  1. I agree. But are we kink shaming now?
  2. If it lands her North Carolina . . . I think that was Donkey Teeth.
  3. I'll save it for the forthcoming thread, but with the older one, it entailed a total willingness to try to understand what it's like to be a teenager in 202x, the knowledge that we cannot begin to understand what that is like, and, for a very uneasy period of time, psychiatrists, therapy, and medication. A lot of it was about finding his interest, with which a friend group follows, and the growing up process. Knowing that other friends were dealing with almost identical situations with their kids helped with parental despair. It was helpful to hear from one good friend, who said, "Do you want to feel better? Same story with all three of my kids." His kids are doing great now too. We had to resist trying to force things. As my mom once said about me, "At a certain point, I stopped trying to raise you right and just decided to raise you." My younger son is a different story (so far). Plays tennis, which has a built in friend group. But he has other friends that he has grown up with. Super chill. Works hard, etc. Just different people, both of whom are amazing humans. /edit to add: Diversity never was an issue. They went to magnet schools in elementary and middle schools, both of which were "out of our district." They both always had diverse friend groups.
  4. Mine went to/are in the public school system here, and while there are plenty of exceptions, their friend groups have tended to be quite progressive. That tracks fairly closely to my friends who live in other parts of the country with GenZ kids. But yes, it is depressingly red here in east Texas. But voter turnout has been record-breaking this cycle, which, hopefully, means the margin is shrinking.
  5. As the father of two young men, sign me up for this discussion. Both currently are healthy and well-adjusted, but it has been a lot to navigate.
  6. Correct. Thanks for catching that omission on my part. Also, if you do this, you are, thereafter, registered in the county in which you cast your limited ballot.
  7. If you have a kid going to school in Texas away from the county in which they were registered (or if you recently moved out of the county in which you were registered) and that person still has not registered in the new county of residence, that person can vote a "limited ballot" (federal and statewide elections) at the main polling place in the new county of residence. In Austin, that means the Airport BLVD polling place. This little tidbit just saved my son an 8 hour round trip drive home to vote. Hopefully, it will help someone else.
  8. Just realized he can vote limited ballot (Federal and Statewide offices) in Austin at the Airport Blvd polling place during early voting Who knew?
  9. Ass, gas, or grass. Nobody votes for free.
  10. There are several at every law school---smart enough to get the grades and foot in the door but not enough baked-in common sense and hustle to be of any use to anyone else.
  11. We thought we had my older son set up with an absentee ballot. Turns out, despite his filling out the info, they only sent him another application. He was home and could have early voted last weekend but didn't realize the mistake until he returned to Austin on Sunday. But he is determined to vote and got permission from one of his professors to leave early on Thursday to make the 4-hour trip home to vote that afternoon. He then will make the return trip to Austin that same day (early classes on Friday). He's going to earn that sticker. I hope there are a lot like him who are going the extra mile (or 450) to turn Texas a little more Blue.
  12. Nice. There's a store on ebay that will make little foot cups you can screw into the table top so it doesn't accidentally get bumped and fall off the table. Good insurance. Enjoy!
  13. I got to check out Brisket Love in Lindale last Friday. Brisket was very good, but the house-made sausage not so much. I'll need to try the ribs next time, but definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. Not to far from I-20.
  14. Give Big Phil money for the Blue Smoke Smoker. This thing is ridiculous for what it costs.
  15. I got it home safely. This thing is a well-constructed beast. Got it burned in/seasoned today. My wife said that it was "pretty" and that she "liked the patina.". Love this woman. She's a keeper

Well, my night is done. I'm 37 minutes in. So hooked
  17. Which part of my, "this is a bit" .gif was not clear?
  18. I've got a friend in Chicago with two kids (boy and girl), and both of them loved UT didn't apply because of "politics." /choice is the 99% reason for his kids and others //meanwhile my older son who probably is, somehow, more liberal than Dad, is enjoying Austin like we all used to and isn't worrying about politics in the least. ///shrugs
  19. Sorry, I edited my post to make what was going through my mind funny. See above /edit: So I believe a more appropriate response would be, "BLOW IT UP!!!! BLOW IT BACK TO GOD!!!"
  20. Nah. I think most of us revere good CFS. Back in the early 2000s, I thought Lucile's in Ft. Worth did a pretty fine job with it, if I do say so myself.
  21. I got the official word that it's ready to be picked up tomorrow, on my birthday, no less. Here's the first picture of my pit (as opposed to a pit). I like the patina. More pics to follow. And for anyone in the area, come over to ETX Brewing tomorrow evening at 6:30 for the Second Annual [DCBC]toberfest. We had a good crowd last year and plan to have this party in my honor every year oontil I Kroke. Prost!
