2023 Texas Softball - Back to WCWS

There’s no excuse for a team of players that can hit well to have crap defense.  If you have good enough hand-eye to hit then you can field.  It’s about practice.  The 10,000 hour rule and all.  You don’t do something well without putting in the work.  Conversely, if you have the talent, and you put in the work, you get good.   We did get good at defense right at the end of the season last year and it’s why we made the final.  (We had a lapse in the final but by then the trend was set). How did we get good at the end?  Repetition throughout the season is my theory.  So what are these girls doing in the off-season?

Goode broke Jefferson’s freshman year record of consecutive games with a hit to start their Texas career. Goode has a hit in every game so far (9) - the record was 8. Jefferson was also in attendance to see that. Goode leads the team with a  .567 average

This has to be one of the youngest teams in the country.

The top 3 pitchers are what sophomore, freshman, sophomore? The lineup consists of a bunch of underclassmen. I bet this team is going to be really good by the end of the season.

1 senior who rarely plays (Gilbert), 7 juniors (6 of the 7 are contributors with the other being Corona), 7 sophomores and 6 freshman.  13 underclassmen and basically 6 juniors who all play reliably

Czech is a junior, so no senior pitching

Texas welcomes the following teams this weekend, as we continue a very long pre-conference homestand:

3-7 ACU
0-6 Texas Southern
6-4 Kansas (won't play them)
7-3 Virginia Tech (top 15 ranking)

Long homestand broken up by a single mid-week visit to UTA on March 8.  We will then hit the road for Sam Houston and 5 games in Tampa at a tournamnet hosted by USF after we finish that 16-in-17 games homestand.

UTA is quality club too, 2-2 in its 4 games against Tech (split), Kentucky (W) and UNT (L)

Disappointed in no West Coast trips since Mary Nutter and UCLA in '20 (iirc).    Are Mary Nutter, Judi Garman, Puerto Vallarta invitation only, rotational, or can teams invite themselves ?

Perhaps we will start a series with former asst coach Megan Bartlett and Ariz St.   They are 8-2 primarily against weaker competition.   She has a good staff in Jimmy Kolaitis and Jeremy Manley (former NZ pitcher like Mike White).

Bella!!

Bad news is she is slapping.  I don't remember her being a slapper.

I mean she had 43 hits last year and only 15 were XBH. 14-15 SB. She got the speed to slap or some power to swing away too
