I understand both sides of the argument, and whether or not this team is "good enough" to win is irrelevant. What's relevant is we will have no idea if we don't get the chance.

I want that chance. Will we get it? Highly unlikely. But get to 10 wins and get more practices in for every player coming back next season. But make no mistake, this team, much like in college basketball, could go on a run if we made the playoffs. Disregard the OT with UK and MSU, those are also irrelevant because we beat them. The "how" doesn't matter, at all. Look at the Final Four in basketball. Teams that play in wtf conferences make runs all the time and have beaten blue bloods. It's not like we don't have the talent to do the same in football.

We're closer in talent to Georgia, Ohio State, and Bama than we are to aggy, if we go by HS recruiting, and even portal adds. The only wtf portal add I can remember is Velton Gardner from SMU, and he lost an eye in like game 2 or 3 last season and we still make the semis without a RB room. All we had was Wisner. So if we can make the semis with just one RB, whose to say we can't this year?

But, at the end of the day the loss column is what matters. They aren't going to throw out the Ohio State game just because we're the only team to play them close and out gain them in yards. A loss is a loss, and we followed that up by getting tagged by UF, and then needed a body bag after Georgia. If you're a supposed "QB guru, offensive mastermind" and you have lost to Mike Bobo three times in a row, then we have a coaching problem. At no point should Sark look fucking lost after landing top 4 recruiting classes the last 4 years, and the #1 class last year. Zero. Zilch. Ineptitude is what is keeping us out. That's on Sark.

The problem is and always has been the polls - the rankings to the left of each team should not yet exist - but they make great talking points and fodder for television ratings

This should be the order of SEC teams chosen for the CFP and there should be a limit on number of teams chosen.

The SEC already had a playoff and this is the result

The CFP is not and should not be the SEC invitational tournament

The CFP committee’s lone job should be ranking/seeding said teams relative to the other conferences

Texas Tech has not played anyone good, and despite that, they aren't undefeated. They would not be favored against any SEC playoff team, and would not be favored against Texas. In fact, I would even say that Tech would struggle against Tennessee and Florida.

I don't know. Maybe they'll play defense now that Kiffin is gone. The committee isn't dropping a 1 loss team completely out of the playoff. Maybe they drop back a space but they'll give them a home game.

The different iterations of the playoff system required different scheduling strategies. The goalposts keep moving.  In the past, having a strong OOC win was an important data point that could mean the difference bw in or out. A loss in a game like that, along with an undefeated or at most one-loss conference record meant you could still get in. So the cost/benefit made sense. Now, with the expanded field and auto bid situation, it no longer does. In hindsight, the tOSU was the difference bw being in or out, all else remaining the same.

The playoff system for college football is absurd, and always has been. When the system was created, with polls and bowls, less money at stake and all the rest no one foresaw where it was going to go. Change has been slow and difficult, all because of money and the relative power of everyone at the trough.  The point of the playoff has never been about what is best for the fans, certainly, or the teams - players and coaches - but the institutions with the most power, the TV networks, the schools and conferences.

From an organizational standpoint, the P4 and G5 should be separate divisions. I have no fucking idea why the G5 has an iota of leverage to give them a guaranteed spot other than pure charity. It's total bullshit. They have no chance at a title and absolutely don't belong.  The P4 need to just take over college football entirely and officially from the NCAA. It's already slowly mostly happened. The conferences need to realign into 8 or 10 team divisions that are roughly equal. With 8, top two from each division make the 16 team playoff.  Conferences cease to exist.  CCGs cease to exist.  With roughly 64 teams and a robust set of scheduling rules we would have more higher quality games in the regular season.  The patty-cake games should go away altogether.

The above scenario would probably result in higher revenue.  The new Division two would have their own playoffs and a legit chance for a national championship those schools have never had.

All of this said, it would require some entities with power to give it up so it will probably never happen.  Also, the chaos and madness is part of what I hate and love most about CFB. So in the end the excitement, intrigue and distraction value is probably a wash

this.  before aggy and Neb left, when we were in the Big 12 we needed a strong OOC game because it was 2 teams(4 later) to raise our SOS but we didn't necessarily need tOSU(even though we did play them)/Mich/Bama. when they left we needed a pretty high level OOC game because we only had OU, really, to drive SOS.

now we don't really need any high level OOC game.  we don't and won't schedule Rice and 2 other UTEP likes.  We just need a mid level P4 team(which we could lose to but odds are in our favor).

After watching Texas early in the season, I thought it would take very good coaching to win 8 games. Sark and the staff failed the spring, but managed the fall pretty damn well. Texas is a flawed team with elite talent sprinkled all over the roster. Scheduling the OSU game was an own goal, but this team also some real weaknesses and took too long to get going. I do think Texas is one of the 10 best teams in the nation. Overall not the complete failure of a season that it looked like they were heading to. Hoping lessons were learned in terms of scheduling and self-evaluation in the winter and spring.

