Sunday tix to see the band I want to see?"  So we drove all over west Texas for comped tix for The Strokes.  Eh.  Terlingua was cool.

Dude... you're going to love their show.  They're so good and I love how they can really rock out aside from their more popular songs.  Looked at the openers... INOHA is pretty good.  They're getting their footing and are SATX boys slowly making their name.  Show them so love.

Cool. I'll mention it to my wife. Know nothing about them or the other opener Mary in the Junkyard. Will INOHA be the band immediately before Wet Leg?

Hilarious that Wet Leg can fire through a 19-song setlist in an hour. I wanted to see them badly when they made it through Dallas last year -- or the year before -- but it was part of a "mega" show that also had Courtney Barnett and maybe Boy Genius on the bill. It's hard to fight through a double-headline bill these days, much less three although Wet Leg's set was probably even shorter then (lol). I love some of Barnett's catalogue but usually get bored during a full set of hers.

I expect the Wet Leg show to be loud and fun AF.

Don't know how the openers will work since I've seen Wet Leg twice and both times at ACL ('22 and '25).   That said, very interesting to read about Courtney Barnett because I really like her music but have never seen her live.  Duly noted for the future.

Meanwhile... they know how to start a set!  This is a band that still very much feels like they appreciate how far they have come and their fans.

I really dig Barnett's softer, pop-ier stuff like "Depreston" and "Avant Gardener." When she starts to get really hard rock heavy is when she loses me.

I told my daughter I want to see her band tour with Wet Leg and Little Simz.  Predictable response: "holy shit Dad, you know who Little Simz is?"  Yeah, I'm not a total neanderthal.

When the lineup came out earlier this year, we decided to sit this year out.  Then the Killers replaced Doja and I received an immediate text from the wife.  Got tickets to Sunday W1 for her to see the Killers.  I didn't know any of the other acts - but learning new bands is one of the things I like about music festivals.  Listened to the acts on Spotify off and on for a few weeks and narrowed it down.

This is how it ended up:

Got to Zilker around 1:00 and my wife was immediately turned around because of a non-conforming backpack.  I took the chairs and set up in the shade under the tree across from the beer tent.  From there we listened Lamont Landers, Chezile, Anderson East, The Dare, and most of Rainbow Kitten Surprise.  I wandered around a bit and caught some of Geto Gala and Flowerovlove.  Packed up and headed to the Beatbox stage and set up under the tree for Wild Rivers.

When Wild Rivers was done, we headed over to the AmEx stage to prepare for the Killers.  T-Pain was up and it was crowded.  Parked the chairs at the back, listened to T-Pain, and waited for it to clear out at the end of his set.  Moved up closer for the Killers show and listened to MK Gee in the interim.  The Killers opened with a decent rendition of Whiskey River and then played a bunch of songs that my wife knew and a few that I recognized.  It was the least attended final act that I have witnessed with most of the yutes opting for John Summit.

Enjoyed everyone except MK Gee, but that was just background.  All-in-all a decent day.

I went all three days.  Highlight for me was Friday Panda Bear>MJ Lenderman>Cage the Elephant>Dr Dog.  Cage and Dr Dog absolutely crushed it.  Modest Mouse and Strokes were fun on Saturday.  Wet Leg and the Killers were great.  The Killers opened with Whiskey River and also covered Always On My Mind.  Both covers were excellent.  Passion Pit would have been fun but their crowd was waaaayyy too big for the Titos tent.

Interesting... I was wondering because we could tell John Summit had a massive crowd that just kept growing as the set went on...
