    Tex Mex

Vibe is a moving target for a group of married dudes in their early 50s. Decent beer selections, solid margs, and no visible water stains on the ceiling is the floor. Thanks for the suggestions so far. Y mas closes at 9. So that might push it out of the running depending on what time the last of our group arrives, unpacks, and pregames.

So what's your favorite? LIke I said, it doesn't have to be super close. I'll mention Curra as well. I haven't had good interior in a minute. Of the 3 I mentioned, what's the consensus. Is El Dorado worth the trouble? Does Y Mas have a decent evening vibe or is it just straight-up delicious? Mama Betty's? Just okay? I've been to most of the standard fare during the years I lived in Austin and those that follow. These guys are from Texas, so I'm not taking them to Matt's or the like.

Thanks. I'll check it out. There's just four of us though.
  4. It was the free, online lessons that got you, right?

    Tex Mex

I'm hosting some friends from out of state (all originally from Houston), and they requested Tex Mex one night. My sister in law recommended El Dorado Cafe, which looks good. But we're planning to go on the Thursday night when everyone gets in, and the last arrival is at 5:20 p.m. I see they take reservations. So I guess we could shoot for 8:15 or 8:30. But I hate feeling rushed, particularly with Tex Mex. So for a combination of good food and decent evening vibe, would Enchiladas Y Mas or Mamma Betty's be a better choice? Other suggestions. We're in an Air B&B just east of 35 and north of campus. Closer could be better, but it doesn't really matter. What says the Surly Tex Mex Brain trust?
  6. Strangely, your avatar seemed to be shouting that.
  7. Don't the hookers come pre-brined with the blow?
  8. Italian dressing to marinade and season with Fiesta's Beef Fajita seasoning. I'm admittedly low-rent with my fajita prep,
  9. So a baby, in a boat, on a road walks into a bar with a poodle under one arm and a 5 lb. salami under the other arm. The baby sets the poodle on the bar, and the bartender says, I guess you won't be needing a drink. And the baby says, . . . .
  10. Wait, I thought it was a boat?
  11. Yeah, I heard for years that a TS in front of a tweed amp is just to much mids. But when it comes down to it, if you crank a tweed bassman and hit the front end with a tube screamer in a live setting, it sounds glorious and cuts through beautifully.
  12. If there's anything special about how they sound, I didn't hear it in the many years I owned one. My memory of that pedal is that the housing and connection points were cheap and it seemed doomed to break under foot. A reissue with a $40 analogman mod (either brown or silver) is a far better pedal for less money.

    Ace Frehley - RIP

Found my old 8 track. Showed it to my son, who responded, "I didn't know they made a KISS video game.

The older boy is coming home for the weekend and arriving late, and the highs have dipped under 90. I did all the roux and prep last night. So tonight, I'm just cooking gumbo. Stock is going to be great!
  16. We stayed at the Wynn for Phish, and post-show, this was a killer meal/drink situation. https://www.peppermilllasvegas.com/

It would have been a lot cooler if you'd kept that KISS lunchbox through high school.

    Ace Frehley - RIP

This one hurts a good bit. RIP Ace Frehley. In 1978, you gave my sister the ability to introduce me to rock music. I still have the second copy of the 8track after I wore out the first one. Should have bought the record I came across a while back. But this album absolutely fucks.
  20. I don't make it to a lot of games, but I've been to one Surly tailgate and, based on that experience, as long as Immamac still is putting them on, I wouldn't miss it for any game I was attending.
  21. There is a mold killing Kilz primer and a mold resistant Kilz paint that works well in mold prone areas. I don't know how different it is than the regular stuff, but it worked well in an area above our shower.
  22. A couple of Turkey Roasters would have been a cheaper and very effective option, but the 24x18 footprint of this thing was hard to pass up. It just slightly larger than a typical mini-fridge.
  23. Definitely gave that option and a Turkey Roaster some thought. But this is about the same price as a 30" Masterbuilt electric smoker but is purpose-built for what I want, and doesn't feel shitty in the least. Stainless steel, tempered front glass, 76 pounds, and well-reviewed. I've got it sitting on a table in my garage and don't feel like I've lost any space. It's about the size of a mini fridge. As someone who has bought a meat grinder and a sausage stuffer in the last two months, and an offset in the last year, I don't want to see the look I'd get for another smoker or BBQ-looking item, no matter how shitty, showing up at my front door.
  24. A couple of pieces of BBQ for a few hours, the cooler works great, particularly for travel. But this is just easy and purpose made for what want it for. With the offset, I don't cook overnight; for that, I break out the WSM and go to sleep. So if I get a long cook done at 10 pm and want to hold until the next day for lunch or dinner, I can either cram a brisket into a crockpot on warm (works well, but it's a tight fit), put it in my oven on warm, but the warm setting turns off after 3 hours, put it in the cooler, but that's not usually a 15+ hour solution and I end up stacking food on top of other food with plenty of juices in the bottom of the cooler by the end of it. I've gotten to the point where I'm cooking for medium sized groups enough times each year where something easy that holds a lot of food (and I don't have to raid the linen closet for old towels) just makes sense, particularly for the price. Honestly, just being able to crank out and hold the sides for Thanksgiving has me kind of giddy about this thing.
