Texas Women’s Basketball 2022-2023: Get on board or get out the damn way

"We were missing Sonya tonight who brings a lot to the table. I'm very concerned, she spent the night in the hospital, I was there
early this morning and I think she's going to be fine. It's nothing major major, but obviously it kept her out of the game tonight.
She'll be living with our trainer the next few days. She's day to day and it will be whenever she can tolerate it.
It's something that happened last week and it's just been something that's nagging her - that's kinda where we are right now. It
didn't happen yesterday in practice or anything.
You hate it for Sonya, she wants to be out there more than anybody - it's her senior year"

Rori made shots tonight because she's been in the gym working on it making a hundred 3's a day in practice.
Rori said she's feeling confident (shooting) said she's taking more time to focus on those specifics.

Vic - "Rori is going to be in trouble tomorrow because she fouled out and I'm not very happy about it" - Rori smiles...
This is his hardest year for injuries in his 38 years.

Vic - proud of what we did at the free throw line
Shay filled in well for Sonya tonight - played 40 minutes
Sonya shooting 38% from three - Shay 41%

Some have said the issue for Sonya is a thigh contusion from the Kansas game. - Not stated as such in the interview

That's kind of funny because she really did not want to take the first 3 she made.  But then she got some confidence from making it.

TCU is bad bad - we should be able to win easily without Sonya. Let her continue to rest.

Texas is 10 in NET, 12 in RPI and has the #8 SOS.

5-6 in Q1 games
7-0 in Q2 games

We should be somewhere in the 9-13 range in tonight's reveal if the committee is focusing on NET and SOS.  Considering teams head us like Utah (41), Iowa (31), and LSU (112) have some really weak schedules.

It's going to be interesting what happens when Morris comes back.

I think she's much better being the 6th man with either Holle or Muhummad starting at the 3.

I think part of Rori's problem is sometimes she passes up good shots and tries to drive into the mid range. If they are giving you wide open 3s just shoot the ball.

Apparently Vic talked about the incoming freshman at the luncheon. Booker is the first, Boutilier is probably the second (she’s 6’9 you either have it or don’t) and Maul is the third.  Codio may the fourth mentioned

Quote

Fans will love a 6'+ incoming freshman that plays like a point guard. She and her family are very excited and can not wait to join Texas next year.

Another 6'+ incoming freshman will develop slowly and will spend her first several months with the track team, learning how to run, and how to run fast. But she has something you either have or do not have.

A newcomer with the team (and her family) made a great decision to enroll early and receive the medical support and rehab services that would not be possible in HS.

Another newcomer will not see the court before October at the earliest due to rehab, so it will take quite a bit of time for her to return to play. Therefore, it is not currently possible for Vic to evaluate her game.

Also did not list Shaylee among the seniors to be honored at Senior Day (Morris, Masudi and Gutierrez) so very likely Shaylee is taking her 6th year next year

She was probably there to support her friend Ashley Chevalier. Really don't see KH being here next year, certainly can't trust her with a scholarship.

I also don’t think she will be here in 2023-24. That’s a scholarship we need for a Sonya Morris-type of transfer. A shooter and a ball handler.

If Shaylee is back next year, our starting 5 may be:

Harmon

Gonzalez

Booker

Moore

Jones/Gaston

A lot of bench/combo options for the 2nd unit with Muhammad, Jak, hopefully a transfer PG/SG, Holle, Faye. Boutilier might get mop up minutes unless and until she can learn to run up and down the floor quickly.  Maul will likely not be ready and Codio is a big unknown.

That looks to me like 13 players with 2 open scholarships if Hunter finally departs. Hopefully a couple fifth years want a year of grad school paid for and one is a PG who just wants to backup Rori for 8-12 minutes a game

Shaylee is a grad transfer correct? Does she still have a year of eligibility left?

She does due to her medical RS year and COVID.  She has 5 years to play 4 season, which she will have completed after this season, but since2020-21 didn't count, she gets 1 more year to complete her 4 "true" seasons of eligibility.

2018-19 - BYU
2019-2020 - medical RS year
2020-21 - BYU (COVID season doesn't count for eligibility)
2021-22 - BYU
2022-23 - Texas
2023-24 - extra year of eligibility due to COVID

Jaki just doesn’t have it. At least on the offensive end. Misses most of her shots and gets stuck with the ball in her hands too much.  Wish she could be developed without these kinds of minutes.

Just no offensive game

Surprisingly a single digit game at half. Hopefully we get some things cleaned up in the second half, particularly offensive efficiency

True but not all that surprising.

Missing Morris and Muhammad are probably 2 of our top 6 players. On top of no Moore. Team is running out of bodies. Hopefully, Muhammad just has a cold or something and that's why she hardly played.

Going to guess we don’t practice a lot of offense against a triangle and 2 defense. Halftime adjustments will be key
