  1. This movie isn’t really my cup of tea, but deriding it for being “derivative” is about the silliest thing I’ve read in the last two pages.
  2. Well in your defense, McDonagh has downplayed the war/metaphorical reading of the movie in most of his interviews.
  3. Hollywood can’t pass up the opportunity to make a social statement, so it’s going to choose a movie primarily concerned with the search for meaning in a meaningless existence over the overt social statements in Triangle of Sadness, Women Talking, Tar, Avatar and countless others who weren’t nominated? Top notch analysis. Edit: fuck, Uncle beat me by a split second.
  4. Would you rather be forgotten for being a nice but mediocre person or remembered for creating/achieving something lasting while being an asshole? What is the purpose of life? Not much can be deeper than that.
  5. Out on Peacock this Friday I think. I’m continually surprised how much I use Peacock. Nope, She Said, Violent Night, SICK (which rules), and Ticket to Paradise are all streaming now.
  6. What will win (what should win): Best Picture Everything Everywhere All at Once (Tár) Actor in a Leading Role Austin Butler in Elvis (Paul Mescal in Aftersun) Actor in a Supporting Role Ke Huy Quan in Everything Everywhere All at Once (Brendan Gleeson in The Banshees of Inisherin) Actress in a Leading Role Cate Blanchett in Tár (yep) Actress in a Supporting Role Angela Bassett in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Kerry Condon in The Banshees of Inisherin) Cinematography All Quiet on the Western Front - James Friend (yep, although NOPE should have been nominated for sure) Directing Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans (Todd Field, Tár)
  7. The theater I was in was dead fucking silent when the credits rolled in that movie. People just walking out shaking their heads. Alex Garland is awesome.
  8. I’ve been in charge of feeding our newborn from 12-6am the last 4 weeks, so I’ve had plenty of time to rip through some remaining 2022 movies on my iPad. Below are some recent watches Aftersun - terrific movie. One of the best of the year Decision to Leave - terrific movie. Stars at Noon - Margaret Qually, grown up. Both Sides of the Blade - Denis’ second movie of the year. Good not great. Vortex - fucking depressing. Yikes Happening - fucking depressing. Armageddon Time - worth a watch I think. Benediction - good, but really slow. I knew nothing about Sassoon. Nanny - watched this horror flick the morning before nanny interviews. Decent. Ending was meh. Confess, Fletch - I laughed Cha Cha Real Smooth - I liked Shithouse but this one was just ok for me Munich the edge of war - not perfect but kept my attention The Stranger - Liked it The Wonder - Florence Pugh, why not Bros - a no for me dog She Said - ok. Stilted acting and dialogue at times. The Cathedral - aight if you were born in 1987
  9. Just ripped through this over two nights. Hell of a show, and nice of them to use my college playlists for the soundtrack. excellent use of Let Down in the last scene.
  10. I saw a preview for this in a theater last weekend. The CGI looks outrageously horrible. I know the film making in marvel movies is typically garbage, but this one might take the cake.
  11. Correct. People need to get used to the idea of Banks, Conner, Majors, Campbell, Jones. If we can upgrade Conner, fanfuckingtastic, but probably not happening unless Neto or Williams takes a huge leap. And if Connor is somehow at tackle, it means Jones moved on and Williams isn’t ready, which is the worst case scenario. He does not have the ability to be an above average college tackle.
  12. Agree with this. I’m sure Flood would love to upgrade the center position, but it seems really unlikely. Priority one is getting Hutson out of the starting 5. Seems very likely Campbell is able to supplant him this off-season based on end of year play. Then the question is whether some combination of Williams and/or Neto can upgrade the Connor position, or if you just live with his limitations.
  13. Joining the SEC with a defensive tackle depth chart filled entirely with lower 4 star recruits is certainly going to be interesting.
  14. I don’t buy that for Luka, which sucks for me as a Mavs fan because that roster ain’t it, and they have very little flexibility to drastically improve. Bad vibes of LeBron’s first stint in Cleveland.
  15. This. Where I live, it’s Michigan fans>>>>>>>tOSU fans>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Georgia fans, and barely anyone knows what TCU is. TCU all the way.
  16. How have we come this far without the central message from the movie: “Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner.” I heard Michael Mann on a podcast say that the original script was written so that Hanna had a coke addiction, but they eventually edited out all the scenes with him doing blow. Makes Pacino’s performance much easier to understand.
  17. IT Update: “We aren’t making promises, but sources are quietly confident that Arch Manning’s arrival has flipped a switch with Quinn Ewers. He may never reach Hudson Card’s ceiling, but early returns are trending upwards like the stock of an unprofitable tech company in 2020.”
