two years in a row where we’ve had three teams get promoted and then immediately relegated has got me thinking: what if promotion guaranteed you two years in the premier league, and the three worst teams besides the three newly promoted teams went down?

i know, it’s probably a terrible idea for a bunch of reasons. just a thought though, because watching teams go up and then right back down is so uninspiring.

I like it. Maybe two years instead of three?

Not bad. I like the idea of a relegation playoff better though. 20th gets sent down. 19th plays 16th, 17th plays 18th.

It gives the teams even less reason to try. Promotion money AND 2 years of EPL money.

Relegation should be enough incentive for teams to invest. We’ve seen teams make the jump work and succeed. They just need to really try.

teams that get promoted are already trying very very hard. they want to stay up.

you can really try and have it still not be enough in just one year's time.

That’s why I like the idea of a playoff. You might not be able to do it for the season but one game anything can happen

tottenham fans have been “dunking on” arsenal fans non stop since their mighty european title…

IMG_3145.thumb.jpeg.3ec10b683141ee2d4844637adedc128c.jpeg

…only to be brought back to reality today. we’ve already established that nobody here is going to change anyone else’s mind, but i’ll simply reiterate that it’s wild to me think that tottenham has had a better season or is in a better position going forward than arsenal. hope these guys enjoyed the last few days of “dunking on” us, because that’s as good as it’s ever going to get.

They aren’t in a better position moving forward but they qualified for the champions league and hoisted a European cup. 17th or not that’s a better season than not winning any trophies.

Days since winning a European trophy

Spurs: 4 day

West Ham: 718 days

Chelsea: 1,456 days

Woolwich: 11,341 days

but congrats on that run of not losing to the big six. You got that going for you.

i’d rather have our season than theirs, zero question about it. winning a european championship *is* a big deal, and they deserve to celebrate that. getting into the CL is a much bigger deal, and they definitely deserve to celebrate that. but there’s no way in hell i’d rather win a trophy vs a bunch of teams nobody has ever heard of and finish 17th than to have a season where my team finished second and went to the CL semifinals. team A won a competition that nobody cares about vs teams nobody can pronounce, while team B had the kind of season that’s a building block towards winning the only two trophies that really really matter, two trophies that neither team has won in the 15 years i’ve been supporting Arsenal.

tottenham vs arsenal in 24-25 is basically like this:

2025 arsenal = 2024 Texas Football. only lost to the two best teams, made the playoff semifinals.

2025 tottenham = an SEC team who accidentally got a southland conference schedule and then went undefeated and was given a trophy for it

you can love that trophy all you want, and to be fair you should; just don’t equate it with anything meaningful. the ticket to the CL is the actual prize. your “european title” might as well be the carabao cup as far as anyone else is concerned.

You think no one cares about the Europa league lol? Ok man. This is just a very aggy take. Plain as.

Also in the span of one post you call winning it a big deal and say it doesn’t matter. So which is it?

And I’ll say this - Spurs fans totally get this season was a disaster. The heart of this season the team had a starting line up of injuries.

WE DID NOT CRY ABOUT THAT.

And yeah we finished 1 place out of relegation. SO FUCKING WHAT?

Trophies change a lot of things. Especially when they are European. Try to downplay THAT all you want, it’s greater hardware than you have ever seen your team hoist in 2+ decades.

i’m not one to say you shouldn’t celebrate winning trophies- you should. it doesn’t happen often- especially at tottenham- and in that sense it’s a big deal, particularly for tottenham and their fans.

but come on man. is anyone *really* impressed that tottenham beat Qarabağ, Ferencváros, AZ Alkmaar, Hoffenheim, Elfsborg, Eintracht Frankfurt, Bodø/Glimt, and the worst Manchester United team of my lifetime? does anyone think that was some great, impressive feat? of course not. hell the final wasn’t even good.

so, on the one hand, i don’t want to take away tottenham’s joy at winning a european trophy, but on the other hand im not going to lie and say that anyone outside of that club is particularly impressed, nor do they care. nobody this august will look at their schedule and say, “ooh, we play the mighty champions of europe, tottenham hotspur!” nobody respects that title outside of the team that wins it.

and yeah, again, you’ll never convince me that tottenham had a better season than arsenal because they won a competition vs alphabet soup teams, when this is what they did in the epl:

celebrate the trophy, have your parade, but don’t lie to yourself and say that that one “achievement” makes it a good season for the club.

Wasn't Derka the guy that was all about how FA Cups were the shit when they were winning them (a trophy you need 6 wins for as an EPL team - despite that 4 in 7 years is damn impressive as would be 1 in 7). Now shitting on the Europa League Trophy (15 games for top flight leagues, Spurs won 10 of them) - the same league/schedule that KO'd the likes of Lazio, Roma, Athletic Bilbao, Frankfurt, Lyon and a lot of other teams from European Leagues.

Hardware is hardware - it's damn impressive, if you don't get that then you just see what you want to see.

