Texas Softball 2024 - Farewell to the Big 12 (and back to OKC?)

Js1

Texas wins 9-1 (5) after winning 8-0 (5) earlier today

Off to Lubbock next weekend for our last Big 12 regular season series ever and last time playing Tech in the regular season.

A Texas sweep and a single OU loss to OKST secures a Big 12 regular season title and likely the #1 overall seed

let's sweep in Lubbock and hope we can win this thing.

I’m going to be so mad if a single meltdown game against UH is the difference in not even getting a co-championship

Texas Tech Preview

Lubbock: Ugly
Tech: Annoying
Chances of winning: As good as your chances of getting an STI having sex with a current Tech student

Texas Tech
28-17 (8-13 Big 12)
RPI 37
SOS 34
Non-Conf record: 20-4 (cupcakes much?) with an SOS of 100

Only 9-7 at home
2-10 versus RPI Top 25 (6-14 against the top 50) with 7 (!!) victories over RPI 200+ teams, which is pretty pathetic (you too, aggy)

Notable games: FSU L 9-8, split with TXST W 4-1 and L 8-1, swept by OU 14-0, 15-2 (5), 11-1, lost 2/3 to UCF and Baylor, swept by OKST 11-3 (6), 13-0 (5), 4-6.  Also lost a non-conf game to UTEP and Charlotte.  Had all 3 of their ISU games in Ames cancelled due to weather

Hit .313 as a team with 80 doubles and 55 HR (.303 in Big 12 play with 34 doubles and 25 HR)
46-53 SB (13-16 in Big 12 play)
.970 fielding (.968 in Big 12 play)
5.26 team ERA (7.92 in Big 12 play) - Wright (4.20 in 98.1 IP) and Kuehl (5.10 in 81 IP) are the two who see the most action, with the OU transfer Rains (6.51 in 52.2 IP) third-most used.  Couple other pitchers under 30 IP, both ERAs north of 6

In Big 12 play, their primary pitcher has been Wright (5.58 ERA in 64 IP) and then a trio of lesser used pitchers in Kuehl (12.60 ERA in 21.2 IP), Blackledge (7.20 ERA in 23.1 IP) and Rains (12.69 ERA in 16 IP)

Of their 21 Big 12 games, Wright has started 10 of them and seen action in 14 with 6 complete games, Kuehl has 5 starts and 10 appearances and Blackledge and Rains each have 2 starts.

That pitching is horrendous.  Texas should absolutely sweep this with 3 run-rule or near run-rule victories

Damn ou smoked them like so much cuts of meat.  We need to do the same.

Yep.  This team knows what goals are ahead of them.

Sweep and OKST take 1/3 versus OU - Texas and OU share the Big 12 title, Texas is the #1 seed in the Big 12 tournament in OKC and avoids both OU/OKST until the finals

Bedlam series for reference:

Friday 7:30pm FS1
Saturday 1pm ESPN
Sunday 4pm ESPN2

As Cat mentioned on Saturday, Texas hasn't won the Big 12 regular season since 2010 (Texas finished 1 game ahead of OU) and the Big 12 tournament since 2005

If Texas didn’t lose that laugher to Houston, they would control their own destiny

To be fair, if OU didn’t also implode against BYU in that one game, they’d be sitting in a much better position than they are today.

I’d rather be the team needing to sweep a shitty Tech team than needing to sweep a legit OKST team that has comparable pitching to Texas that shut you down already in 2 of 3 games

Maxwell and May gave up 6 ER yesterday to UCF and looked mortal.  Hopefully we were taking notes on our day off.

And that offense hasn't looked all world:

3 runs against Duke
4 runs against Washington
3 runs against McNeese
4 runs against Iowa State
1 run against Texas
1 run against Texas
4 runs against BYU
2 runs against UCF

Kilfoyl needs to pitch against OU like she did against us

Do yall think Reese has a chance to win Big 12 POY? Or do you think they give it to Jennings due to her overall career? Reese has a better batting average,  more hits and RBIs. Jennings has 1 more homerun and has scored 11 more runs. I'd love to see Reese win this award!

Reese’s issue is her Big 12 only stats don’t compare to Jennings. She slumped a bit to start Big 12 play

Jennings is 5th in hits, Reese is 12th

2x as many HRs just in Big 12 play (12 vs 6)

31 RBIs for Jennings, 27 for Reese

I think it’s Jennings’ award for sure

60% chance of rain in Lubbock Saturday and Sunday.  Texas cannot afford to lose games to weather this weekend and risk that ruining our chances of a title/co-title.

6pm Friday
1pm Sat
Noon Sunday

Gotta find a way to fit all 3 in

what's the rule on that?

I figured conference games had to be played/made up, for precisely the reason we are worried about.

