    Is Punk Dead?

my favorite micro genre I learned about recently is "orgcore", which is used to describe mostly melodic punk bands that...I still don't know the parameters but "I've had two semesters of college and now I listen to Hot Water Music instead of NOFX". I think "org" in the name refers to online music sites that like bands of that style/ilk. Someone described The Swellers like that, which is how I came across it.

yeah, def not weird to have the tension over who you are and who you want to be, but maybe weird in how it manifested with kurt also that's reminding me of one of the hardest lyrics of all time - you can throw me in the colbert county jailhouse you can throw me off the wilson dam but there ain't much difference 'tween the man I want to be and the man that i really am

    Is Punk Dead?

I'd love to read a.... smart person discussing Kurt Cobain's comments (like the above, or famously how he felt about Nevermind and Butch Vig's production, etc), his actual music, and his ethos and identity. How those things played together, because from my not very studied and very much armchair perspective I think that Cobain had some weird cognitive dissonance between who he was and who he wanted to be. Or at least, who he felt like he was and how the actual music he made reflected on that. I can't find the original article in a ten second google but from here referring to some interview about the 10 albums that changed his life where Cobain compares The Clash and The Sex Pistols - I was thinking about that quote because of what Jimmy correctly said about the fact that Nirvana was a pop band (of course you could correctly apply that label to a great many bands across different genres of rock). I remember that quote because I so strongly disagree with Cobain's top line assertion (The Clash do not suck and in fact are the best, and the Sex Pistols are important but not good) and also because... again without having thought about it too hard, if you sat a head trauma victim who has forgotten everything down with the discographies of the Sex Pistols and The Clash and had him draw a line from Nirvana to one, I think it would go to The Clash. Again, haven't actually thought about that too far, but broadly I think a lot of what Cobain had to say about bands who made music that was accessible is him turning his feelings about himself outward. also I'm so fucking glad we don't have Kurt Cobain's twitter also I can't remember if he got specifically into what I'm saying, but Chuck Klosterman may have actually done just that in his recent book on the 90s

  5. Did anyone share this one? I don’t see it - https://gimletmedia.com/amp/shows/reply-all/o2h8bx A man has an earworm from his youth in his head for years and nobody else recognizes the song at all. He goes to incredible lengths to track it down.
  6. If I get the grocery shopping done on Saturday, I have a brief Sunday window. of course kid #2 on the way…
  7. boom, fuck y'all. i got my weekly 2 hours of actual uninterrupted time so I wrote another verse and knocked it out, 2 minutes of chart topping magic (that needs a complete rework to make an actual chorus happen and fix the bridge) maybe i'll put down a lead guitar or some sprinkles. NOW THAT I'VE GOT TIME. thanks @Paul Wesley for starting this, I'm having fun. I had to install garageband on my ipad and macbook, I've never even used it.
  8. Saw this and honestly it explains a lot
  9. Homesick Texan - https://www.homesicktexan.com/salsa-salvation-ninfas-green-sauce/ I’ve made that recipe a million times since I was a teenager. It calls for way the fuck too much sour cream - I just spoon some in but if I was guessing I’d say a half cup. This is the first time that I tried it with just tomatillos (no green tomatoes available, so I used ten tomatillos instead) and it turned out fine. If there’s a better version of the recipe somewhere I’m down to try it.

Pearl Jam to Creed is the easy obvious comparison due to vocals but perhaps is a bad example. You could easily say that virtually all popular rock after Nevermind was influenced by Nirvana. Which of course is an even crazier oversimplification but it is fairly true. My main point is that the “punk rock sound” has not disappeared - it has been folded into mainstream music over and over again.

To be clear, I said “directly influenced by”, not “only influenced by”. I don’t think it’s straightforward 1-2-3 at all, just that you can both trace that and find it in the sound.

    Is Punk Dead?

We could argue about it, but it would be silly. The shitty early 2000s modern alt rock sound evolved directly from grunge, which evolved directly from the 80s alternative and hardcore bands that evolved out of the 70s punk scene.
  13. yeah really this - i came out of the resume review with a few base resumes for different types of jobs, and the tailoring was matching the job title and then putting the key words into the top and emphasizing relevant accomplishments

    Is Punk Dead?

My point is more that... Creed may suck but you can draw the line from punk through pearl jam to them. You could draw a box around something and call it "the punk sound" and declare it dead but it's silly. There's a musical punk to pop gentrification cycle that just brings more and more punk in all the time. Jimmy made the super salient point above about how diverse young people are now in what they listen to - maybe you could argue that "rock" is dying but I think even that is missing what's really happening.

Everything “alternative” and therefore everything “modern rock” is punk influenced. So is everything in the next “indie” wave of alternative, and the subsequent things influence by that.
  16. can we take this woke budget discussion to the budget thread and this woke both sides discussion to the hunter biden indicted thread?
  17. I wrote a verse off my chorus, and I like the verse but now the chorus sucks and I can't get off the progression. Feeling like this is going to be one of those simple loud soft things that tries to cram 2 verses and a bridge in before you notice that there's only one and a half parts.
  18. I’m making tortillas tonight and I saw a full thing of tomatillos at the store, so I decided to get my ninfa on.
  19. I think there are a lot of people who have internalized the values of the world's fattest 6'3" 215 pounder and are simply dishonest as part of who they are. Much bigger category of people can't deal with the cognitive dissonance between what they believe to be true about their moral selves and their own role in creating Trump and what that has done to America. If you can clutch your pearls and latch on to indignation that people might somehow connect Trump to stalwart members of the party that he leads, you can avoid thinking about that altogether. You can even describe yourself as independent to sever that connection in your head while making no other changes at all. you could read the above and also latch on to something something "holier than thou" as one other subconscious tactic to avoid dealing with your own internal inconsistencies. the fact is that people of every kind do stupid things and act against what they know to be right and make unfortunate choices, etc etc etc. that is a part of being human that is consistent for everyone. part of being wise is remaining open to your own failures and revising your views and even values as you learn more
  20. fuck we should have gotten him to join the shaggy guitar tontine
  21. what do you mean by "you all people" as this is the non-political news thread, for folks who have a difficult time keeping up with the news has there been any indication of when one of the trials could get underway? Quick google indicates that one of the Trump codefendants in the Georgia one just got a date set for Oct 23 - https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-trial-date-fulton-county-georgia-fani-willis-proposal-october-23/ - is it at all likely that Trump's trial will start on a similar timeline?
