So new GM's first priorities:

1) Call Dirk and give him a key to the facility. Dude should have an office there if he wants one.

2) Press conference that brings a lot of transparency about what the path forward is.

3) Commit to the tank. They don't need to do a fire sale, but teams will absolutely want a Gafford or PJ for a playoff run this year. I think you have to do Klay a solid and get him to a team he wants to go to and get him off the books for next season. I might be in the minority, but I would not trade Kyrie. Just let him sit out the rest of the year and bring him back next year. I think AD is going to have to come back and play for us to trade him for anything of value. He needs to not be a point forward, though. That made me want to gouge my eyes out.

4) Related to number 3, but if Kidd is not on board with tanking, he should be canned. I've never been a huge fan of his and if he's going to prove to be a stubborn ass hole, goodbye to him.

5) PG is the most immediate need for next year and beyond. Address that with the lottery pick and/or with free agency next summer.

All-in-all, they are actually in a much better spot to rebuild around Flagg than they were around Luka in 2018.

I guess we have to tank this year because this is our only unprotected first round pick until 2031. So that's pretty cool.

Yup. Not going to have a chance for a pick this high again for awhile. And not because we'll be good...

This is a great year to sell off and be at the top of the lotto odds. As long as they don't get fleeced Nico style or take on albatross contracts you should have some decent assets and some cash to throw around in 2027 around a young core of Flagg + high lotto pick. If they do this right, this doesn't have to be as painful as it may have been under Cuban who would have refused to fall out of the 9-10 play in game.

Lots of people did. Mark Cuban being the notable one.

I haven’t heard any criticism except some jackass at a Rangers game behind home plate incessantly yelling it. Well fuck Cuban. He let the devil in the door, and I’ve been a Mavs fan a lot longer than that jackass owning the team and inserting himself into the equation.

Agreed for the most part, but this “doing Klay a solid and get him to a contender” - who gives a shit?  There is little market for him. Just jettison his ass. The Mavs don’t need to do any more solids for teams or players.

I really agree on Kyrie (not so much Kidd).  This team is at least .500 with him. AD and Klay need to go asap. Cooper, Max, and PJ need to form a core and should be considered untouchable. Kyrie needs to be here through 26-27 and we need to identify 1-2 ball handlers/creators. Prob one through high draft pick and one in free agency.

Fuck Mark Cuban. He doesn't get to say shit about fuck anymore. It's partially his fucking fault for selling the team to a group that didn't give a shit about Dallas, the Mavericks, the team, the fans, Dirk, etc. So yeah, fuck Cuban.

Cuban is now sleeping on a 25 inch mattress stuffed with $1000 bills instead of the 23 inch one he had before. Winning!

The point of trading Klay is to start to hopefully repair your reputation with players and to get Klay off the books for next year. The Mavs suck ass and they are approaching the 2nd apron--meaning they have no room to do anything.

Ok I understand that. Though, the new GM will have more to do with how players perceive the Mavs than how they treated a 36 yo washed up non-asset.

To your point, keeping Kyrie will be a bigger selling point than how they treat Klay.

wrt moving the team, because I'm curious... hypothetical, the voters of texas tell the adelsons to kick rocks, sports gambling will never come here, they never get to build a casino, etc... so then they want to move the team to vegas and do whatever the hell it is they do....  could the NBA prevent the move?  if they could, would they prevent the move?  would the other owners have to vote on it?  is there anything stopping them from moving the team if they decided to move the team?

Just incredible how there is literally no return from trading Luka. Davis is a good player who never plays.

One of the most lopsided trades I have ever seen that made 0% sense for one side and instantly tanked them. AD never plays, Kyrie is hurt and aging. Our now best player is unproven, who knows what becomes of him. We really went from NBA Finals appearance to a grim future in a matter of months. They seem to be destined for the 90s level of sucking unless something drastically changes.

Uhhh... hate to tell you this, but Cuban absolutely tanked in that exact position so they wouldn't have to give up that pick to New York that turned into Lively. You don't think Cuban was on board for that? Even when the Mavs were at the end of the Dirk era before they got Luka, Cuban was quoted as saying that they were going to suck for a good while until they were able to find another star and build it back up.

