Season starts today at Barber.

O'Ward on pole, Jimmie Johnson in his "rookie season," and a full serving of RoGro to spice things up.

Also interested to see what Mclaughlin can do. The reigning Aussie Supercar champ. He hasn't seemed to get up to speed quite as fast as I thought he would with the IndyCar.

It’ll be interesting to see what Grosjean can do.

I am looking forward to the first time he and Sato fight for position or otherwise push each other into an opportunity for foolish bravado.

I hope everyone survives...

Typical Indy start. Lap 1 huge crash ruins the races of 6-8 people.

Jimmy Johnson was able to avoid the big crash but spins on his own and stalls the car a few laps later. Doesn't seem to have damage but will have to wait for a restart. Likely going to lose a lap at least.

I think he got started quick enough to stay on the lead lap but now he's at the back ofcourse.

He did end up a lap down.

OWard sliding all over but hanging on to the lead.

And in typical NBC fashion a lead change happens during commercial, and they can't mention it upon returning until Diffey reads a commercial and then reminds everyone all the names of the broadcasters.

Pretty good race, Congrats to Palou.

Too bad all the best action happened during side-by-side commercial so it was only on 40% of the screen with no audio.

NBC's motorsports coverage makes me angry at least once per race.

Every time I hear the name of Rinus VeeKay, my brain changes it to Peenus ReeKay and then I laugh to myself about it for five minutes.

Really wish IndyCar was going to be in Austin this year, would liked to have seen him race here.

i have mentioned fuck NBC's app yet?  cuz fuck NBC's app.  no idea when the race is supposed to start in this broadcast so fast forward a few minutes, get an apple ad, a geico ad, a jack daniels ad, a dunkin ad, a taco bell ad, an ikea ad and a honda ad, all unskippable, then get 5 seconds of scott dixon saying something then get the same  7 unskippable ads again 🤬

edit: got a countdown so fast forwarded to about that time and now i'm getting a double fucking helping of unskippable ads again 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

Yeah, NBC makes it real hard to enjoy IndyCar.

IndyCar has enough problems hanging on to the attention of motorsport fans, outside of the 500 it gets forgotten as a series even when the competition is pretty good.

But NBC can be brutal to watch.

FUCK nbc. The best thing that ever happened to F1 coverage in the U.S. was NBC losing the rights.

  • 2 weeks later...

Grosjean dominated the first half but once he had to go to primary tires he couldn't make them work very well and also had tons of traffic.

He's back on the good tires, but unless rain comes and makes things interesting in the final 10 laps it looks like Grosjean will only manage P2. Veekay has done a great job.

That was a fun race.

Disappointed for RoGro but happy for Peenus ReeKay - I like the way that kid drives.

indy 500 qualifying tomorrow.  with 10 minutes left in happy hour marcus ericsson is at the top of the board at 231.949, followed by herta, o'ward, rossi, and stefan wilson

This is why I love Indycar and not F1:

Lewis Hamilton says it would be impossible for someone like him to break into Formula 1 now, because the sport is a 'billionaire boys' club'

The seven-time World Championship winner also said that breaking into the sport nowadays from his working class background would be impossible. Of the sport's 20 current drivers, three - Lance Stroll, Nicholas Latifi, and Nikita Mazepin - are the sons of billionaires, while Max Verstappen and Mick Schumacher are both the sons of former F1 drivers.

Man I hope CBS takes over the contract and does a better job.

This qualifying "coverage" is like 80% split screen ads. They only cut back to full screen with commentary for the 4th lap and then right back to split screen.

Don't forget the channel change in the middle of everything that causes your DVR to cancel your season pass because it thinks that the second portion is a rerun.

Man Dalton Kellet has to be furious at his strategists right now.

Was in at 30th without having to go again tomorrow, they put him priority line and pulled his time anticipating getting bumped but then he was NOT bumped and then went slower and will now have to fight his way into the race tomorrow.

Will Power who was at 31 is the one who benefits and gets to avoid bump day.

Well now reading the recap on the website it seems Kellet didn't lose his first time. I was listening to the radio feed in the app so maybe they messed up which line he was in.

I don't know now.

Will himself didn't seem to really understand the situation, either. During the sliver of time that the fucktards in charge of programming at NBCSN left for interviews, he said something to the effect that you have to be a scientist to understand what's going on.

I had higher hopes for Simona - feel bad that it seems like her car is a bit of a dog.

Edited by Prepuce of Doom

Well Simona only has to beat 2 cars tomorrow and one of them is the Top Gun car which is even worse off.

Makes sense, but then the timing info shouldn't display times for anyone outside the 30. When you get bumped it should go blank.

Last row qualifying, five cars and only three make the race.

They've all gone once, and Enerson and Kimball are the two outside and in danger. Karam, Power, and De Silvestro are provisionally in the show.

Of course it isn't over yet.

Edited by Hawndoh

Enerson can't improve and likely has no time to go again. He will be out.

10ish min left for Kimball to try to pass De Silvestro but he needs to find a decent bit of speed to close the gap.

Kimball doesn't have enough. Simona De Silvestro survives and will be on row 11 along with Will Power and Sage Karam.

Dixon is an absolute machine. Just pips Herta to take pole.

An old guy and two youngsters on row 1

Dixon is awesome, and a good dude. One year my brother and I were planning on going to New Zealand and rent an RV and drive around for a couple weeks.  I had done a story on Dixon, as a driver for Chip, it was news in Pittsburgh.

I mentioned to Scott that we were thinking about that and he invited us to stay at his house for a couple days. Unfortunately the trip never occurred.

I didn't think anyone was going to top VeeKay's time - looked like that was a quantum leap beyond the rest of the field to that point, but Herta and Dixon really hauled the mail...

Ha. Username check out.

Carb day still had a bit of time to go, Dixon still looks good and the Penske cars seem to have found some speed they may have lacked during qualifying.

slightly off topic but also on topic, J.R. Hildebrand is scheduled to run an Indycar this year at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb

This is fucking beautiful.

Those old cars are so cool. Hardly more than a motor, four tires, and a steering wheel.

pre/game-race shows suck

you didn't enjoy the sucking off of healthcare workers?   haha

The 500 has the most drawn out pre race stuff every year.
