  1. Speaking of light pollution... Bird window strikes in Chicago How hard is it for businesses to turn off their lights when closed, at least during migration, but really all the time?
  2. Feeling surprisingly zen after that gut-wrenching loss. It always sucks to lose ot ou, but it's a pretty big fucking wake-up call and we get an extra week to get our minds right. A second loss changes everything, but barring a miraculous season by WVU, this just gives us ammunition for the sweetest revenge in the B12 title game
  3. I don't know, I already see a 90 creeping back into my 7-day. I'll be damned if I'm going to let that slide in mid-October without bitching about it.
  4. Hilarious that the Pac12 is the best conference in their final year of existence. These teams look like trash.
  5. On Cover 3 they said that the contract does terminate... but there is nothing preventing them from writing up a new one.
  6. Would be cool if maintaining a livable planet was considered as valuable as insuring someone can turn a profit for any green initiatives.
  7. I think it's about time to do away with historical averages and just go by averages over the last decade. At least our expectations will be lowered.
  8. The two week forecast for Austin is essentially identical to current conditions, save for higher lows on the back end. We're having fun, right guys?!?
  9. I might be getting back into the game after a 3 year hiatus. My 15 month-old loves looking at fish (for now), and I'd love an excuse to get another tank now that I will finally not be moving every year or two. I've already convinced my wife we need to do more than a beta bowl. Now I just need to see if I can bump up from a proposed 10 gallon to 20+.
  10. https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/animalkind/2023/08/17/maui-bird-conservation-center/70591965007/ Cool story of a brave woman who may have saved 2 native Hawaiian birds (Hawaiian crow- extinct in the wild, akikiki- i think fewer than a dozen pairs remaining on Kauai) from extinction during the Maui fires. Climate change and the subsequent elevation climb of avian influenza has devastated Hawaii's native songbirds. Releasing genetically modified mosquitoes that produce sterile offspring has been discussed, but I don't believe approval has been given, although I want to say this has been done elsewhere in the US.
  11. I doubt this will benefit a middle-ager like me(how did this happen!?!?), but as someone trying to break into a career working in/for the natural environment, that's awesome to see. There should be a lot more stuff like this out there.
  12. I started in 06 and I definitely remember some version of the minotaurs. Feel like it was there for at least my first 2 years
  13. No picture of the bird, but here's a bunch of white dudes looking for it while my 1 year-old slams veggie straws to delay the inevitable meltdown. Great birder watching today.
  14. Just successfully chased Travis County's 1st record of hermit warbler at Mills Pond. When a successful outing is seeing your target bird for maybe 2 seconds, you start to wonder what the hell you're doing with your free time. Nonetheless, a life bird for me and #395 for Texas! At this snail's pace, I should hit 400 by the end of the decade.
  15. Legit storms in 78665 overnight. Everything else seemed to wake the baby up, but crashing thunder apparently soothed him to sleep.
  16. One of the weirder Texas records, behind the Steller's sea eagle that was seen once here, and I think might still be cruising along the Northeastern seaboard.
  17. That's a damn good bird in central Texas. Congrats!
  18. I went to a bar in Austin to watch the game with some friends. Some aggies started talking shit when we celebrated downing a punt inside the 5. I talked shit back, as they were losing to Miami. Perhaps I was too kind to them afterward, but they paid our tab. I was at aggy for scoreboard in 2012 and I intend to return the favor... when we get to crush their hopes and dreams as conference foes once more. Thanks, y'all! That was actually pretty cool.
  19. How many straight points is that for Sabalenka, 10?
  20. I got married April 2018 just outside of Austin. It was 40 degrees. The. Entire. Day. The wedding and reception were outdoors. Really wasn't expecting to add stand-up heaters at the last minute. Naturally, the days before and after were beautiful. At least I got to wear a jacket!
