  1. There's not a single intellectually honest person who disagrees with this. Not even Abbott himself.
  2. It's poorly written. The English department coulda give them some help with those. Then again, based on what I know of folks in the English department, they'd have told the admin to get fucked.
  3. I'm pretty sure a buddy of mine drove a shitty 1984 Ford Pretext back in college. Fucker didn't even have a cassette deck.
  4. Perhaps you are unaware of the negative history of a psycho bitch named Mary Poppins? We can't have that bullshit in our state, nosiree.
  5. Thanks for posting the full set of rules. The only thing that's vague (and could be read as violating the new Texas law) is the "no coming to campus without authorization." The law makes it clear -- EVERYONE is "authorized" to be on the public spaces of all state university campuses. It may be enforceable to issue trespass warnings and prohibitions against certain individuals based on specific events, but then the rule should say "coming on to campus when entry has been legally prohibited." 1) there are still ways to handle violations of said rules. Foremost, only take action against the actual INDIVIDUALS violating said rules. If it's Jane's tent, then clear out Jane and her tent. If Jim is wearing a mask and refuses to remove it, remove Jim. You don't get to "punish" the entire group for individual violations. 2) they can't charge or require "permits" (the statute our governor was so excited to sign....when he thought it was only to protect right-wing speech....says exactly that). I think there CAN be a "permit" or "pre-clearance" process that is voluntary, and that the university can ask people to follow in order to help protect the university, the free speech process, and the demonstrators (e.g., if the subject of a demonstration is likely to draw a counter-demonstration, and maybe have a heightened risk of violence, it's good to give UT a heads-up so they can be on guard against shenanigans that could harm any protestors). None of this shit is in play, though. UT is going full-on heavy handed jackboots because that's the message the university wants to send.....when the message is not one the governor favors.
  6. Got it -- had not seen the strict "no tents, no masks" rules. And yes, the challenge would have to be to those rules in particular. The no masks/no concealing your identity is an interesting discussion. I am surprised that our current leadership would put that in place, being that it would put some of their preferred groups at risk. But then, I strongly suspect the policy will only be enforced when the State doesn't like the content of the speech. That is, the rules are pretextual, and not applied in a content-neutral fashion. We shall see.
  7. Well, from what I have learned from my reading of Surly, people will have sex in them. Sex tents are the scourge of our time.
  8. What explains it? A constant bombardment of "WORST ECONOMY EVER! BIDENOMICS!" from the entire right-wing media sphere. Human beings will believe anything if it is relentlessly pounded into their heads.
  9. They are correct. You know who said so? The Legislature and the Governor. We the Motherfucking People. It is a public space, they are allowed - by both a statute and the First Amendment - to peacefully assemble and express their views there, subject only to reasonable time, place, and manner restrictions like a curfew (no overnight camping). That's the whole fucking point. It IS "our lawn." All of us. Which includes them.
  10. It's not a slippery slope. If the reasonable rule is "no overnight camping, including structures like tents," and overnight starts at 10:00 pm., then you tell the folks there that they're free to conduct their activities till 10, then they'll need to clear out. And we're asking them to do it nicely. Y'all can come back and do it all over again starting at 8:00 am tomorrow. If it hits 10, and they aren't clearing out, then tell them one final time, then clear them out. This shit isn't hard. It's only hard if you want to go full-on fascist because you don't like their viewpoint.
  11. Seems that if these folks had planned ahead, they'd have an application for TRO ready to file down at the courthouse restraining UTPD and the DPS (and anyone else necessary) from depriving them of their right to speech in violation of that statute. Note: IIRC, UT does have some sort of "curfew" on such activities (meaning no overnight "camping") which would probably pass muster as a reasonable time place and manner restriction under the statute. But that's only effective after something like 10:00 pm. Right now? I don't see how any reasonable time, place, or manner restriction is being violated. It's a bunch of maybe 50 students, on the grass, chanting slogans and shit. They could be there chanting "free Palestine," "OU Sucks," or "bring back G&M Steakhouse [I'd be there with 'em]," it don't make a shit.
  12. Good catch. I was thinking with the "in modern times" modifier, but I still didn't recall Ike and Stevenson.
  13. We've also never had a back-to-back rematch before. Unprecedented shit fo sho.
  14. Odd. We definitely got more than that, busted rain gauge or no, the empty bird baths were overflowing, and that doesn't happen till we get over 2 inches.
  15. We got what had to be around 3+ inches at our house (rain gauge broke the other day, so that's an estimate). Was steady and we got some good standing water and runoff - the kind of stuff that would have been great for the lakes. Seriously, we're missing the target by just 40-50 miles, every damned time. LT went up only 500 a.f. yesterday. That's nothing. Every drunk pissing off their boat over the weekend would make it go up that much. It's frustrating as hell to watch.
  16. Eeew. No. That sounds racist-y. I mean, you were right, at least back in my day. But still…you should be ashamed of yourself.
  17. I get that. What I don’t get is that there is zero awareness of someone behind them flashing their lights and even honking at them.
  18. Just cracked open a fresh bag, had a small bowl plain, no salsa even, for a little salty snack. Don’t know how they make them so different, but they’re perfect.
  19. Then what, pray tell, do YOU think the primary factors are driving our inflation and GDP numbers?
  20. Yep…and then net that against each country’s projected GDP growth to get the whole picture (esp as they are partially companion measures). Most every economy would love our mix of inflation and GDP.

Last night was the first game where AFC played like the better team pretty much the whole match. No big groaner mistakes or stupid lapses, just pretty sound football. That was the turn I’ve been looking for. Wins are great, but the last few have been because they were lucky. This one was because they were good.
  22. 1) I presume some sort of DEI initiative. 2) “Cunts” are one of the groups in the “needs diverse representation” class, right?
