Paul McGinley talked a ton (nearly non stop) about analytics, mental prep, team building, etc during the broadcast. Given he's closely involved with the Euro Ryder Cup team, he clearly knows what he's talking about and not just making shit up to fill up time. On the flip side, you didn't hear anything like that coming from Azinger or Bones or Smylie - either they're not involved at all (which for Smylie, fine, but Azinger?) or the US doesn't do any of the stuff McGinley was talking about.

I'm guessing the US doesn't do any of the stuff McGinley talked about. And if he talked about that much, he's probably hiding 3x the stuff.

Totally different mindsets. Totally different approaches. One clearly works.

Whistling Straits looked like American golf was at the peak of its powers and was about to go on a run in future Ryder Cups.  Instead the opposite becomes true and they don’t look like the more talented squad. Typically the US underperforms, this time they weren’t the best team.

where was all that when the US team torched them in 2021?

Bradley said that analytics actually told them to cut down the rough. so they are using analytics and it was a dumb move.  there is so much BS with this.  where were the analytics on Sunday when they got roasted?

they putted like shit on Friday, their scoring irons were not good either.  Most of Saturday they putted bad also.  Burns is one of the best putters on tour and he sucked.

It really isn't that complicated. the US team chokes because they generally get out short gamed in this event.  On top of that we had rookies who just face planted on Friday/Sat and Morikawa who really shouldn't have been on the team but he was #8 and a vet.  I've been very critical of the English/Morikawa pairing in foursomes and that could have been the difference but that is the only egregious mistake I see.

Donald just chose the same team he had in Italy.  He isn't some genius.  their guys made putts(Rose in particular was out of his mind) and were overall better with shorter irons Friday and Saturday.  They hit balls inside us all weekend, made putts on top of us, etc.

Europe has some great golfers with experience.  we have guys who choke, generally.

other than foursomes you are playing your own ball.

Golf is the most psychological sport in the world. Dismissing the attention to detail and trust created by Europe's RC leadership is dumb. Their goal is to eliminate distractions for the players.

Meanwhile, Team USA  had to answer media questions about the 500k payout all last week. Trump attending created a circus on Friday. Lingering questions if Keegan should have played or not.

Yes, sometimes preparation doesn't matter and it's just about making putts/golf shots. But the last 30 years has been dominated by Europe. That's not luck.

lock the thread - reopen it in 20 months if anyone gives a shit about it then. After the US rails the rest of the world in the Presidents Cup and thinks they have the edge back again.

Taking Colin was a mistake, then a compound mistake by trotting him out there in foursomes with an obviously bad pairing.  Then you played him again in singles when you had the option to sit him after Hovland withdrew.

Harris English was really good this year. Yeah he looked bad in foursomes (thanks Colin!) but he never got to play his own ball in the event.

JJ Spaun won at Oakmont, almost won the Players, and won a playoff event like a month ago. How is he not involved in all five sessions?

Cam Young’s been pretty much lights out for three months and is a local guy. How do you not have him out there Friday morning?

Why set up the event to be easy on the short game when Europe always has a better short game?

Europe decided to ride their horses into the ground on Friday and Saturday. All those guys were gassed on Sunday, but they built up a big enough lead that it didn’t matter.  Meanwhile Bryson had four different partners.

The organizational details matter. Probably not a massive amount, but certainly enough to provide an edge when the talent is equal. Look at the 2021 Europe squad. Insane talent disadvantage so Stricker probably didn’t have to do much beyond get the US team safely to the golf course each day.

Meh.  Aggy does this stuff all the time.  Cherry picks dates to try to show how much better they are.

Yep.  The greedy, money hungry LIV players like Cantlay don't give a shit about playing for tradition and history are the problem.  The Euros, all PGA Tour guys, played for free, for pride.

Our guys weren't gassed on Sunday?  Europe won but Donalds butt cheeks were puckered big time until Henley missed the putt.

