Tech just out recruited OU again by securing a commitment from 5* OT, Cooper Hackett. They were on him early and it seems to have paid off. The GM Is earning his money.

Dude committed DURING his OV to pig aggy, too. That must have been awkward.

Cody Campbell is an asshole who wants to leverage political influence into forcing the government to do for TT what it can’t do for itself. He wants schools with more media revenue than TT to collectively share with TT. He doesn’t want TT to collectively share revenue with schools that have less than TT.

Link? I'm not calling you a liar, I have a fair number of differences with Mr. Campbell. But I'm interested to know what his position is on that, I haven't seen anything that I cared to pay attention to.

Edit: others already beat me to it.

I've disagreed with Campbell plenty.  I respect that he puts his money where his mouth is.  Haven't seen any of this reported or quoted to Cody Campbell.  Share the link or STFU.

“STFU”? In the thread devoted to mocking and putting down TT? Ha-ha-ha-ha!

How about this for Mr. Campbell? TT worries about TT and Texas worries about Texas. Texas is doing fine in Olympic sports, and there is nothing to stop TT from fully funding theirs. They don’t need help from UT; they just need to manage their own resources.

Cody Campbell Asks Congress to Allow National College Sports TV Package

The ad will run during both ESPN and Fox college football pregame shows this weekend, the billionaire booster tells FOS, as well as “pretty much all of the games on Saturday.”

Aug 29, 2025 | 11:54 am
Saving College Sports

Billionaire Texas Tech booster and college sports lobbyist Cody Campbell has bought airtime for a new ad making the case that Congress can “save college sports” by changing the law and allowing one national college sports television package, rather than the piecemeal conference-specific deals of today.

In the ad, Campbell says the goal is to earn more revenue in order to fund women’s and Olympic sports. He told Front Office Sports that it will air during college football games this weekend on the very networks targeted by his pitch: ESPN and Fox. (The two networks have shelled out billions in media rights for the SEC and the Big Ten, as well as the ACC, Big 12, and others.)

Campbell purchased spots to air the ad during both Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff and ESPN’s College GameDay, as well as “pretty much all of the games on Saturday,” he told FOS.

Campbell, a former Texas Tech football player who made his fortune in the oil and natural gas industry, previously told FOS took an interest in college sports policy after his involvement in The Matador Club, Texas Tech’s powerhouse NIL (name, image, and likeness) collective. Campbell is also close to President Donald Trump through the America First Policy Institute and has been advising the administration on college sports policy issues.

Campbell launched a 501(c)(4) organization called “Saving College Sports” earlier this year. Self-funded by Campbell, Saving College Sports paid for the ad and has already spent six figures in congressional lobbying. The organization has a full-time staff, led by executive director David Polyansky, a Republican strategist and former chief of staff for Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) who chairs the Senate Commerce Committee and has been heavily involved in Senate debates on college sports.

The new ad opens with Campbell walking on a field holding a football. “Dramatic changes are causing nearly every athletic department to operate in the red, forcing cuts, putting women’s sports and Olympic dreams in immediate danger,” he says.

The ad says that the solution is for Congress to change the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961. The law gave professional sports leagues an antitrust exemption to pool their media rights and sell them as one bundle, rather than piecemeal by team or division.

An amendment to the Sports Broadcasting Act would overrule a 1984 Supreme Court decision that found NCAA had an illegal monopoly over television rights, effectively giving schools and conferences the power that has led them to sell  billion-dollar packages and constantly realign conferences. (The NCAA now only owns championship media rights, like men’s and women’s March Madness.)

Campbell believes that the money generated by one football TV deal—illegal under current law—would be worth even more than the billions of all the conference deals put together. In his ideal world, the deals would be struck with a new organization called the United States Collegiate Athletics Corporation, which would then send money back to schools to fund sports purportedly endangered by the costs of modern college sports.