With regard to the path forward... I would not tear down to the studs. It doesn't make any sense to if you only control your own first round pick for next year. I have some news: this team is going to lose a shit load of games as long as Kyrie is out, just about no matter what else is done. It's a roster construction that was build around Luka, it makes no sense as is. So you can call it a tank, but it's really just a bad team in a tough conference. The Mavs are going to lose, and lose a lot.

So, suck this year, hopefully get lucky again in the lottery, move some pieces around if you can get some value, then run it back next year with a healthy Kyrie, more experienced Flagg, maybe a healthy AD (lol), and some retooling around some of the role players. Depending on how Flagg develops, you can put together a pretty decent team going forward out of it.

One more thing... I've been watching a few Mavs games (more than actual Mavs fans it seems) and it's annoying as fuck how your announcer constantly refers to Cooper Flagg as "Coop". Call him Cooper, fine. Call him Flagg, fine. But Coop sounds fucking stupid. Is your play by play guy an Aggie?

This frustration with the Mavs doesn’t stop at Nico. You have someone with a mind boggling amount of money that doesn’t care about you as a fan, doesn’t care about a lot of people in this country, and only wants to get more, more, more money. They want to fully control your life, and take as much as they possibly can from you. Until Americans realize this and start responding accordingly, nothing will get better, only worse.

Tickets to downstairs NBA tickets of a regular season game in decent seating areas already cost $400+ per seat. The days of the average American taking their kids to a ball game are over. And it will continue to get worse over the next decade until 85%+ of the population can’t go to sporting events. That’s where it’s headed. But ya, Nico does suck and it’s good he’s gone. But he’s only a small part of the problem.

They only began to tank when it was mathmatically obvious that they had no shot at making the play in. It was after they blew a big lead in a game against the Hornets late in the season that Luka sat and the Mavs went full tank the last few games of the season. Do you see anyone claiming they'll be good without Kyrie and AD out? If you are going to suck, may as well get some assets this year, maximize your odds of getting a good pick while you can and shed some salary while you're at it. Why rush Kyrie and AD back for what is going to be a bad year anyway? If you can get value out of PJ Washington or Gafford and shed some salary sending Klay to a contender, you absolutely do it at this point to begin to get some assets back. Why would you want to be a borderline second apron lotto team? It makes no sense.

You may be the first person I've ever seen complain about Mark Followill. He's one of the best in the NBA..

The DFW media was real uppity after they hit the lotto, as if this was some master stroke Nico planned all along.

I get what you are saying but that's how it works in that world. CEO's get golden parachutes all the time after going scorched earth and making bad decision after bad decision. Absolutely had to fire him, no way around it. The whole franchise became a mockery based on one move, which he's responsible for.

I still believe some funny business was going on. Trading him to the biggest market in the NBA, for pretty much nothing, at like midnight on a random Saturday night. Nico has ties to LA. That was the only team that was contacted for this trade. Dallas then gets the #1 pick months later. Did the NBA put the call in to give the Lakers Luka and they'd reward Dallas with the #1 pick? With as crooked this league is, 100% plausible. If you want to trade Luka, wait until the summer and wait for the long line of suitors and make them bid against themselves. Dallas could have gotten a huge haul. Not a broken down AD and some throw in junk.

This was like trading Dirk the year after he lost to Miami in the Finals. Both right in the middle of their prime.

Seems plausible to me. It is the NBA we are talking about. Just a step above boxing in terms of corruption.

This is wrong. They tanked to avoid the play-in/playoff in order to keep their draft pick. They were fined for it:

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/apr/14/dallas-mavericks-fined-tanking-investigation

FWIW, that was 100% the correct decision for the organization at the time.

The thing you’re missing is we are right at the 2nd apron. We suck and have no way to get better  after the lottery pick this upcoming year. I think you have to get rid of Klay and at least one big. It’s dumb to carry 4 centers in this NBA.

even if they hadn’t tanked, they still wouldn’t have made the play in game.

They were still alive for the post season when they made the decision, it’s right in your screen grab. They lost the game to make sure they didn’t make the playoffs no matter what the outcome of those games. Just because their tanking wouldn’t have mattered either way doesn’t change that

I said it was mathematically obvious they had no shot. Which it was to everyone who paid attention to the Mavs late season implosion. They needed to win three in a row (coming off a stretch they had just lost 7 of 8 while trying to win) and needed a double digit underdog of bench warmers to win on last day among other things to even have a coin flip chance of making the play in.
