It's crazy how much more accurate field goal kicking has become in my lifetime. I looked on that list for who is the highest percentage kicker that retired before 2000. It's Nick Lowery, at #75.

Whats even crazier is they are able to be accurate while kicking consistently longer field goals.

I went down a YouTube rabbit hole recently and watched highlights of a Cowboys/Redskins game from the early 90s. At one point the Cowboys committed a penalty that took the upcoming field goal from, I think, 40 yards to 45 yards. The announcer said “They may have just taken themselves out of field goal range.”

That part of the game has certainly changed.

I was just telling my son that over 50 yards used to be the hail Mary type of kick you'd only try at the end of a half when you had no other options.  Now, it's almost routine under 60.

It's as if you start paying people millions to get really good at a very specialized skill, at least 32 people will answer the call.

It's a pretty cool story. Not drafted and struggles to catch on with a team as he's cut by the rams and ravens before seeing any action. Philly picks him up on the practice squad, he fills in for one week and kicks the game winner, then Philly lets him go. Chargers have to pick him up a month later, and he promptly kicks the game winner for them as time expires.

Chargers were smart enough to hang onto him, and now he's just L-I-V-I-N it up in SoCal on a $22M contract (12.5 guaranteed).

Dicker the f'n kicker!
