We're doing a family dinner for my wife's birthday on Monday.  Probably 10 of us.  Reservations are a must.  She's not into super pricey joints, so something moderate.  I already have Moonshine locked down as an option.  Mexican or TexMex would be great (Fonda San Miguel is booked though).  Italian might work.  French Quarter Grille appears to be closed on Mondays.  Still, Cajun might be a good idea.  We used to like Clay Pit but it has taken a nosedive.  Any thoughts?

My initial thought for a big group with possible diverse tastes is usually Jack Allen's but Moonshine sounds better to me

Good call, but I know my wife agrees with you, so since I have that reservation in the pocket I'll avoid JA's.  Same goes for Hyde Park Bar & Grill.

before I got to the second line of your post moonshine popped into my head.

Anytime I've had coworkers come from out of town we've gone there and they've handled groups from 10-20 without an issue. Great appetizers to share and a diverse menu that everyone should be able to find something.

Intriguing, but no reservations that I can see.

We've called and reserved before for a big birthday group but we had over 20.

Cool, thanks.  I'll call.  Looks like a good option.

At y'all's age, Luby's is a good option.  I bet they'll reserve a big table for you, I've seen birthday celebrations there.  Probably 90th birthdays, but a party is a party, man.

Full disclosure:  I've never eaten at a Luby's.  My wife, who was born and raised here (Austin HS Maroons holla) got dragged there by her dad so much that she never even wanted to go, and I wasn't about to argue.  Our semi-equivalent when I was a boy was a Sirloin Stockade -- obviously tilted more towards "steak" -- and I'm still having flashbacks.

Hopefully don't need to start a new thread, I'll throw this one to the surly masses and see what y'all come up with.

I'm looking for suggestions for a birthday dinner next weekend, Friday 12/12.  We do this annually with friends, 7 or 8 total, always a nice or fun atmosphere place, nothing too crazy expensive though.

I'm trying to find a new place to go, somewhere we haven't done a dozen times.  Any cuisine is fine.  North Austin preferable, but could go all the way downtown.  Examples of places we typically go are: Siena, Salty Sow, Odd Duck,  Justine's, Peche.  Back in the olden days Fabi + Rosi was a real go-to, I was so sad when that place closed down.

Ideas welcome.  Obviously this is short notice and I won't be able to get reservations just anywhere, it is what it is, I'm indecisive af.

Just go to Salt Trader's and call it a day. Or if you're feeling particularly ethnic Special Noodle would be fun.  It ain't even remotely close to fancy though.

Heh thanks.  Yeah, we're not talking $200/person here, but maybe a little fancier than that. :)

Hey, me too!  It was the rare (and disappearing) elevated dining option that was affordable for someone early in their career and on a date.  Now everything is taco trucks or omakases.

Bulevar looks to have a 7:45 available and won't let you down.  Kemuri Tatsu-ya has a 6 pm and 8:30, and there's always Ranch 616.

Resy has Lenior outside, and I'm underwhelmed by it but other people seem to rave about El Naranjo.