The rain did make it easier on the short game(not Keegans fault) and cutting the rough was stupid(analytics).

Morikawa halved his match but I agree the English/Morikawa fuck up is all on Bradley.  even though Spaun wasn't great I would have played him and Young but there is probably something to do with type of ball in 4somes.

Which LIV team does Cantlay play on?

It’s staggering the best golfer in the world the last two years can post the record Scottie has at the last two Ryder Cups.  I guess it will become a thing now.

This team was pretty much completely missing veteran player leadership like Rose provided the last two cups.  That should be a role for Dustin Johnson who destroyed at WS but took the pay day and fucked off.  DeChambeau desperately wants to lead but repeatedly manages to step on his own dick.

Good luck getting modern American athletes to buy into any sort of rigid Ryder Cup program.  If there is any conflict with whatever they are doing individually to chase real money what do you think wins out?  I’m a bit suspicious the McGinley is largley full of crap that the Euros have a process “recipe” for RC

I just assumed from his attitude in this 2023 Ryder Cup that he must play for LIV. Those guys are all money hungry and dont care about the good of the game.

https://golf.com/news/patrick-cantlay-hatgate-ryder-cup-lacava-mcilroy/?srsltid=AfmBOooIBqEfwQrBrjWieeYkQSkBbN0qvyAK_bFYcLLbXpxN3YKrNbqn

“Understand from several sources that the US team room is fractured, a split led predominantly by Patrick Cantlay,” wrote Sky Sports’ Jamie Weir on Twitter. “Cantlay believes players should be paid to participate in the Ryder Cup, and is demonstrating his frustration at not being paid by refusing to wear a team cap.”

Weir added that Cantlay, the World No. 5, had “refused to attend the gala dinner earlier in the week” and, alongside good friend Xander Schauffele, “is sitting in a separate area of the team dressing room.” Weir also cited Cantlay and Schauffele as the duo who had pushed to keep Netflix cameras from the U.S. team room, too.

thanks

event total

europe had 7 of top 10 in strokes gained putting.  europe had 4 of the top 5, US had 4 of the bottom 5.

US had 6 of the top 10 in stroked gained approach(better than I expected but...)

Sunday singles

US had 6 of top 10 in strokes gained putting

US had 7 of top 10 in Strokes gained approach

they murdered us putting Friday foursomes and Saturday fourballs.  the other 2 Friday/Sat sessions were about even putting.

I think this was the biggest fuck up, setting up the course specifically the rough. The video is time stamped on this point. Bottom line, Keegan was a fucking idiot. From the pairings he trotted out to not using analytics simply to determine who hits first, his biggest mistake was basically taking away a huge advantage for the US, the iron play. Bethpage played like a muni. Also if you watch from the start, they should never hold any PGA event ever at Bethpage. Bethpage dipshits make the idiots at Waste Management blush.

this is interesting from the twitter above. the first day euros won 26 holes with 16 of those being Euros in the rough and US in the fairway.

I think this is largely our issue.

- Keegan has played in 2 Ryder Cups and has never been a vice captain/captain.

- Luke Donald has played in 4 Ryder Cups, and has been a Vice Captain twice and a Captain twice.

- For the US Team 12 players, they have a combined 26 Ryder Cup appearances (including 2025).

- For the Europe Team 12 players they have a combined 42 Ryder Cup appearances (including 2025).

There is a lot more experience and stability on the Europe side.

yes to bolded and rain helped even more.  #2 is the English Morikawa pairing twice.

Exactly. The rough was not in the least bit punishing and made the Ryder Cup a putting contest.

Fucking Keegan.

edit: We should've just held the Ryder Cup at the local putt putt.

that and our top 2 going 2-7-1 vs their top 2 Rory/Rahm going 6-3-1 made it such that down the order for Europe didn't matter much.

well, the analytics said cut the rough, keegan thought otherwise but stayed with the analytics!  if the greens were not so soft it might have helped US even with the cut rough.
