  1. Liberty University to UT-Austin. Well, that's gonna be eye-opening.
  2. surly lawdogs, how is this legal? From the justice.gov website:
  3. I thought he might have been referring to the cumulative price rise over Biden's 4 years, but even that doesn't track. I don't have it in me to dig too deep, but the average annual inflation from 2021-2024 is reported as being 4.7%, 8.0%, 4.1% and 2.9%. This works out to a net price increase of 21%. (Yes, it's a crude calculation.) Alternatively, one can look at the median consumer price index between Feb 2021 & Jan 2025 and find that it increased . . . 21%. Huh. Whodathunkit.
  4. Why, just once, can't a reporter follow up with (for instance) "can you explain the effect of a stronger/weaker dollar on imports and exports?"
  5. Disregarding the fact that IQ is a flawed measurement of "intelligence", I would love to see left/right or Democrat/Republican spectral distributions of IQ. Hey to the Bell Curve.
  6. Doc is WAY underrated, presumably because he was seen as Johnny Carson's outlandish foil for so many years. I got to see Wynton back to back nights -- one with his jazz quartet, the second with a symphony. Mind blown.
  7. That looks like Donald Trump's NY apartment.
  8. What? It's as if you don't understand the whole "transaction". Yes, it was paid with inflation.
  9. Outside of the blatant extortion, what is it you can't believe?

    Ozzy has passed.

    That is a fantastic shot.
  11. As a very young pup I saw Maynard in the round, circa 1977. Peter Erskine was his drummer, right before he split for Weather Report. I was nowhere sophisticated enough to understand what I was seeing, but holy shit Erskine was unbelievable. Years later, Maynard's band came through the Wendy's I worked at late one night. I was semi-gobsmacked. Stan Mark stepped up to order and I asked him why he played a black trumpet. He was a total dick -- "because I can". OK, fucker. That was the very last time I let someone's fame clutter my thoughts. I might have spit on his burger. (Might have.)

    Ozzy has passed.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. I've already copped to not being anywhere close to a Sabbath (or even metal) guy, but I've seen plenty of live clips of early Ozzy, and the guy had a very good voice. Maybe not as pyrotechnic as Halford or Dio, but the guy could sing.
  13. I so hope that's real. Everyone just needs to keep piling on.
  14. Not in my time, but every HS band played some Bill Chase for sure.
  15. CSO -- that's badass. My horn prof at UT (Wayne Barrington) was 3rd chair under Fritz Reiner.
  16. The bar was "good" sports, and Illinois has a fighting chance of winning the B1G in football this year (if you don't mind the lardass coach).
  17. Who are you referring to? Elias Haslanger went to Austin High, same class as my wife, he played sax with Maynard for a cup of coffee. I'm not familiar with too many trumpets from Austin other than Ephraim Owens.
  18. Actually it's not that boring. I've spent a lot of time in Champaign-Urbana. My cousins grew up there and my sis went to grad school there. It's an outpost but those kids have a lot of fun.
  19. Illinois is pretty kick-ass.
  20. I'm holding onto the hope that UT's rep will still be decent when my 2 kids graduate within the next year. I know that's incredibly naive and their degrees (and mine) will slowly become tarnished. I don't care about my degree, but theirs? It's over.
  21. I wonder if the last two national champions might suggest otherwise.
  22. BD was basically an NBA team playing against Austin High.
  23. Those shows were what led me to join Phantom for about a minute and then switch to Cavaliers.
  24. A little old school drum corps in tribute:
