  1. What do you do at these villages? Just walk around and take it in? Are there restaurants to have a glass...err bottle...of wine?
  2. I will be in Rome Sept. 17-19 for work (Tues-Thurs). The original plan was to meet my wife in Geneva on Friday and tour whatever we could in Switzerland in 5 days and return home on Thurs. The rub was I have other work obligations on Sun and Mon, including a private underground tour of the LHC at CERN. So the trip would have been a little broken up. For a variety of reasons, I've decided to bow out of the Sunday and Monday stuff and my wife and I are now considering her meeting me in Rome and us driving up the west coast and settle in Tuscany for 4-5 days. 1. Any must stop places along the way? 2. The number of choices of places to stay in Tuscany is overwhelming. I think it would be fun to stay in a farmhouse, and I'm exclusively looking at those. 3. Undecided on if staying close to one of the more well known places like Siena is a good thing, or should we stay in the middle of complete nowhere that is still 30-45 minutes from some of the more famous towns as well as the beach.
  3. Steak. Like a steakhouse steak. It's either under seasoned and/or overcooked. I've stopped ordering steaks at steakhouses, and as a result very rarely eat one anymore.
  4. I have no idea. Comparing the Aeros to the big 3 pro sports team is stupid
  5. Well the Aeros are minor league, which is why I left them off. SA has exactly one major sports team. Shitting on the Texans when there is no pro football to watch in SA is a bold strategy. Houston also has an MLB and MLS team. I'll wait for the list of major SA sports teams.
  6. 1) LOL. "The water is toxic" is a great counter coming from a guy singing the praises of San Antonio, which is home of the most disgusting and overrated "river" in the state. 2) To each his own, but you asked for some ideas of things to do 3) OK 4) The big 3 pro sports teams made the playoffs last year. Having access to pro sports, and competitive pro sports at that, is definitely a PRO for a city. Professional soccer available as well. Someone mentioned the museums, music, ballet, etc, but don't forget the rich diversity of food. Houston has some fantastic restaurants. Galveston isn't that far away if you want to head to the beach for a day. If you don't make an effort to take advantage of what Houston has to offer, it's a boring city. But you could say that about a lot of places.
  7. Agreed on both counts. He had a hard-on for A&M for several years, and the fact that he is now picking Texas to make the playoffs tells me we'll likely go 8-4.
  8. Yea, but the flip side to that is you got 10 extra years on the front end, where presumably you are more active, healthy, etc. Maybe not as much money, though. I'm 42 and my kids are 8, 5, and 2. I'm quite happy we waited as long as we did. My wife went to grad school that enabled a great career. We were a lot more financially stable than if we had started right away. That relieves a lot of stress on marriage. And I absolutely think chasing 3 little boys around at my age keeps me younger.
  9. "Alright, who wants an 80 degree beer to wash down their salmonella taco?"
  10. The other piece of advice I have is to mind the gap.
  11. I use an ATM to get cash once there. Rates are usually ok, and the fees are less than the money exchange places. I use my credit card as much as possible to conserve cash for when I really need it, but my CC doesn't have a foreign transaction fee. She should check with her credit card company on that point. London is expensive, and if she's going to be there for 7 days she's going to spend some money. If she's on a tight budget, she should probably spend some time doing basic research on how much things cost, like hotel, things to do, etc rather than having a co-worker ask vague questions on the internet.
  12. Pretty sure the banquet beer in that picture ain't craft stuff.
  13. Is their beer still like 3% alcohol? What a fucking wasteland.
  14. They're going to do what they always do. 7-5 or 8-4. Then their dog shit schedule will enable 9-3 in 2020 and 2021, with the proclamation of "we're back". Their OOC schedule in 2020-2021 is a complete joke, and they always get to play USC from the SEC east. They have enough talent and a weak enough schedule to avoid any complete debacles.
