  1. Walk on four pitches...runners on first and third, one out. Hodo up to bat.
  2. Hmmm...22.50 ERA for the new pitcher. Is that good?
  3. I understand that we should be striving for championships and all, but historically speaking, that just doesn't happen with Texas Men's Basketball. In the last 50 years, we have been to 1 Final Four, 3 Elite Eights, and 8 Sweet Sixteens. Tom Penders and Rick Barnes, the most successful coaches in school history, combined for a grand total of 5 Conference Championships in 27 years. The norm for Texas basketball is a regular season win total in the mid-20s, a second or third place finish in conference and a first or second round exit from the NCAA tournament. Based on our history, I just don't think that expecting Shaka to be fired if he doesn't win conference championships and go three or four games deep into the NCAA tournament on a regular basis is realistic. There just isn't that kind of tradition here for basketball. Perhaps it's a function of my age, but I just have more tempered expectations for the basketball team than I do for the other sports.
  4. Would it though? In that unlikely scenario, or an even more unlikely scenario that we win it all ( and no, I'm not suggesting that that is a possibility, just using exaggeration to illustrate a point), it seems that some would probably choose to be upset over the inevitable contract extension that Shaka would receive, rather that being happy that the team is winning. All things considered, it is the University of Texas Longhorns, not the Shaka Smart Longhorns or the Tom Herman Longhorns, and I'm happy when the Longhorns win. I do wish they would do more of it, and more consistently and convincingly, however.
  5. Take your drink to end of the bar, buddy Come on, now don't be a fool I'd rather have the hot seat in SIng-Sing prison Than to sit down by her on that stool
  6. I assume you're too young to remember the implosion of the 1981-82 team. Started off something like 14-0, rose to a top 5 ranking, and were not just beating, but destroying everyone they played, and that included Arkansas and a Houston team featuring Hakeem Olajuwan and Clyde Drexler that made it to the final four at the beginning of the Phi Slamma Jamma years. Then we play Baylor, and our starting forward, Mike Wacker, who was an absolute stud, destroys his knee ending his season, and there was nobody else to pick up the slack. Lasalle Thompson could do only so much on his own. Team finished something like 15-15, Abe Lemons was fired, and the Bob Weltlich era began. Dark days for UT BBall.
  7. Anybody else here remember the 1980 SMU game? Texas was 5-0 going into that game, ranked number 2 in the nation having just dispatched Oklahoma. The 1980 season got off to a great start, with a nationally televised Monday night game against Arkansas, which the 'Horns dominated. At this point, SMU was 3-2, the much vaunted "Pony Express" hadn't found it's giddy up yet, and they hadn't beaten Texas since about 1967, and on top of all that, Texas just didn't lose home games. We were on our way to a national championship run...everyone in the stadium knew it. Then the game was played. Fucking Craig James, that hookercidal maniac (allegedly), couldn't be stopped, Texas' offense couldn't do anything, and we ended up not scoring a TD in our own stadium in forever. Final score was 20-6, but the game really wasn't that close. The rest of the season totally collapsed, and we finished 7-5, with a loss to Lawrence Taylor's Tarheel team in the Bluebonnet bowl. That was the first time I learned to never get too emotionally invested in a game, or season...everything can change, instantly and with little/no warning. To the OP...thanks for digging at the scab...asshole.
  8. The Wild Bunch. Whatever happened to those guys? I pretty much lost touch with Longhorn sports for a while after I graduated, due to moving away from Austin after graduation, and then my job sending me overseas for a good part of the 90s and early aughts, but when I was on campus the Wild Bunch was a huge part of my enjoyment of attending games at DFF. I wasn't one of them, but I did sit among them, and they always made me feel welcome. I'd like to hear about what happened to them, and to what extent the current Occupy Left Field crew is an offshoot of the Wild Bunch. Honestly, I think the Wild Bunch could probably be thought of as the proto-Surly; fans who were absolutely passionate about their 'Horns, fanatically dedicated to supporting their team, giving absolutely zero fucks about who they pissed off while doing so, all while having a great time. Games at DFF during the early 80s were like a continuous party, at least of you were sitting behind first base, with a rotating cast of characters, all of whom could make you laugh your ass off. I miss those days.
  9. I've been enjoying the podcasts so far. Thanks for doing this. I imagine it's getting harder to come up with content now that there is no football for the next six months or so, so I'm wondering if you guys might be able to do some stuff on the baseball team. New season is right around the corner, so now might be a good time to start talking about it. I realize that baseball isn't one of the big revenue sports, but it is a huge part of the Longhorn athletic tradition, and I'm pretty sure a lot of Surly bastards out here, myself included, would enjoy some baseball content. Thanks for listening.
  10. Heh...fuck 'em. On the bright side, at least they haven't lost to Texas since 2010.
  11. Hmmm...doughnuts, burgers? My answer to his question number two would be maybe hit the gym.
  12. Your point being?
  13. Who are Collin and Michael, and were they doing their New Year's blind joke routine before 1975?
  14. One of the greatest SNL skits of all time:
  15. Dang...I know there's "still a lot of football yet to play", but if KC doesn't get a TD on this next possession AND stop TB on their next, this game is, for all practical purposes, over.
  16. I'm shocked he wasn't already in. Did he piss somebody off?
  17. Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to set me DVR. The think I like about TCM is that they show movies unabridged and unedited. I'm sure there will be disclaimers and warnings before the movie starts.
  18. Fat side up, or fat side down? Paper, aluminum foil, or no wrap at all? Does it really qualify as BBQ if it is done on a WSM? What does Grant think should be done to whomever is responsible for Senator Cornyn's brisket? Favorite tipple while smoking brisket?
  19. Maybe, but those from my generation might argue that the Vietnam war and Watergate made society more cynical. All of which might indicate that there is truly nothing new under the sun, and perhaps there is some small comfort in that.
  20. Abandoned land mines? Is your new job in Cambodia? Or maybe you meant to say abandoned coal mines...or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.
  21. Close, but I have a little more hair.
  22. For your listening displeasure:
  23. Perhaps you're right. I remember thinking my dad was ancient way back when I graduated. He was 56. I am older than that now, so yeah, I can see how you'd think I am an oldster. Don't worry, you'll be here one day, sooner than you think; suddenly realizing that you're the same age, or older than, your dad was at certain stages of you're life, and trying to convince yourself that it doesn't mean you're really old at all. You were just wrong when you were young...but you probably weren't wrong. *sigh* But just to clarify my original post, I wasn't commenting on the relative hotness of the women in the ad, just stating that they are annoying AF to listen to. "You got a edge, I got a edge...you got a UHHHH, and I got a UHHHH...." SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!!!! Jeeez...just thinking of it makes me ragey.
