  1. It just dawned on me that chips have become that gum from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where you chew it and you eat a whole meal.
  2. Calm before the storm and so forth.
  3. Follow up question. I'm just going to assume I remember that Matt's, like many Tex Mex places, has a burger and fries on the menu. In my experience, such Tex-Mex restaurant burgers tend to kick a little ass. I'm sure one of my kids probably ordered one in their younger years, but long shot: Anyone who's had one, Does a burger from Matt's hit pretty good?
  4. It's like when we complain about BBQ. This is us.
  5. It's not quite pizza level (even bad pizza is pretty good), but JJ's chips aren't even bad. I haven't found a good salt and vinegar chip that wasn't too vinegar heavy, and I love vinegar flavors. Off to search for malt-vinegar potato chips.

My understanding was that they had a side business that they couldn't report to the IRS. And you were eating a burger there?
  7. Honestly, for the amount of business they do and the fact that they consistently pack that space with a wait, the fact that I can go there and, not having "best meal ever" expectation, can order something that doesn't disappoint me is pretty remarkable. It still probably qualifies as that place in Austin (see my post above), but it has a good view in every direction and, I can't believe I'm saying this (see above), but I've enjoyed some good margaritas there.
  8. Beat me by mere minutes, although I definitely associate Highlights with the dentist's office.
  9. I mean, a Chicago Italian Beef - "Wet" is not an unglorious thing.
  10. I think Molina's is fine. It's not mind-blowing, but I wouldn't complain if someone suggested it, and I'd have the nostalgia factor and order Jose's Dip, which seems the same as Bob Armstrong dip, but I digress.
  11. As a native Houstonian, I kind of wondered if Houston's answer to this wasn't Molina's. I grew up with it and really love it, but since I'm the guy telling you I like it, I wonder if it's the one people who didn't grow up in Houston going to that really isn't that great? But I'm sure Houston has several that qualify. As a transplant to Tyler, I can tell you that Tyler's version of this was Gilbert's El Charro. That place sucked and old-school Tyler people loved it. Mercifully, it closed years ago.

I walked by the location on 24th for years after it "closed." This has to be some sort of cruel joke.
  13. Don't worry. Your heart will last you your whole life.
  14. Me at the tailgate if it only sells 9 more tickets:
  15. Thanks, I'll definitely give it a go soon. But for now, I need time and distance from Hamburger Chili Rice first.
  16. I almost shit myself just reading that. And now that that feeling has subsided, I desperately want some chili mac.

The internet is wrong. It closed in 1992, two weeks after I got to Austin. I probably ate there four times during those two weeks. I started eating there some time in the early 80s when my sister was at UT, and it was my first stop after I moved into the dorm.
  18. Every town has a nostalgic Tex-Mex spot where people who didn't basically grow up with it realize it's not really very good. But the people who grew up with it, or who just don't know any better, rave about it and usually talk about how good the margaritas are.

If I'm gauging your relocation to Austin right, I think Mad Dog and Beans was gone by the time you got there. So you get a pass on that one.
  20. In the theme of stuff my mid century mom taught me to cook, I present thee . . . Hamburger Chili Rice. It's solid!
  21. Can't seem to create something crazily-silly enough for this commie-Surly thread. Cause similes versus cultish snark, all I got is Cutty Sark.
