I’ve been a Pokes fan since I was a very small kid and my grandpa took me to a Bedlam game in the mid 60’s, (We won). That doesn’t make me a better fan than anyone else, just been around long enough to remember the decades of near irrelevance of OSU football. We’d win some games we weren’t supposed to and had a few breakout seasons but that was about it. The problem with our fan base now is that all anyone under about 40 knows is a successful program. Les Miles started the swagger then Gundy made it expected for 18 years. These fans are standing on the shoulders of what Gundy built and complaining about the view. My fear is that now that he’s gone we’ll just quietly slip back to the lower tier of the conference. It was time for MG to go, but it certainly could have been handled better, and now that the change has come we’re going to have to come to the realization that we’re a relatively small school located in the middle of nowhere. Now I love me some Stillwater, but finding a great coach that’s willing to come take on the current dumpster fire we have going on and is willing to take over an under funded program and be happy living an hour away from decent shopping or restaurants isn’t going to be as easy as our fans think. We can afford a known coach but how long will they stay? I see a team in perpetual turmoil for the foreseeable future, and a hard lesson for our younger fans.
