For a 70s AOR FM radio vibe, I submit "More Than A Feeling" by Boston, even though y'all are tired of hearing it.

I think being blown away the first time you heard Boston is pretty typical. I know I was.

I was wondering how long that would take

That album came out when I was a kid, but I was already halfway into a lifelong obsession with popular music.  I had a hand-me-down AM/FM clock radio prior to getting a proper stereo, and when I first heard that track my mind was blown.  It really was a different sound than I had ever heard.  Said clock radio was basically this:

Vintage (1970's) Soundesign Flip #'s Clock With Am/Fm Radio Model #3545B - Picture 1 of 15

My buddy, and first bandmate, bought that album right away and were listening to it in his living room. His dad (cool, buy dad standards) was in the next room. He came in and said "do you assholes realize that all of these songs sound exactly alike?"

He was correct.

In my opinion, Boston's biggest flaw was the fact that Tom Scholz couldn't write a decent lyric to save his life.

I don't agree that every song sounds the same.

First three to come to mind were:

Thunder Road (Born to Run), Runnin' With The Devil (Van Halen) and Hell's Bells (Back in Black)

Mr. Self Destruct. Every few seconds you think it can’t get louder and then it does…to the point you are wondering if you’ve blown your speakers.

In 1989, I was in UT Law and clerking part time at a firm. Another clerk and I were at some bar on or near Guadalupe drinking beers and shooting pool one afternoon -- I can't recall the particular place. The bar was mostly empty and had a jukebox. I was checking out the song selection and noticed that it had Straight Outta Compton. This was before NWA had really blown up. I hadn't heard the track at that point, but I had read in some music rags that it was a monster, so I was curious. I put in some $ and selected it and some other tracks to play after the jukebox was done playing the songs it was playing at the time. I mentioned to my friend that I had Straight Outta Compton waiting to play, and he just shrugged his shoulders -- he had never heard of NWA. About two minutes later, the place starts filling up with frat boys and sorority girls. Turns out that they had scheduled some mixer there that afternoon. The place went from dead to full in about 5 minutes time.

Straight Outta Compton came on blasting, and it was like a switch had been flipped. Everyone in the place was like, "Who the hell is this?!" You could tell instantly that track was going to be huge. The whole bar was buzzing.

Side note: The sorority girls in particular were digging it. My friend started talking up a couple of them, telling them, "Oh, yeah, this is NWA, a group out of Compton, CA and this is the new track off their new album, isn't it great?" blah blah blah -- basically trying to impress them with his (fake) knowledge about NWA in the hopes that one of them would go home with him. It didn't work, and I laughed at him for a long time after they walked away.
