  1. Weah is injured, which is a shame. I really want to see a Weah - Sargent - Pulisic front line in action. Excited to see Pomykal and Dest called up for this.
  2. While not "secluded," some of my favorite hill country fishing is actually in the Austin suburbs. The San Gabriel and Brushy Creek are both worth exploring. Also check out Reimers Ranch on the Pedernales. If you feel like venturing further, the Blanco and Llano are beautiful.
  3. Gloster looks promising at LB too.
  4. If it were me, I would push them out of the nest. Important bonds are formed freshman year. They will have a larger social circle and enjoy the later three years more if there as freshman. Also, Stillwater is a small town w friendly people. It’s as easy of an introduction into the real world as you are going to find.
  5. Rawlings is my favorite guitar player of all time. And the Dave Rawlings machine shows are fantastic, especially when Willie Watson and John Paul Jones were in the band. Harrow is an OK album, but the starting point for Welch should probably be Time the Revelator. That album is stunning start to finish. Here is some vintage Welch/Rawlings goodness:
  6. Ol' Jerry actually had some great policy ideas too . . . like that time he suggested to the governor that Iowa should start a war on poverty instead of a war on drugs so the police can bother me
  7. The real kicker here is that Derka has actually eaten at Black's multiple times in the past . . . he just forgot about it because it was back in his rapping days.
  8. I have about $2-3k worth of rather specialized fishing equipment sitting in my garage that I have been too lazy to sell on ebay -- a bunch of rods and reels worth $200-300 a piece. Anybody have experience with the shops that sell your stuff for you (particularly in the Austin area)? I would love to avoid the hassle, but the few I have looked at online seem to charge up to 50% commission, and I am guessing I will still have to exert some level of effort just explaining how to price everything and what to say in item descriptions.
  9. Pick a big six team. More games will be televised, you get to take an interest in champions league, top four race is meaningful, etc. That said, they all have their downsides: - Chelsea: No history before 2003. Owned by a shady Russian oligarch that bought the team's success. Longtime captain and fan hero was a racist who slept with his best friend/teammate's girlfriend. - Man City: Like Chelsea but a shady Arab sheikh instead of a Russian. - Arsenal: noted fans include Derka and Osama Bin Laden - United/Liverpool: Like picking the Yankees or Lakers. Liverpool are at least entertaining to watch right now. - Spurs: Everyone will assume you picked your team based on a Bill Simmons article. Historically mediocre team that will likely go back to being that way once the current coach leaves.
  10. It would not change anything. Republicans still talk about welfare queens 20+ years after they got the welfare reform they wanted. The great thing about targeting low information voters is that you can sell them anything. The boogymen don't have to be real. Besides, they would still have Soros, Pelosi, the Obamas, etc. to blame for everything.
  11. If you watched more soccer it would become pretty obvious. There are stories out there of the USWNT losing scrimmages to u15 and u17 boys teams.
  12. That used to be a Stubb's but they changed their name due to legal threats by the bbq sauce company. I have never tried it but would expect the quality to be somewhat similar to the Stubb's on Red River. So probably not great.
  13. Ginny's is still fine if you can hit it on a night when its not full of tourist. Poodle Dog is now much cleaner, has fancy drinks and a more hipster clientele. Still got the shuffleboard table though, so thats cool. I have not been to Dry Creek in a few years, but I suspect it has not changed much.
  14. If the alternative is Bradley, then I feel great about it. Trapp is at least of an age that he could be useful in the next world cup (hopefully as a backup to our starting midfield of Adams, WM, and Pomykal).
  15. Are the tacos from turf n' surf eligible for this thread? If so, they win.
  16. Sazon is really good. I don’t remember the price, but I don’t recall it being as expensive as Geronimo.
  17. Look at the county by county data in the link you posted. Looks exceedingly rare in the coastal counties most of us fish. Highest incidence were Bexar, Hidalgo, and Harris counties, so I don't think the spike in vibrio cases has much to do with fisherman contracting it on the coast.
  18. I would not want to confront the hard evidence on my fishing spending. I don't even know how many fly rods I have -- I am scared to do an exact count but suspect it is north of 20. I cleaned a closet recently and found several cool reels and spools I had totally forgotten about.
  19. I have not fished with Kevin, but I have his book on fishing the Hill Country. Very useful for anyone looking to explore the area. It has gps coordinates and descriptions of areas to publicly access most Hill Country rivers.
  20. Virtually every river in the hill country is worth fishing with a fly rod. The hill country has several species of fish -- Guadalupe Bass and Rio Grande Cichlids -- that are great fly rod species but tend to be ignored by guys who fish conventional gear. I frequently fish the San Gabriel, Bull Creek, Brushy Creek, and the Blanco. The Lower Colorado can also be phenomenal at times if you have a kayak. For west Austin, check out Reimers Ranch. It is popular in Feb/March for white bass, but you can fish it year round. i would bet there are some great spots on Barton Creek as well. As for gear, you could cover most hill country fishing with an 8' 4wt. Later add a 7 or 8wt for fishing the coast. Folks at Sportsman's Finest can point you in the right direction. I also really like the Living Waters shop in Roundrock -- those folks are very helpful and have developed some great fly patterns for fishing this part of the state.
  21. Never bet against aggie in an online poll.
  22. You could do that in 4-5 days if you like time in the car. The drive from Napa to Carmel is spectacular if you go across the Golden Gate and then take Hwy 1 all the way down (through Half Moon Bay, Pescadero, Santa Cruz, etc.). In and out of Oakland would not be bad, or you could book the return flight out of San Jose and shave off some car time. If you do the Hwy 1 drive, then stop in Pescadero for lunch at Duarte's. The correct order there is a Guinness, bowl of soup (mixed artichoke and green chili), sourdough bread, and a slice of Olallieberry pie a la mode. You can also stop off in Half Moon Bay for a drink at the Ritz, which has nice fire pits overlooking the ocean. And, if you are into surfing, you can stop to take a look at the surfers on Mavericks. Alternately, if you want to maximize your time in one place, Sonoma has great wine and a beautiful coastline.
  23. That is actually the simple explanation for all of the Austin used to be better sentiment. People associate their college years with Austin. Then when they have a real job, kids, no free time, crushing responsibilities, etc. . . . Austin seems to have changed and isn't quite as much fun anymore.
  24. That is the one thing keeping me from being enraged by what they are doing with Sargent. Soto has been great. Hopefully he ends up in a Dortmund shirt as rumored.
  25. I think so. You dont have a ton of tall mountains the way you might in the Rockies. Instead it is a few huge volcanoes coming out of relatively flat surrounding land. Google Mossbrae falls and the McCloud river to get a sense of some of the other scenery highlights in the area . Some pretty epic fishing nearby too.
