Definitely try the polar plunge, at least once. Just have towels and warm clothes ready as soon as you get out.

But stay in that "warm" feeling water for any length of time, you quickly realize, yeah, its still pretty fricking cold.

It would definitely be a jump in, swim around... ha ha look at me... F this let's go eat!

I've done it on an early February morning. Ages ago a buddy and I were doing an early morning run on the trail and he suggested/dared jumping in the pool so we  took the spur over from the creek bridge.

We stayed in for ~10 minutes (it felt super nice) knowing it was going to be cold as fuck when we got out. It was fun to do, but once was enough for me.

Man it was a lovely weekend all the way around.  Saw Ian Moore at Antone's on Friday, crawfish boil at my house on Saturday, and just hanging by the pool in the backyard all afternoon on Sunday.  Tremendous weather and even though it's supposed to get Africa-hot this week, I can't complain at all about how mild and pleasant this spring has been so far.

No doubt.  Had mother's day lunch out on the back patio yesterday... perfect weather to relax and enjoy the outdoors.  This morning was 53.  Glorious.  That all ends but still, it was a great start to the month.

Seen him a couple of times over the past year as he was starting to put on more shows... one at SXSW at last year at the Austin Music Awards.  His playing is so spot on.  Haven't been to these either but might opt for this on Thursday instead of the Drop-In.

I'd definitely pick Ian Moore (rock mode) over Next of Kin, who really need to work on being even more precious.  Blech.

Yeah he's finally released his first album on vinyl and we bought a copy of it and had him autograph it that night at Antone's, dedicated to our 17yo daughter who has become a huge Ian Moore fan in recent years.  She couldn't go to that show because she's underage but I think we'll plan on taking her to this one, plus it's free!

Just remembered we were at the same show at the Austin Music Awards in March 2024...

Ian Moore, Eve Monsees... Speedy Sparks on bass, Chris Layton (can't see him) was on drums.  Ben Buck was ready to go on next.

His show a month ago at Antone's was definitely rock/blues Ian Moore.  He played some newer stuff I didn't know, but I wouldn't classify any of it as precious.

Heh.  I definitely wasn't aiming "precious" at Ian.

Yeah, I just didn't know if that was a return to form or a one-off.

His SXSW show last year (the one I saw) was definitely straight up blues/rock.  This also insinuates he's back to his roots for now...

I wonder how much fame he cost himself?  I'm not trying to belabor the point, but I think he's a better player and equal singer to Gary Clark, Jr., and probably a better songwriter.  (I might revisit that last claim.)  Gary's an international star who is set for life.  Ian . . . well, not.

I do remember some of his blistering sets at clubs like Steamboat and Liberty Lunch.  Those were crazy days for Austin guitar -- Eric Johnson blowing out eardrums, etc.

And Lee Person playing the 311, too.  What a great time to be around.

Hey, not sure if y'all saw this about Samuel Grey Horse:

https://www.statesman.com/story/news/fire/2025/01/10/horseback-santa-samuel-grey-horse-house-fire/77594420007/

Who?  You know him - you've seen him so many times...

He's a fixture on South Congress and loved by the music community.  His GoFundMe has already raised something like $32K (the goal was $25K).  Love to see the community rally around him.

The 6th Street Cowboy guy is great. My daughter became friends with him a few years ago. She was married off S 1st last year and Sam came by with two horse.  My daughter and new son-in-law rode off into the sunset (well, S Congress and S 1st area). It was hilarious. (My daughter and SIL are both in the horse industry in Kentucky so made complete sense.)

Ian botoxed his vocal cords and he could only sing in falsetto or he would sound like he was going through puberty, unable to control his voice. I guess something went wrong with the Botox or else, he knew it would affect him and still did the treatment for whatever reason. Jesus crossed the rio grande sounded weird in a high pitched voice.

Yeah I was there last night too, I felt really bad for him.

I also felt really bad for my 17yo daughter who's a huge Ian Moore fan because we've played his music to her for years, and this was her first experience to hear him live.

But most of all I felt bad for the rest of us who had to sit there and watch those two women stand up and "dance" in front of the rest of the audience.

