So, I bought some B&B the other day and noticed that they don't sell Oak lump anymore.  They sell hardwood w/ some oak. Hardwood can be a lot of things.  When did this bullshit start? Is this similar to buying pellets for Traeger and seeing smoke flavor?

I love their briquets for simple grilling.  Cheaper and burns way better than all the rest.  Been harder and harder to find though.  I usually only find it in Academy of all places.

I've been getting the Kamado Joe lump at Lowe's for a few years now.  I used to get Cowboy but every bag started having metal and rocks in it.

I regularly get the Kamado Joe Big Block lump charcoal.  Its great for smoking, but I usually like smaller pieces for direct heat.  I opened a bag of B&B yesterday to put in the chimney for a direct heat fajita cook and so much of it was tiny pieces - reminding me while I like the Big Block.

Kamado Joe Big Block is one coal I will not use. They've repeatedly had quality issues over the years where a batch will be undercured, and then will leave heavy chemical taste in your meat. Meat costs too much to risk that.

If you want the Gucci stuff buy some Binchotan charcoal from the internet. It's made of Japanese oak and burns cleaner, longer, and hotter. They use it in places like Izakayas.

Remember, it's only Binchotan if it comes from the Wakayame region of Japan. Otherwise it's just sparkling Kingsford.
