I’m wasted tonight and have a very distorted view of the game but I just think this a young team that doesn’t know how to close out games especially when one of the greatest players in the history of basketball is playing out of his mind at an age that he has no business being as great as he is. I will wait patiently for his hamstring to snap and their entire season get run into the gutter. In the meantime, they brought Fox in to be the closer and it doesn’t look like he could close down a bar. I’m not quite ready to give up on him and his atrocious contract after three fucking games but he needs to get right with Jesus / Wemby or things are going to get awkward quickly.

I’ve been preaching patience for the last couple of years. I’m still preaching it. These guys are going to figure it out and Vic is the fucking messiah. So let’s all put on our big girl panties and see how this thing plays out before making any rush to judgment.

Did I mention I’m really really housed right now? Apologies for any weirdness. GSG.

fox isn't young, thats the concerning part

I had quit watching the Spurs much in the last few years because of the re-build. This year I’ve been all-in on them. Here are some random observations about this team:

1. They lack another important power forward. They need to create more balance, and have better D down in the lane.

2. Fox was a terrible get, at the price he costs. He’s a good but not great player. He’s also too limited on defense. We need to see more of Harper but I thought he wasn’t capable of playing the point? If not, then this team will never reach the promised land with Fox at point.
3. They don’t have enough pure scorers who can create their own shot. Vassell and Castle are being relied on too much. They need one more strong scorer who can provide instant offense, especially down the stretch.
4. They hustle, but their defense isn’t good enough. They get beat by back cuts all the time.
5. Johnson is just too frustrating. A ton of hustle but too many mistakes. Hopefully Castle’s mistakes drop as he gets more experience/better.
6. Barnes is an ok complementary player but has limited value.

This team is 2-3 players away from really competing, primarily because of the lack of offense, defense, and excellent pg play.

just some thoughts from a not spurs fan who watched the game last night. What is your halfcourt offense? I saw lots of transition buckets and then in halfcourt the guards still pushing it like its transition. Wemby in weird spots on the floor and really not part of a system to try and use his unique talents.

fox looks lost out there and out of place. Forcing the issue without any context of a system to play in.

Saying that, I have no clue what system will maximize Wemby on offense. He so good at so many different things. Seems like maybe pick and roll at least, which they did towards the end of the game more, would be a good starting spot. Go the Joker or Alpi route with PG at the top of the key?

Counterpoint:

Couldn't watch after half the 1st.

Is that the play y'all are saying the refs didn't give continuation? That's nuts.

It's crazy how the vibes on this team are so off without Harper. That dude is a soothing offensive balm, and when he's back he should start.

Fox is, hopefully, just getting his game flow back after months of being out. But he shouldn't be point or leading the offense.

Harper can absolutely play point, as seen in the first 5 games of the season.

He sees the floor already better than every other Spur out there. Drives in and finds open shooters if the D collapses or just finish as needed.

And with Wemby they had a +36 rating in 78 minutes played.

I wouldn't be shocked if he ends the season as the Spurs 2nd best player, unless Castle really levels up also. But he's already better with the ball and faster off the dribble than Castle.

That’s really interesting, because in the draft they talked about him as an off-guard and not a pg. If he can play the point that would be huge. I missed the first few games of the season because I hadn’t bought the regional sports package yet. I was waiting to see how much they improved.

He played the best point guard this team has seen since Anthony Parker Jr. Dude is amazing. If Fox is going to be a hero chucker, Dylan is sorely needed. Probably would have won at least one of those games with him.

Fox can give us offense, I blame Mitch for allowing the team to play with such a short leash. You have a ten point lead halfway through the 4th, you should be able to maintain it. Don't squander three consecutive possessions on a guy who's been ice cold. How about feeding the 8 foot guy who's playing with fire and swagger. Infuriating.
