When is the portal opening?

I guess Sark doesn't have to worry about juggling portal with playoff prep this year. Put everything in to the portal and final HS class

It’s a lot different this cycle. The portal is open January 2nd-16th and there isn’t a spring window. I’m sure we will still see updates from players “planning to enter the portal.”

You bring them in to compete. Gavin Holmes did it just fine. It happens all the time.

And then any contending team who needs a tackle will go after Baker.

Maybe, but Butler has been getting paid like a starter even as a back-up.  I’m not sure he’s a candidate for a big raise unless someone thinks he’s an all American candidate in year 2 as a starter.

Ohio St was desperate for a tackle going in to this season.  Someone always is. You bring in a tackle to compete with him and you are just about guaranteeing that you will lose him.  He's good enough and it's not worth the potential issues it would cause.  There are other positions that are a much higher priority.  Last year if they wanted to try something like that at Guard, it would have made sense.  It doesn't make sense at tackle this year.

I think it’s a bit different on defense where there is a ton of rotation (Brad Spence and Trey Moore are also good examples). Offensive line is pretty fixed outside of an injury.

I read this twice and I have no idea what you’re saying or who you’re talking about.

NFL Draft decisions are going to be interesting to follow. Looking briefly at some of the draft "experts":
Goosby is rating mostly day 2 but possibly late round 1.
Jelani's stock seems to have fallen quite a bit. Not even in ESPN's top safeties list.
MM's stock isn't super high anymore. Round 3-4ish.
Endries and Kanu could be round 3-4 type guys.
Hill looking like Round 2.

So, looking at that, Goosby would seem like the iffiest one (and at the most important position, unfortunately). I'd still expect Hill and MM to leave. Jelani should probably stay. Endries and Kanu, who knows.

Baker and Goosby, if he returns, are a good OT duo especially with another year of experience. If Goosby goes pro, furk.

Definitely need interior OL.

Ach, autocorrect.  I meant to write Baker.

He started every game this year.

Yes, my point was he was getting starter money already last year before his playing time justified it.  There’s obviously risk with anyone who doesn’t have a spot to play early or isn’t developmentally ready, but plays a premium position or is at a USC feeder school, for example, in that the upfront commitment is to get paid like a starter.

I’m sure they’d love to have him back, but I bet he’s already getting close to the maximum they think it would cost to replace him.

The word is that the program is ready to be very aggressive in the portal across the roster in order to maximize Manning's last season. There's been handwringing about retention and allocation for a while, but those same handwringers are now extremely bullish about being aggressive.

IOL, TB, TE, WR are all priorities. There's less concern on the defensive side of the DC, although that doesn't mean they're not going to be pursuing difference makers at every spot and trying to find depth in a few places as well.

I'm from Missouri on this cycle, personally. I think they're just going to cut bait on some of the higher rated, big contract guys who haven't done anything yet, whether that's premature or not being irrelevant. 2026 is supposed to be the year where it all comes together.

All else equal, you don't want to replace good young starters if at all possible. Continuity matters (for both sides). There's a lot more risk and learning curve for all involved if you swap someone out. And he should get better given lack of experience.

I also am not sure what bringing in a tackle accomplishes. Baker and Goosby got a lot better as the year went on. They are going to be solid next year. C/G is where we have to allocate NIL money to. It’s also very likely Flood gets fired here very soon, too. We cannot just go into 2026 without a running game.

Caleb Hawkins of North Texas needs to be our first call at RB. The guy is 6’2/200 and a fucking monster. I have no idea how the recruiting services missed that guy.

Will be some real interesting RB developments with Kiffin going to LSU.

I think between Jonah (assuming he goes through spring practice), Hicks, JJR, Filsame, and D. Williams… there is plenty of talent.  If McDonald comes back, even better.  Definitely think 1 experienced safety in the portal would be good but I don’t think it’s a must.  Personally, if I’m Jelani, I would go pro.  He’s got great measurables, had a very good year on film and safety is not a position of value in the nfl so staying doesn’t exactly improve his draft stock much.  I think he can easily go rounds 2-4 with how well he will test at the combine.

This is very true. Unless you're an almost sure star level, like Kyle Hamilton, Derwin James, or Xavier Mckinnney, your best hope is rd 2-4.
