  1. Two divisions of Marines, including my step grandfather (one of the men for whom I am named), and one Army division landed at Saipan on 15 June 1944. D-Day got most of the press, so Saipan was overshadowed and is largely forgotten, but it was a tough fight in its own right. It lead to the taking of Tinian and other islands from which B-29s could fly to bomb the Japanese home islands. It was an important step in the Pacific War.
  2. The Longest Day is one of my favorite books. Oral histories can be tricky, as memories fade and change, and self-interest is always an issue. Ryan did a fantastic job of sorting through all of that and letting the people who were there tell their little pieces of the big story. One day I would love to tour the invasion area. Pegasus Bridge, Pointe du Hoc, and Sainte Mère Églese are all places on my bucket list
  3. I like the idea of tying the size of the fine to the ability to pay. In the US, huge corporations get away with polluting air and water because the fines are less than the cost to treat, so they chose to pay the fines. Meanwhile a small town with problems at their wastewater plant can be hit with the same size fine, with far, far less ability to pay it.
  4. Blowing a dam and flooding lowlands is a defensive action, meant to impede freedom of offensive movement. Ukraine has no reason to blow the dam, and many reasons not to blow it. Without that water, the economic value of Crimea just fell considerably. Once Ukraine retakes Crimea, they will have to provide drinking and agricultural water, and this makes doing so much more difficult and costly. Ukraine doesn't need that challenge added to the list. Finally, the damage done to the dam was too extensive to be the result of shelling. That came from well placed and coordinated demolition charges. This is Ruzzia doing their raccoon imitation: If they can’t eat it, drink it, fuck it, or steal it, then shit on it and fuck it up.
  5. Schloss' face! Priceless!
  6. Whole Hog barbecue. Smells nice.
  7. There's some great news on a Monday afternoon. Rot in hell, traitorous fucker.
  8. During WW II, the German 88 mm gun was originally an anti aircraft weapon. It was then found to be a fantastic indirect fire artillery piece and the best anti tank gun of the war. But you are correct, here. Russia may find that they need air defense more than they need destroyed apartments in Kiev or Kharkiv.
  9. Sign maker must charge by the letter.
  10. Are you talking pictures or posters?
  11. Damn, I love this place. Sports, politics, tites, music, film, and Classical Greek history. What a well rounded, if somewhat maladjusted, bunch.
  12. I used to have a co-worker who graduated from Tech, and he summed all of this up perfectly: Texas and Oklahoma are the Big Brother and his Cool Friend/Enemy. aggy is the Middle Brother who desperately wants Big Brother's attention and will follow him around and act a fool trying to get it. Tech is the Youngest Brother who does the same with Middle Brother, but mainly just likes to piss them all off.
  13. I'm an end-of-the-period Boomer, and I've always assumed the same. I have six more years before I find out whether that is a correct assumption.
  14. I tried making some candied bacon yesterday and am disappointed in the result. It's not crisp like the other candied bacon that I've had before. Still, even poor candied bacon is better than most things in life, so I'll take it and keep trying.
  15. Maybe he has no more "F"s to give.
  16. I half expected it to kick off May 8, during the One Tank Parade.
  17. The longer you wait, the higher the risk of having your plans get into Russian hands. The Germans delayed the attack at Kursk to get Panther tanks into service. The Russians got ahold of the German plans, down to the minute that the attack was to jump off, and used the delay to shape the battlefield and prepare very deep defensive positions and position reserves in the best places for the counter attack after the Germans were stopped. From what I've seen, the Russian defensive positions in Ukraine are modeled on their positions around Kursk. As has been mentioned, too much delay risks a loss of political will to support Ukraine in Western countries. Lack of action waiting for F-16s and other modern jets may result in those jets never coming. Finally, too much delay will undercut the morale in the Ukrainian Army. Once they get everything fine tuned and ready for the fight, it is impossible to hold that edge indefinitely. Too much delay also sends a signal of weakness to both the Ukrainian Army and the Russian Army. As the wise Tuco Ramirez said, "When it's time to shoot, shoot. Don't talk."
  18. That fat bitch just lives to fuck with people. She's got her routine polished and ready to whip out at the drop of a hat, even if she has to drop the hat.
  19. And the Dutch.
  20. Ukraine should be sending those drones after the Kerch bridge, the Russian Black Sea naval installations, oil refineries and storage depots near Ukraine, and strategic rail and road bridges within 100 miles of the battle area. Use them for deep strikes needed to shape the battle area. Psyops have value, but Ukraine needs to do real damage to the army that they are facing more than they need psyops. In my opinion.

  22. If they were not intended to be fleeced, they would not have been made sheep.
  23. It's still exciting to think of Ukraine hammering Russian shipping in Berdyansk, though.