Tech would struggle against most of the teams in the SEC. They’d finish in the bottom half of the league every year.

For what? I already told you, among the 13 teams ranked ahead of Texas by the AP, Texas is better than at least four: three teams it already beat (Vandy, ousux, aggy) and the teams you already agreed it would be favored against (Miami, Notre Dame, BYU). If you think Tech would be favored, you'd be in the minority.

Well we had those in SJSU, SHSU, and UTEP, and the only one we looked competent in was SHSU, and they're 1-7 and last in C-USA. Had Flood/Sark actually fucking paid attention, we wouldn't have had Stroh out there being aloof and a weak ass who got punished by even lower-level players, because he's a lower-level player himself.

I didn't say we would beat or be favored against every team, though. We know Ohio State and Georgia would be favored. I don't need to debate about Indiana, Oregon, Ole Miss, or Bama, because it doesn't matter. Even if we assume those six teams should be ranked ahead of Texas, that still makes Texas a top ten team. The rest are "the obvious" (to borrow your words), but just to be thorough, we beat Vandy, ousux, and aggy, and we have a better record than ND against common opponents.

Tech has no common opponents because of its incredibly weak schedule. You cannot say with a straight face that Vegas would project Tech to beat Texas. That's just reality. The same can be said for BYU.

Miami is the closest call because it has a better record and beat the only common opponent (Florida) albeit not at the swamp. If we grant that Miami should be ahead, just to be conservative, that means seven teams clearly should be ranked ahead of Texas: Ohio State, Georgia, Indiana, Oregon, Ole Miss, Alabama, Miami. The remaining teams (Vandy, ousux, aggy, ND, Tech, BYU) might have better records, but they would not be favored against Texas because Texas is a better team with better athletes, and Texas has already beaten half of them.

I do a lot of gambling and we used to spend an inordinate amount of time guessing lines before they came out so we had opinions on the game. We are arguing over texas being 2.5 or 3.5 favorites over tech on a neutral field. Athlete advantage, coaching advantage and more of a public team. I don’t see any chance tech opens up as the betting line favorite.
we have Texas as dogs in any road game we’d play or neutral to Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, Indiana (probably- pending next week if OSU chokes them out bc the athlete differential is super great) Domers and Bama. I’d bet on us to beat bama but they’d probably be favored.
it’s arguable that aggy would be favored at a neutral site as they were just a 2.5 point favorite but I always believed the computers with us having a greater chance of winning plus the data point we just got. Vegas could run that back as a pick em or slight aggy favorite at neutral site.
we have Texas favored over all else in college football. Ole Miss would have been a tough call before Kiffin left.  Now with him gone nah.

Then don't schedule Ohio State. Problem solved.

Someone upthread said something about "unwinnable" games. That's not a thing. At Texas, every game should be winnable. Hell, a lot of people thought we could beat Ohio State. So it's not about "unwinnable" games. It's about "unlosable" games.

Anytime you schedule a home/home against a top 15 program, there's a chance to lose. Especially if it's away. Doesn't matter who it is. Ohio State coming to Austin next year, there's a chance they lose that game. That's just the reality of talent accumulation in college football.

Schedule UTRGV or New Mexico State, or LA Tech... Those games should be virtually unlosable.

If we get left out of the playoffs, the committee is saying you get 2 losses max and it doesn't matter who what when how those losses are. So give yourself the most margin for error and go undefeated in non conference. So just schedule all cupcakes, go undefeated in non conference, now you have margin for error in conference.

tOSU needs our game more than we do IMO.  but yes. go 3-0 and 7-2 and in the playoff.  even if those 2 losses are to bottom half of SEC you will have offsetting wins.

might be good to look at situation where the good OOC games aren't home and home/back to back years but go 10-2 no matter what and we are in.

No seriously, I am not sure what counts as a "projection" to you. My opinion is based on the fact that Texas Tech doesn't have the Jimmies or the Joes to compete with elite programs. A team with a good record from a weak conference does not fool Vegas. Why do you think Penn State was heavily favored against Boise last year, even though Boise had a guy with stats comparable to Barry Sanders? I don't have a problem with Tech getting an automatic bid and being the representative from the Big XII. I even think they have a puncher's chance of upsetting a team like Texas A&M if they were to meet. But Vegas would still have aggy favored. SEC teams just have more depth and have been tested more than Tech has. If you think we're just being biased, by all means, test that theory by going somewhere else and asking what they think Vegas would be likely to do and why.

I still remember when we had to boatrace Okie Lite in Dallas to win a beauty contest over Florida State. Alabama can definitely be punished by the committee if it shits the bed in Atlanta. A close loss, maybe they're still in, but a blowout hurts them as much as it would help the opposing team achieve a higher seed.
