lol. Traffic not as bad? A major city with no loop, shitty east-west thoroughfares and limited crossings over a river that cuts through the middle of town. Austin’s infrastructure sucks dong.

Yes.  I will go to my grave arguing that Austin traffic is not as bad as Houston.

Was there 1 1/2 weeks ago... took me 50 minutes to go from one client to my parents with NO traffic.  Next day went to another client and took me 30 minutes to go 1/2 mile.  If y'all haven't figured out how to avoid the worst parts of I-35, I don't know what to tell you.  Anyone bringing LA into the conversation... LOL

...but that's total numbers. Houston is bigger.  OK... fatality rates:

San Marcos and Galveston seem about right.

Stupid oversized pick-up trucks for every office worker, bus lengths between vehicles at a light, so only 3-4 people get to go per light, is the biggest problem right now.   Cell phone use delaying traffic should be an automatic license suspension, 3 violations should result in the death penalty.

It's never worth getting mad at people on the road. The only time I find my blood pressure going up is when I left late for somewhere I need to be. Now I just accept that I will arrive when I arrive. And if it's that important that I arrive on time, then I leave early. Then if I run into a train crossing or a slow driver at a light, so what.

I learned how to drive in Houston and then lived there for almost a decade after graduating from college.

Driving was a fucking beating,  but like @Brisketexan said, you at least knew what you were getting into- and were used to it!

I moved to Austin 20 years ago and initially was annoyed as fuck and super frustrated by how the majority of drivers were just "Zombie Cars" with nowhere to be- it was a fucking beating. After a few weeks of it sinking in (2005ish) it occurred to me that "oh, I don't have to drive like an asshole here."

20 years later I'll still take driving in Houston over dealing with Zombie Austin drivers.

That number has to be negatively affected by the dumbass drunk tourists that drive off the seawall every year.  Also I think we are averaging 2 or 3 fatalities per year of golf cart riders being killed by drivers (not sure all of those are the car drivers fault because there are a lot really dumb ass tourist golf cart drivers acting like the city streets are their personal playground.)

Houston is more likely to sink from all the fatties

I’m reluctant to share any Houston driving tips, but I feel that it’s always manageable if you give yourself enough time and there are no road closures. If 610 or one of the interstates is closed and you run into it, you are fucked and should just go home.

I think many of the people bitching about Houston traffic live in the suburbs, commute during peak hours, don’t know the city well, and won’t drive fast enough to get around problems.

If you don’t know back ways to get out of NRG, and Minute Maid/Toyota yet you’re behind help.

I get why people with families live in the suburbs, but 45 minutes in no traffic just to get home is fucking crazy.

My traffic complaints are : no one knows how to merge in this city, weekend traffic and turning right out of middle lanes. The latter is insanely dangerous, yet I see it often. If you drive defensively, treat it like a war and remain focused, you’ll be fine. Also, whenever possible drive early. Driving late doesn’t help much.
