  1. Tex-Mex CenTex BBQ Italian Spanish (tapas!) thai
  2. If you’re looking for a pre-64 Model 70 to use, try Shedhorn Sports in Ennis, Montana. I was in there 3 weeks ago and they had a double handful of ‘em out on the racks. Not pristine, used hunting guns, but generally pretty nice. I’m not in the market, so I didn’t take notes on calibers, but they’d be my first call. If you want an older hunting gun, best to go where the hunting was-few seem to understand how both whitetail and mulie populations have exploded in Texas over the last 40+ years-after the heyday of Winchester bolt guns.
  3. Conference USA wiki page has been edited to show WVU as a “future” member. No, I didn’t do it.
  4. In and out of FTL twice a year; it’s always the same crowd. Check the wrists, though-some of the bums (boat guys) are wearing $20,000+ watches. Worst for me is MIA; it’s as oppressive as La Guardia with more voodoo. Is stimulus money actually driving these crowds? I figured all that money was long gone.
  5. The “black drink” of the Comanches; they traveled annually to the Texas coast to the yaupon groves for ceremonies. Much vomiting and many hallucinations followed. I have a yaupon right outside my preferred couch, but I’m afraid of it-
  6. Yes, they are. University of Phoenix East.
  7. I agree with your point, but you need to re-think SMU; I have 4 extended family members that bought their master’s degrees there (yes, I meant “bought”). Academic integrity? Not their strong suit………
  8. Looks like a finish for me, too-half a steak, 2 bites of beans, 0 potato salad, but the whiskey’s almost gone. Waiter, a go box, please! It’s hard getting old………
  9. “Not necessarily bbq” is right. Their rolls and desserts still guilty pleasures, just like 60+ years ago when my parents would take us infrequently to Underwood’s in Wichita Falls.
  10. Brownwood is a BBQ desert, IMHO. L&B Roadhouse in Lometa has decent to good brisket, ribs are only OK. Haven’t been to Firehouse in Lampasas since they burned the place down accidentally (irony, right?) and moved up the road, but will try it soon. Their brisket used to be pretty damned good, ribs just ribs (meaning a lot better than no ribs). Always distracted by German stuff in Fredericksburg, so don’t know about BBQ there. New place place very recent in a brand new and expensive looking building in Burnet, need to try it out-on 281 north of downtown, across from Starbucks. Sigh.
  11. ^^^Generous plate of shredded/chopped/sliced cabrito. This is goat country, but still not easy to find.
  12. I can be in Cooper’s in less than an hour; way way overpriced and under flavored. If you have have to go, get the pork chop. Their sauce is traditionally a generic IGA barbecue sauce cut with vinegar and some Tabasco added. Beans are free, though….
  13. Timberline Steaks and Grille in Denver (DIA); steaks fine, good selection of Colorado beers

    2021 Drunk Thread

Strikes me as a little harsh. I’ve drunk more than my share of wines in Napa, Sonoma, and eastern Washington, and lots of ‘em are great. For Fredericksburg, avoid the sweet at all cost and go for Heath (sparklers), Grape Creek, Pedernales, or Brennan Super Nero (Texas Wine Collective/Nero D’Avolo). The wineries working with happy Texas grapes, like Tempranillo and Nero are catching on...........
  15. A new contender: Pecan House Grill in San Saba. Half pound standard burger on a brioche bun (always questionable, IMHO) but cooked exactly as I asked. The thing is, they have the best onion rings I’ve ever eaten! Lightly breaded, not greasy, onion itself cooked but not overcooked.
  16. Definitely need an after-action report on this one! I’ll be at home, grilling for 2 and drinking for at least 3.
  17. Bush 1 was interesting for the family history info, but I was so overwhelmed by the BCS gulag I was itching to get the hell out of town. Been in the LBJ many times, good for a single major visit, then watch for their special exhibits: the one on Cronkite a few years ago was mind bottling good!
  18. Ranch Pizzeria works. Also The Metropolitan in Amarillo. La Baguette French Bistro in Colorado Springs. Hit all these places in the last 10 days.
  19. Great thread! For close trips, try: The Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg; I figured an hour visit-I was still in there 3.5 hours later The Old Jail in Albany (Texas)- prepare to be blown away The Panhandle Plains Historical Museum in Canyon-open all the drawers in the guns displays strongly second the Kimbell, FtW MOMa, and the DMA; AI Chicago and the Met in NY are simply beyond compare, unless you wander in the Louvre and the Musee d’Orsay reckon I’m a museum geek
  20. Hard 8 is OK, not nearly great Texas BBQ. Last time I was in Leo’s, I strolled in with another guy in a suit. Place got very, very quiet instantaneously; the ‘cue was great. It was a long time ago, and we were the only white faces in the place, but folks pretty friendly once it was clear we only wanted food. Funny experience, and one of my favorite restaurant memories.
  21. This. So much this. Plastic everywhere in interiors, and the bouncing/vibration lead to failure................
  22. I finally burned up my old Craftsman 19.2V electric trimmer yesterday morning, so went to Home Depot and bought a 40V Ryobi. Out to test this morning; heavy as hell, powerful like a locomotive! Wore my 67 y/o candy ass out in about 45 minutes and still had 1/4 charge left on high speed. Charge, nap, run trimmer, repeat. Hope i didn’t buy more electric trimmer than I can handle...........
  23. This is going to be very interesting-the BATFE approach. Asking for a friend: so, if you already own an AR-15 pistol with a brace, do you have to now get it registered as an SBR? $200 more for $35 brace? Months of waiting? Where does the pistol reside while waiting for your stamp? Isn’t there a special engraving done on SBR’s? Any grandfathering? Using an EO to create this hassle is really disheartening.
  24. Blair’s Western Wear in Marble Falls carries Anderson Bean, nice drive out there
  25. Pretty good stuff, but I could introduce you to a gaggle of (older) genuine cowboys that never wear a straw hat-NEVER. Those are for farmers. I wear straw, starting probably tomorrow, but I’m no cowboy. Our family bootmaker, now deceased, (at least 12 pair), once told me that you should try on boots with a fresh pair of socks like you intend to wear; if the heel slip is there, it’s bullshit-the bootmaker wants you to fit the boot to your feet with sweat shrinkage. They should fit perfectly from first wearing. Hats? Take a look at thefedoralounge.com. If you want a nice hat, go custom and forget the overpriced crappy Stetson/Resistol lids. There’s much, much nicer out there for less money.