There is currently one bill ready to be introduced to the House floor for a vote, but the SCORE ACT is mostly concerned with NCAA priorities like blocking athletes from becoming employees. Though Campbell supports that goal, his changes to the Sports Broadcasting Act are not included in the bill—yet.

As for whether he intends to run more ads on college football Saturdays this season, Campbell says: “We definitely will.”

Cody Campbell is an ex Tech player, chairman of the BoR, main financer of Tech NIL. He says he wants to save college sports and his big idea is that media revenue should be pooled and shared.

Im sure he thinks that. Without his donations, Tech is another Iowa State. Making that $20.5M nut is a lot easier if you’re getting that sweet B1G or SEC revenue. Sharing media revenue ales it harder for the big ‘uns and easier for the small ‘uns.

Unsurprisingly, as a Texas fan, I think that’s a shitty idea.

I suppose I'm mostly going to reserve judgment until I see some details. Neither the ad nor the website seems to offer anything substantive beyond mere platitudes.

Not going to go CR here, but...while I like what Campbell has done for Tech, specifically (with regard to NIL etc.), I'm skeptical of his ability to do anything meaningful or good in the political arena. Given what I personally know about all the stupid fucking shit he believes and stuff like the dipshit he's pushing for Tech chancellor right now, I would be very hesitant to support any legislation he is pushing.

Neuheisel is on XM 84 regularly pushing the same vague agenda as what Campbell appears to be doing, and that's unifying the conferences as one entity to negotiate contracts on their behalf with the content platforms, among other things. One would have to be a naive fool to see that as anything other than creating a uniform market cap across the conferences and programs. It is the same shit as always - Texas Tech and others wanting to coattail the bigger guys without bringing much of anything to the table.

My issue when Tech and its people in the state legislature or rubes like this brotoxxed clown start trying to dig into other schools' pockets, usually Texas' pockets, is that you guys truly do not actually bring anything to the table. I can't think of a single redeeming thing about the athletic program at Tech that would soften my view of that bullshit.

You guys have never won in anything of significance. I follow any of the college sports in which UT participates, so I know you've won at T&F a few times and you have that WBB title from the 90's, but none of that does it for the regular fan.

Your academics are unmitigated trash.

You don't have a talent base that others could plunder by associating with Tech.

No TV eyeballs. Small fanbase. Mediocre brand.

Like, show me something to offset the view that Campbell is just another Tech shitheel trying to bring everyone not named Tech back to Tech's bottom-feeder level.

Boy, that’s a pretty cynical take.

The powers that be have done a bang-up job of running college football to date.  It would be insane to take a different tack on things.

Not saying I agree or disagree with Campbell or Neuheisel. I do get a kick out of the blind criticism though. "You're doing things that fit your interests!  By golly, do it our way.  It's more better!!!"

I have no beef with things. Do you? Why?

Campbell used his own money to get TT the B12’s best roster. Problem is- this is only sustainable if he pays the same amount every year going forward. He’s hoping someone will “equalize” things so he doesn’t have to give eight figures every year to keep Texas Tech in the game.

He’s not going to say, “Iwant media revenue shared, so I won’t have to give so much every year”. Instead he says, “Will no one think of the children (that play Olympic sports)?”

What is incorrect or dated about what I said? Have you guys rocketed up the academic rankings and I missed it? Did a bevy of football talent move to greater Lubbock? Have you won a fucking thing lately? Lots of eyeballs and fans springing up suddenly? No.

This is exactly what Cody Campbell is shouting to anyone who will listen. Your ability to stumble into accidental points that favor another poster's POV is almost surreal.

This doesn't make sense for a few reasons:

  1. That's an extremely reductive take, you'd have to be a fool to believe this initiative is on the back of Cody Campbell's personal bank account. It's hardly just him, he's just taken it upon himself to be the frontman and, as a result, is the most visible driver of our NIL program. Besides, he's a billionaire, he has the infinite money glitch, he'll be fine.
  2. It's like I said before, the money isn't a finite well that's going to dry up. We didn't just stumble across a treasure chest full of money in the desert that's going to run out in a couple years, it's an absurd notion.
  3. Obviously sustainability is part of the equation. Think about it from a Texas perspective. Do you think Texas is dropping the bag now and is going to stop doing so later? Does that make any sense to you? Why would we do that if a school like Texas wouldn't?