  15. Or he's turned on LHN during one of the 500 times they play a game from either 2004 or 2005.
  16. Sounds like a great trip. We drive to Crested Butte every summer, and this year we're leaving on Aug. 8th. We don't tow anything, but we are packed in like sardines. Wife in front, 3 boys (8, 5, 2) in the back seat, and a dog in the way back, along with a rooftop carrier on the Outback makes for a pretty funny picture. We usually get there are quickly as possible so we can spend 7-8 full days in CB, but one of these years we're going to take a more scenic route and take our time. The sand dunes, Palo Duro Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns...all things I want the kids to experience. But not this year. My kids have iron bladders and we make it to CB in one day with only 3 stops.
  17. Right now she's logging into Surly to start a thread called "boyfriends and the stupid shit they do"
  18. 3 cracked ribs, but those weren't really a problem. It was the internal damage the resident did when putting in my chest tube. My wife was watching the procedure and said it looked like he was stabbing my side trying to get the chest tube in. Then he starting digging with his finger. I think whatever bruising he caused internally was my biggest issue. I also strained a muscle between my neck and shoulder that is slow to heal, but it wasn't a problem today. It's a long story, but I ruined a trip my wife and I were supposed to take to Moscow because the doctors strongly advised me not to fly 6 days after my accident.
  19. Finally back on the bike today after taking a nasty fall beginning of June that required an overnight stay in the hospital due to a partially collapsed lung. Felt good, but I am not in biking shape.

    Shit My Kid Says

Had a goldfish die today. Middle son (5 years old) decides burial method of choice will be to flush Goldie down the toilet. As Goldie is circling, I make the remark that he's now swimming happily in goldfish heaven. My 7 year old chimes in with "well Goldie's heaven is in our septic tank surrounded by our poop."
  21. You've missed the entire premise of my question.
  22. Honestly I don't have a problem with our HOA. If anything I think they are too lenient, but if I had my choice, that's the side I would want them to error on. I really just started this thread to see if there was any expertise on the board on this topic. "No Fireworks" is not enforced in my neighborhood, and I have never seen the emails deter anyone from lighting them, and it won't stop me from doing them in the future. It was really just a curiosity question. I am responsible about how I do fireworks, and I'm teaching my kids the same. Safety, cleanup, respect for the time of day, etc are all things I'm teaching my kids. And you set them off on July 4th and Dec. 31st only. No Jan. 4th on a Wednesday night
  23. I know what I signed. But there are also plenty of things in life that don't hold legal water just because someone declared them so. That's what I'm trying to figure out. Before any surgery the patient signs a piece of paper that says they won't hold the doctor or hospital responsible for anything that goes wrong. But you can't disclaim you're own negligence, and malpractice lawsuits happen every day in this country. Non-compete agreements are a big gray area as well. What about illegal parking and towing signs? I hate to give Txtow any credit, but he did open people's eyes to the legality of different towing signs. I haven't seen anything definitive that says an HOA can enforce any rule that happens on a publicly owned street in the neighborhood just because they said so.
  24. The whole reason I'm asking is because I got a chuckle out of their bi-annual email stating that fireworks are against the CC&Rs. The email looked like an party invitation. Fireworks in the background. "Happy 4th of July! Don't set off fireworks." The topic is a powder keg on Nextdoor every December and July, and it got me wondering why they've never tried to enforce that rule. You could drive one time through the neighborhood and hand out a dozen fines. Got me wondering if the reason they don't do this is because they can't actually enforce the rule even if they wanted to. Thanks for indulging me.
  25. 1. You missed the part where I said as long as I'm abiding by the laws of the folks that govern the road, I should be fine. 2. I don't block the road. If there are headlights, fireworks cease until they pass 3. What does blocking the road have to do with the legality of an HOA trying to enforce a rule outside their jurisdiction? If I'm blocking the road, I would expect that to be a police matter, much like if someone is speeding through the neighborhood. True, and if those rules have been shown to be enforceable, that may provide the real answer to my original question. That's a similar situation where the HOA magically has authority over something they don't own just because they said so. Doesn't make sense to me, unless there was some other law being broken. Also seems like a lot of work to enforce that. I assume someone has to run the plates to find the owner of the car in order to make it official. Unlikely to be enforced if a car is sitting out for 1 night. Right, which really forms the basis for my OP. Why is really legal (or more to the point does it hold up in court) for them to arbitrarily say you aren't allowed to do something in a place where they have no ownership.