I do not know.  They have not yet rescheduled any of Tech's games with ISU.

Big 12 tournament kicks off on a week from tomorrow...

Assuming the rules are like baseball, there is no makeup. Championship is determined by winning %age.

https://www.collegesportsmadness.com/softball/bracketology   (very large to c&p)

Only for purpose of discussion until Friday to keep our anxious minds occupied.  😊

Very early Regional projection from College Sports Madness (only one I could find) to be taken with a grain of salt.    #2 seed hosting Texas St, NCar, and Prairie View matched with #15 seed ULL.   OU is #1 seed matched with #16 seed UW which could be a strong matchup.   I think UW may finish higher.   aggy #8 seed.

Last Four In: Florida Atlantic, UCF, South Alabama, North Carolina

First Four Out: Ole Miss, Kansas, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech

Big 12: *Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State, UCF, Baylor

College Sports Madness is literally the worst.  I think most brackets should be done based on right now and right now, Texas is the #1 overall seed.

  • Holds the H2H series win over OU
  • Much stronger SOS (9, compared to 30)
  • More top 10 wins (7, compared to 2)

D1 Softball has Texas at the #1 overall seed (not even the Big 12 AQ), hosting PVA&M, MSST (yes, please, they are slumping so hard to end the season) and SDSU, paired with (16) Louisiana (where Baylor is sent)

OU is #2 overall seed, hosting Oregon, and paired with #15 Alabama

UCF is a 2 in (13) Florida's regional

A&M is the #12 overall seed, hosting both TXST and Texas Tech (2 and 3 seeds), paired with #5 LSU (the committee loves at least one SEC-SEC super regional)

OKST is the #10 overall seed, paired with #7 Georgia

Kansas is a 3 seed going to #9 overall seed Arkansas

7 bids for the Big 12 (6 for the new Big 12 - Arizona)
13 bids for the SEC (15 if you count the new SEC)

Someone did a nice breakdown of Texas vs. OU when it comes to #1 overall seed

Texas is 8-5 against the RPI Top 10 (.615) compared to 2-2 for OU (.500) - even after Bedlam, OU will only have 7 games against the top 10, while Texas has 13
Texas is 15-5 against the RPI Top 25 (.750), compared to 8-3 for OU (.727)
Texas' best series win is #2 OU. OU's best series win is #22 Baylor
Texas SOS is top 10.  OU's SOS is at the bottom of the top 25.

Both teams swept Baylor.  Texas is 2-0 versus Sun Belt leader Louisiana while OU went 1-1 versus the Cajuns
Texas also has 2 wins versus Texas State (home/away) and 2 wins at Pac 12 leader UCLA.  Also a win at ACC leader FSU and a neutral site win over SEC leader Tennessee.

Texas' worst loss is at UH.  OU's worst loss is BYU at home.  Those just cancel out - both Big 12 and both in the 50-100 range.

Might affect our rpi but mostly posting because whoa

florida 15

fsu 13

9 innings

Unlikely to mess with our RPI much.  FSU did split their season series with UF, 1-1

What was wild was the 6th run bottom 7 by FSU to send it to extras.  It was 13-7 headed to the home half of the 7th lol

I'm excited to watch our game tomorrow, but god damn, Kilfoyl vs. Maxwell is going to be must-see TV.

#1 ERA vs. #3 ERA (Kilfoyl 1.35 versus Maxwell 1.59)
#2 pitching staff vs #3 pitching staff (OU 2.18 ERA versus OKST 2.34 ERA)
#1 fielding vs. #2 fielding (OKST .982 versus OU .979)
#1 BA vs. #6 BA (OU .357 vs. OKST .270)

OU has the edge (better offense, playing at home) but OKST and Coach Kenny G know Maxwell very well, obviously.

These games will probably look at a lot like Texas-OU and Texas-OKST - 5-0, 3-0, 2-1, 2-1, 5-2 type games.  I would be shocked if any of them are run-rules.

(Also looking at Big 12 stats, if TK has a good weekend against Tech, she's probably Big 12 Freshman of the Year)

Need some help from the softball gods.    OKSt first visit to Love Field,  capacity 4200 which will likely be filled.   Hope Kenny G can keep them focused.

Seems the weather forecast is a little more encouraging than it was. Hoping that even if tomorrow is a washout they can double up on Sunday. But first things first. Win tonight and keep rolling

Saturday afternoon in Lubbock and Sunday in Norman do not look good if this forecast holds.     And a concern with lightning delays.

Actually today doesn't look great for Norman, but they could potentially fit in 2 tomorrow if they had to.

Saturday could turn into a Sunday DH for us.   Should consider bumping up today to 2-3pm, but we may just have a delayed start