Maybe he is.  We'll see.

It's more the notion that anyone gives a shit about academic rankings, especially the overwhelming majority of college football players. That was a take you'd see often on TexAgs back in the day, and it was stupid back then, too. You think Arch Manning or Colin Simmons or their agents give a flying fuck about Texas' academic rankings? It's an outright comical notion. Nobody fucking cares.

Your take is entirely (and understandably, since you're a Texas fan) biased and parts are certainly dated/incorrect like what I mentioned above, the notion that we need "Texas' money" to survive, or the notion that we have a small fan base.

The TV eyeballs/brand/winning shit is of course true, but that's what we're trying to change. Again, your issue is that we're trying. Your perspective is that we should just not try. It's completely illogical and a non-starter in any serious conversation.

My issue? I stated it. You guys are always trying to keep Texas attached to you or aiding you in some form. The very loudmouth we're discussing here, Campbell, was publicly bawling as Texas left for the SEC because Texas wasn't interested in committing to a Tech home and home for 20 years like he'd been claiming.

I don't give a shit that Tech is "trying" to compete. I don't even understand that argument. Competition is the fun in college sports, or a big part of it.

Your issue? It might be reading comprehension.

I wasn't referencing the academics as something in regard to athletes. I kind of follow recruiting a little. Only for like the last 35 years. I think I figured out that academics didn't mean a whole to many recruits in roughly 1992.

I was referring to academics in the form of "I can never really find anything to help me align with Tech in any form as they're constantly trying to yoke themselves to my alma mater. "

I also never said that Tech needed Texas money to survive. Campbell is one of the folks implying that risk, however. He's publicly stating that college sports is broken and in need of fixing, largely because of the financial issues across the land. He's not an altruist. He's not arguing that for Austin Peay or Tarleton State's sake. If you believe otherwise, I guess say so, and I'll leave you alone as I don't enjoy conversing with naive fools.

I haven't seen anyone take issue with Tech "trying", assuming you mean Cody's footing a big payroll to be competitive in today's world. The only trying anyone is taking issue with is trying to level the playing field by singularizing media rights so that all schools - regardless of what they bring to the table - get the same share.

That is precisely what coattailing looks like.

You could argue that Tech diminishes the brand of blue bloods. The Red Raiders having a seat at any table other than the kids table is like the English Premiere league inviting an MLS team to come fart all over their pristine product.

You're not going to get any argument from me that Cody Campbell is a loudmouth donkey. I vacillate often between appreciating what he's done for our NIL efforts, and wishing he'd shut the fuck up because he's not half as smart as he thinks he is. I have dealt with him personally before; I am well aware of what he's like. I'm just as skeptical as you are that any of his efforts beyond the Tech sphere will have any positive impact on sports as a whole.

I guess there are a few things that cause me to not loathe Tech as much as some other in-state and rival schools. You guys could always rile up your rival, Texas 8&4, better than anyone when y'all won. I always enjoyed that. And, you're also not allowing a rape factory to be run inside the AD in order attempt to win shit. So you're also not Baylor. And even though your academics are on a level that would make a Neanderthal cavewoman cry, so are OU's and at least y'all are Texan.

So you have that going for you, which is nice.

To be fair, I didn't like Tech (except the band) growing up because I grew up an hour south of their campus and Tech bullshit was shoved down my throat my entire childhood.  I begrudgingly became a mini-Tech fan because of Leach, and then was proven that I was right to hate Tech with the way they fucked him over.  Until they apologize for that, Tech doesn't really deserve any respect.  They'll drum up excuses to fire someone to avoid paying them a well earned bonus and then hide behind state immunity to avoid the consequences.  Fuck them with whatever is the most uncomfortable and least fun for them possible.
