In May, which coincides with the change in hitting coaches, Semien is hitting .163 with a .464 OPS. He has one extra-base hit for the month and one double for the season. His .484 OPS for the season makes it one of the worst starts by any MLB regular in the last decade. Since 2016, only three other players have had 200 or more plate appearances by the end of May and an OPS below .490. For context, the former Ranger Chris Davis, whose rapid decline in 2018 was legendary, was at .483 at the end of May.

It's looking like the pipe dream goal for this season is now to just at some point start looking somewhat like a MLB squad with both pitching and hitting, and have enough imrovement in the second half to not be entirely shitty and think, "WTF, I think they're on the right track, let's roll with Bochy one more season and the core of this team and see if he can get the old magic back."

My tin foil hat theory is something happened at Colorado last year. They got swept and Semien and most of the team basically went to shit after that. Wins, losses, hitting, stats.

2-14 stretch starting with that series. Bats went real shitty.

It doesn't look like sweeping them this year reversed the Colorado curse.

Are you saying we became the Rockies?

We have the worst OBP in the league. Wow.

Last night they could have tried just not swing at anything until somebody is on second base...maybe, and it couldn't have been worse.

They should try it. Every few games they'd stumble into a pitcher where that fucked with his head and he walked in a run or two before getting pulled.

Also when I'm hitting coach:

"Ok fellas, gather 'round. I'd like you familiarize yourselves with the Arozarena HBP Method. He's already got 10 this year and led the league with 22 last year.

Let's get beaned."

I got bored at lunch yesterday so I did some math. If we had league average ERA (3.99) our Pythagorean W/L would be 21-36. That would put us at 3rd worst in the AL, 4th worst in MLB. If you look at the 1973 Rangers team (I only picked them because they had the worst record for a 162 game season in franchise history) they won game 21 on June 20th.

Point is: this team sucks. Don't let the standings fool you. If we don't start swinging the bats it's only going to get worse