No reason to not be excited about winning the Europa league and getting a UCL spot is a huge prize.   But the Europa league, with no UCL drop ins is ass now.  Spurs and ManU in the finals shows that.

eight of our top ~11-12 outfield players missed 3+ months, including two of our three best players, and all of our strikers. we had zero players score in double digits for the first time since the early 1920’s, and still finished second in the league and 3rd/4th in europe. but uh, that’s all obviously totally unimpressive. finishing one spot out of relegation and beating Lyhfgzbryab’Ojdbehj FC five times is the stuff that legends are made of.

either way, denying that Arsenal had worse injury luck than anyone else in the league just makes you instantly lose credibility. denying reality over pettiness is so lame.

also, let’s point out the fact that when arsenal was getting screwed out of points week after week after week in brand new inventive ways that have never been seen before or since, you guys either denied it was happening or you laughed and told us not to complain. now aston villa gets one dodgy call and you guys are in here apologizing for it. lol, that’s so lame.

y’all just hate arsenal in the same way that maga regards worship trump- completely delusional and based totally on emotions. everything you think and feel is based on whether or not it happened to arsenal. cue the martyrdom comments, but it’s observably, objectively true.

nope. winning a trophy is better than not winning one. nobody said differently.

that said, winning a trophy doesn’t automatically mean you had a better season than every club who didn’t win a trophy. tottenham lost 22 epl games and won the carabao cup of europe. there’s not a single person here who would rather have their club’s 2025-26 season mirror tottenham‘s 24-25 season vs arsenal’s, but you’ll all lie to yourselves (and the rest of us) right now and pretend that you would. that’s so dumb.

so you’d rather have your club lose 22 epl matches next year than finish second? you’d rather have your club playing in the kiddie league than the champions league? that’s what you’re telling me? that gif is your reaction to someone who doesn’t want to watch their team be terrible in the epl and playing in an afterthought european tournament?

lol, okey dokey!

y’all laughed and talked shit when this kept happening and yet you’re in here now apologizing to villa.

so, we lost double digit points due to officiating, we suffered a higher number + more severe injuries than anyone else, we played the final three months with no strikers, we finished better than all of your clubs save one on the epl, and did better than all of your clubs in the champions league, and yet you all to a man sit there and say, “there’s literally nothing impressive about that. but man, tottenham sure had a great season.”

exasperatedronswanson.gif indeed.

Maybe you should cry more.

You act like Arsenal is all alone in dealing with bad calls and injuries. Poor Arsenal, singled out by the refs and doctors to ruin their season. Sorry, but no - your team isn't special. Every team faces injuries. Every team gets bad calls, both for and against them. We generally see them as evening out, but you only see the negatives and never when Arsenal is the beneficiary. Hell, you don't even get how other teams have to overcome injuries.

Anyway, congrats on the Wenger cup for a top 4 finish.

this is maga levels of delusion. the facts even posted: nobody suffered more injuries than arsenal; nobody suffered more impactful injuries than arsenal; nobody lost more points to bad officiating than arsenal; nobody got more pgmol apologies than arsenal; and most importantly, absolutely nobody came in here whining about any of that, or asking for sympathy from anyone.

all of that stuff was merely brought up when this thread unanimously stated that mikel arteta has done nothing impressive at arsenal, either this year or during his tenure. it was then simply pointed out that finishing second in the league and going to the semifinals of the epl despite the insane amount of injuries and points lost due to poor officiatiing is, in fact, impressive. that’s it. it was a response to your asinine, overtly biased opinions. our club is in *insanely* better shape than it was when arteta showed up, and y’all literally can’t even admit that. “nothing impressive” about taking our club from where Man U is right now to where Arsenal is right now, with a fraction of the money. sure.

all you magats have done since then is slurp tottenham for having a horrible season that ended with a Little Dribblers trophy while continuing to swear up and down that the team who objectively did much, much better than tottenham did “nothing impressive”. it’s just pathetic to see. besides the simple, undeniable fact that arteta has done a great job overall, even when you keep being presented with actual facts about injury record or lost points to bad calls you just sit there and deny it, all while apologizing to villa over one bad call. it’s truly maga levels of self delusion. you all should be embarrassed.

i think it’s really funny that in your mind, pointing out actual facts about arsenal being hard done by poor officiating = a conspiracy theory, particularly when i have out and out posted that there’s no conspiracy against arsenal, just that we’ve gotten the worst of the terrible officiating which permeates this league. even more when liverpool coincidentally got favorable officiating all season.

miya also funny to me that when liverpool where unlucky runners up against man city that arsenal fans sympathized with them and wished liverpool had won. and then when arsenal finished second two years in a row, twice to the same city super club, and once with all of the aforementioned bad luck, you guys decided to talk a bunch of shit about arsenal and invent some new rivalry, as if city, chelsea, and united are your sister clubs. so weird.
