San Antonio Spurs '23-'24: Hoops, Hype, Hair Dye

Spurs were 5-for-41 on 3’s tonight. How is that even possible?

I hate this 3 point chucking bullshit. I really wish the NBA would only allow a certain number of 3s per game. Let's call it 25-30 per team. At least then you'd actually have to be judicious in shot selection instead of it being "just chuck one early in the shot clock, more possessions means more scoring!" After you've used up your allotment of 3's, that's it. For the last 3 minutes of gametime and overtime go back to no limits and shoot all the 3s you want to make end of games exciting.

I'm still bearish on whatever the fuck is going on around him but I think something has clicked the past couple games for Wemby. He looks more comfortable and confident and is playing with more purpose.

One thing that consistently blows me away is his finishing around the rim - especially on putbacks and when he's off balance. He's 74.4% from 0-3 feet as a 19 year old rookie which is basically elite or just a hair under it. Picking some names out of a hat, Durant, LeBron and AD are all right around 74% for their careers. As rookies those guys were 60.7%, 60.4% and 71.4% respectively.

There are aspects of his game that are so beyond what typical 19 year olds are capable of, let alone what typical 19 year olds even think of or recognize. I've also noticed him being more vocal with his teammates and generally making his presence felt more consistently. Earlier in the season he often disappeared into the background for 5 or 6 possessions at a time. I'm seeing less of that - and I think it's because he's realizing what he's actually capable of on each end and how to maximize his production.

If he keeps this up and (knocks on wood) stays healthy he could legitimately be one of the best 20 or 30 players in the league by the end of the season. If he can get to 65 games played he should be a fucking shoe in for an all-defensive team.

I think I'm comfortable in saying he's the most special talent I've ever seen. Unfortunately he's making it difficult for me to not tune in every time these guys play, because collectively we are playing some of the worst professional basketball I've ever seen.

More highlights.

There is a remote, and I mean very remote, possibility that this whole nightmare is some kind of Popian exercise in testing Wemby's mettle and seeing how long it takes for him to seize control of the locker room. A kind of trial by fire, character building through adversity thing. The rest of the team I am fine blowing up, even though I had some appreciation for the skills of Socha, Keldon, and Vassell.

That stubborn fuck Pop finally put him at the 5. There's more to it than that, but that's what clicked. He's had 20 and 18 rebounds, respectively, in the past two games since the move. Collins isn't clogging up the paint and teams are matching up their bigs on him, so Wemby is closer to the basket for both blocks and rebounds, and he can take advantage of his quickness/size combo against bigger/slower dudes. Holy shit if they ever could find somebody that can get him the ball at the right time and place, and double holy shit if anybody ever had to honestly guard the Spurs at three point line.

One thing that makes the losing this year more frustrating is that the franchise was so hesitant to rip off the band-aid after the Kawhi trade. It was a slow bleed into mediocrity until last season when they fully bottomed out. The time invested in grooming White, Murray and Poeltl just manifested into more picks, not wins. It's been a loooooong time since the Spurs were competitive. Meanwhile the younger guys on the team are still on that learning curve (Keldon, Vassell, Sochan).

I still believe they are getting better despite the record. Even Victor thinks they are headed the right way in the long run.

In the meantime... more patience and coyote porn.

Good point - that's definitely been part of it. It's not just what he's doing on the stat sheet, though. I mean he still shot 6 3s last night. There's little things over the course of a game where I think he's changed his approach and is still experimenting.

Another thing I forgot to mention that I noticed last night - he seems to be rounding into game shape. I think his fitness and stamina have improved since he got here.

I wouldn't be fine with losing Sochan. He's going to be special.

I mean, I like all three of those guys despite not thinking Keldon is a good fit on this team.

It's the healthiest attitude and the best for the welfare of the women and pets in my life.

Just watching now for individual player development and for Wemby highlights.

No use getting frustrated at a team that isnt making the playoffs. I would think we will have a nice stretch of games at some point that we can look at and say, hey, there's some hope here for the future.

I just laugh at all the stupid stuff. The main thing lately has been "well, i guess we aren't gonna bother guarding 3 point shooters again". Guard somebody, sheesh.

Maybe 2 wins in the same month?

The only way this team starts winning games is if Wemby starts dragging them to wins against their will.

Which is possible, but rather unlikely.

Finding a way to lose that HOU game with the Rockets playing like complete ass was actually amazing. I mean if they can't win games like that I'm not sure how they're gonna string anything together.

Can we have a stretch where we win 4 of 8? 5 of 10? Would be remarkable after what we've seen so far.

We're getting 1.5 tonight against the Lakers.

How Vegas views any of our games as a toss up at this point I'm not sure.

Lakers on a segababa, and 5th game in 8 nights including a stay over in Vegas that included an in season championship celebration. Lebron played 40 minutes last night. AD played 36.5. This would seem like an opportune time to load manage.

I actually kinda like our chances tonight.

I liked our chances against that shitty Chicago team and any NBA team with a pulse should have been able to score 94 points and beat the Rockets last game.

But I'll be damned if anyone is going to hand the Spurs our 18th straight loss.

If we win tonight, I'm dropping a banner. Beating the in season champs? Dark horse playoff team all of the sudden??

All I know is if we manage to win I'm blowing my load.
