  1. I could be reading too much into your words but to me it still seems that you are equating watching what is essentially space magic with belief in space magic. I definitely agree that there is a veneer of unearned plausibility with the large majority of science fiction (especially TV / Movies, because it's hard enough reading pages of semi-realistic space physics, let along showing it), but I'm not sure that equates to belief in reactionless mass. If your point is that space magic is more accepted than fantasy magic I would agree but I think it's at such a superficial level that it's a distinction without a difference. In other words, is a passive unexamined view that warp drive (just to pick an example) is real actually very common? Even if so, would it tie in to a belief in the purpose of life / desire for the future? Maybe so, something to think about while I try to avoid work on a Friday morning.
  2. I think you're making some pretty broad assumptions about the "pro-sci fi crowd" and their beliefs. I ready a lot of sci-fi, some "hard" (which at least try to pay lip service to the laws of physics) and some soft (space opera). Part of our family time after dinner is watching Star Trek with the kids while working on puzzles. I exchange Star Trek memes with friends. I don't watch / read sci-fi because I think that is the ultimate destination, I read sci fi because good sci-fi is a commentary on current society with room to explore flexible solutions. I (and others I've talked to) don't believe there is some grand purpose of life. Some believe in the likelihood of extra-terrestrial life, some are agnostic. As I think we both agree, the belief that ET life is likely is not founded in any logical or scientific principle but rather because people want it to be true. But I'm not sure that this is any more or less prevalent than non-sci-fi people. Don't mistake what people like to imagine as a relatively optimistic future with the actual prediction of a future.
  3. @immamac or @Getafix - can we get a title edit? I don't want to risk taking Colin for granted and losing his commitment because we didn't capitalize EDGE.
  4. Cool to see the obvious affection he has for his brother.
  5. Now now now, let's be fair to @Mikey4. I'm sure he is super outraged at all this. It's just that it is exacly as outrageous as providing social services like education and healthcare to those that need them.
  6. Negged for making me think of that little shit.
  7. It's so bananas seeing Twice, DDD, and Troph offering Lidig8r even a half-assed defense in this thread. I get that you know him and I'm not suggesting you punch him in the face next time you see him, or even text him and ask "wtf", because ultimately this board doesn't matter much in real life. But in this thread he came in, dropped a turn in the punch bowl by calling it a place where reason and logic aren't welcome, then made a post with several factual inaccuracies and admitted ignorance over the main source of frustration. He has since left this thread and I strongly suspect will not return. This is shitty behavior and if being called out on it means he never returns then I don't think that's a bad thing. It's not hard to bring some value to the board. Hell, even bosa brings cheer and smiles to the board every time he posts pictures of tasty looking burgers. I'm not sure Lidig8r is at that level.
  8. I assumed he was talking about kick-ass Gary Busey movies.
  9. No. It just gives old snowflakes the fleeting remnant of a chubbie to think that someone may have been offended.
  10. I think I found your first mistake.
  11. Man, I like your posts but this schtik of "oh, it's not so bad, the Republicans are scared and desperate" ignores a much simpler fact. They are doing this because they can. It gains them more power. It hurts the people they want to hurt. When people do bad things, sometimes it is Jean Valjean stealing a loaf of bread to feed starving kids and give credence to a nice plot line in Deep Space Nine. More often it's a seven year stealing a car because he wants to do it because it's fun, fun to do bad things.
  12. Farting Dreamer is not a Cloakroom guy. After all, he probably has about as many CR posts as you do.
  13. I would actually argue that it's 4th and 1 and we're not sure if Bush or White is going to get the ball. We have to stop them to have any chance to win, but stopping doesn't guarantee shit. We have to fucking execute after the stop. Even if Biden wins in 2024, "victory" is not assured without a lot of effort. It just stops the sure loss.
  14. This is good to know. Most people who believe in conspiracy theories tell everyone that they are really dumb and gullible. The fact that you are letting us know straight out that this isn't the case for you is helpful. It must be why you carry a lot of weight on this site.
  15. Yeah, but they were pure boozehounds. None of that sharing booze with other teammates bullshit. YANKEES LEGACY!!!
  16. "Manufacturers will have to go in to manufacturing chairs where people can stand up because they won't be able to sit down because of the burning in their butthole..." So, uh, not a chair then?
  17. You said it was relevant. If you're not sure how it's relevant I don't think it's relevant. I can't speak for AOC but the point I am trying to make is I have know idea of a trillion is enough. I don't know if a quadrillion is enough. We don't have enough information to do anything more than guess as to probability of intelligent life on other planets. There is no informed speculation, just wishful thinking by anyone who thinks there either is or isn't intelligent life on other planets.
  18. Yes it's large but why is relevant? How do you use that number? What is the probability of sapient (or sentient, however you want to define it) life on any of those planets?
  19. What a dumb meme. Everyone knows that Gore would poured just as much gasoline. /Rimbo
  20. Man, Waddle is going to be great when he enters the portal and becomes a Longhorn.
  21. Sure reparations won't be part of national 2024 platform but I also wouldn't dismiss it as "fringe". I fully admit that I don't know the ramifications / likelihood of passing but in California there was a state task board that has met and presented recommendations to the state senate including economic reparations. Those weren't defined, as the task force specifically said they weren't able to come up with a number and recommended economists come up with something, but I do think there is something brewing. Now the word reparations can mean way different things to way different people, but again just wouldn't dismiss it as kooky talk.