Anyway, I enjoyed AJ Vallejo's set with his latest band Brodie Lane.  The medley with Timbuk3 and the Doors was cool, and when they closed with Styx, I was totally in.

Overall my first experience with this series at this venue and I liked it.  I'm trying to convince my daughter to go to UT and we'd spent the morning doing the Texas Preview tour and information sessions, and then had lunch at The Posse, and ended the day with the live concert on the grounds at the Bullock.  She had a great time and I made some progress pushing Texas as a great college choice... :)

Love how you gave your daughter the middle aged dude reliving his time in Austin experience. Too bad you couldn’t hit up Mad Dog & Beans and Texas Showdown.

Well to be fair, she's been born and raised in Austin and been to dozens of UT games and tailgate parties and is quite accustomed to experiencing the middle aged dude reliving his Austin experience kind of lifestyle... but this time, she was actually picturing herself living that college experience and I think it hit different.

She might or might not end up going to UT but she definitely loves Austin as much as I ever did.

I guess I need to understand what happened in a year because when I heard him he sounded fine.   Here's a video below from a year ago (not mine).  A good friend of mine is very close to Ian and he said he has been struggling for a while with his speaking voice (pretty much can't speak).

Found a post from a while re: the Botox...

"Wanted to send an update on “the voice”. As many of you know, I have been working with a condition called ‘laryngeal dystonia’. It’s a neurological condition that creates unwanted tension in the vocal cords.
When I first started dealing with this, my speaking voice was fine, but I was really struggling to sing. Somewhere along the line, starting about a year ago, it started to flip.
Singing and speaking come from 2 different hemispheres of the brain. These last couple of months of shows have been the best my singing voice had worked since everything started. The flip side is that it is very difficult for me to speak, and the physical and mental effort it takes is exhausting.

To me, it feels like something way bigger than me. It feels like my singing voice is finding freedom because it needs to. I can feel this calling deep in my spirit. It is amazing how relaxed I am when singing and I am now trying to find a path in speaking through these avenues.

I have had poor results with the traditional medical world. The Botox shots in the vocal cords didn’t help much, and there is a month or so after each shot where you can’t make noise at all. Those times were the worst my voice had been(the cure more harm than the disease). I am finding my path through yoga, meditation, body awareness, self work, and advocating for myself.

For those of you that have invited me to interviews and podcasts, or those that have wondered why I’m talking less after shows, this is why. It is pretty traumatic currently trying to speak, and I am working through this time to find a way physically and mentally to approach it. For now, know that I am grateful for all of you. I am so grateful to my body and my voice for reconnecting me to this higher place. To be able to sing is something I have always had deep gratitude for, but to have not had that freedom and to now see it again is deeply humbling and I wanted to share what feels like a true miracle to me.

The fact that I started a non profit in SMASH with no health concerns at the time, and then fell into the most challenging personal health issue is no accident."

That sucks... hope he gets that sorted out because from what I've heard, he's a good dude.

On a side note, if you're going to get your daughter into the local scene, Far Out Lounge often has all ages shows.  Empire has lots of good bands that are typically 18+ and I think Mohawk is the same.  I usually don't pay attention to the ages for obvious reasons.  I know Sahara Lounge is the same.

Hey... on a side note... anyone been to Barton Spring Pool this past week and seen if the diving board is back?

And Empire has a reputation for patrons getting drugged on a regular basis in their establishment.

I haven't been but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.  I heard Side Bar is one of the worst offenders.  But the same thread has people talking about Far Out, passing out in places in Denver, etc.  No place is immune and teach her not to let her guard down.  She's going to go out to all kinds of places and most of the frat-bro places will be just as bad a music venue like Empire.

I saw Ian live in May at Antone's and his voice was great.  Then when we saw him at the free show outside the Bullock on 6/27, he was only singing in falsetto and mentioned the botox thing.

Absolutely sucks for him and I hope he can heal up soon, he's still one of my favorite live musicians of all time.

Was going to go to that show at the Bullock.  I'll ask my buddy... he might know more.

Probably should go on the WTF is wrong with you thread instead of this one (and sadly it'll get more traffic there because most surly assholes just want to complain about shit).

But on the positive side I will say that I went to Soupleaf Hot Pot and it was delicious!
