I like Quinn, and don't doubt your impressions of him as a person.  And having met you in person, you're in damn good shape for 65, and am actually surprised at that age.

But, I think Sam Ehlinger has been our best QB since Colt.  Yes, Quinn has him on a conference title.  But Quinn has better talent and coaching around him than Sam ever had, by a mile.  And I think Sam is a better overall passer, more of a dual threat with a much better pocket presence, and showed a bit more orders of magnitude greater fire and mental toughness than Quinn.

I'm not bashing Quinn at all.  I'm rooting my ass for him these next two games (and hopefully beyond this season).  Just responding to your first assertion.

FIFY. Not bashing Quinn either but it's simply not debatable.

I guess you deal in absolutes, sith horn. I think it's highly debatable, in favor of Quinn, and that you'll have to face it by mid December.

Feel like I could argue both sides of this. They are both squarely in that second tier of Texas QBs all time.

Quinn in no way, shape or form has greater fire and mental toughness than Sam. It is laughable to suggest otherwise. You can argue what I didn't claim, that he's a better passer when he isn't wilting under pressure. There's no doubt he is blessed with greater arm talent and has a higher ceiling. But to claim he has more moxy, fire or mental toughness? Those qualities oozed from Sam's pores.

Hopefully Quinn is working his way back into that zone where he just focuses and plays with confidence. When he's there, our offense is virtually unstoppable. I hope he gets his mojo back and will rejoice as much as any longhorn when he does.

Maybe I have a recency bias because of our frustrations with Quinn as of late, but I'm making a distinction between a better overall passer (Sam) and a better arm (Quinn).  Yeah, when Quinn is "on," he makes some throws we never saw from Sam.  But I think when comparing their college careers at this point, Sam proved to be a more reliable passer than Quinn has.

And whether you disagree with my better overall passer assessment, the sum of my opinion was that Sam is our best QB since Colt, responding to TreatyOak's specific statement, which includes passing, pocket presence, leadership, durability, running ability, etc.

Sam was never a great passer and definitely had his limitations but he was very consistent. Quinn is definitely a more naturally talented passer and his highs are much higher than Sam's were but his lows are definitely massively lower. Quinn has been a roller coaster every year while Sam was a fucking rock.

Regarding the best QB since Colt, it's definitely Sam Ehlinger. Sam was consistent and when necessary would go into turbo mode to carry the team to victory and didn't struggle with the slumps.

I see we're still bickering over Quinn. Is there a stopping point, cause you're just going in circles.

Bitch to bitch is fine, but got damn, y'all really in your feelings right now. He is who he is. He's not going superman, he'll throw 2 TD's at most and let the defense beat the shit out of the opponents offense and we walk away victorious. This has heen done all season outside of 2 games against inferior opponents, which one of them hurt his supposed "abs" he had been working on.

I think you’re looking at team success and attributing that to Quinn. I don’t hate Quinn, he’s definitely not my type of player in the way he’s introverted and cold. Where Sam was a warrior that would die on the field. Sam played in 46/50 games, undefeated 4-0 postseason record.

Tale of the tape (best individual season)

2019 Sam Ehlinger JR. 8-5

  • 296/454 65% 3,663 Yds 32 TDs 10 Ints
  • 663 Rushing Yds 7 TDs
  • Best individual performance: vs #1 LSU 31/47 401 yds 4TD/0int 60 rush yds 1 TD
  • 67th ranked defense
  • 4,326 yds 39 TDs total production

2023 Quinn Ewers Soph. 12-2

  • 272/394 69% 3,479 Yds 22 TDs 6 Ints
  • 75 Rushing Yds 5 TDs
  • Best individual performance: at #4 Alabama 24/38 349 Yds 3TD/0int 11 rush yds
  • 15th Ranked defense
  • 3,554 yds 27 TDs total production

yes, Quinn has more arm talent. But durability and production isn’t on the same planet as Sam.

I would never suggest Quinn has more fire or toughness than Sam, who was special in that way. I totally loved Sam as a UT QB, I only think Quinn is better. And I think the numbers will make it clearl by year’s end.

Well it’s not mathematically possible for his statistics to eclipse Sam. Unfortunately I don’t see Quinn with a 460+ yard game left in him. This team is undefeated without Quinn dating back to last year (3-0). Quinn would need to win everything from here just to tie Sam in wins (35)

Actually, I lied. I keep forgetting Quinn has missed multiple games from 2022-2024. He’s currently at 23 wins total. So again it isn’t mathematically possible for him to catch Sam in wins.

Ironically, from 2022-2024 Texas is undefeated in games Quinn doesn’t play in (5-0).

Also, records through first 30 games:

Quinn 23-7

Sam 20-10

Wins generally speaking is a team stat.  There’s no debate that Sam had a less talented team.

Sam was asked to carry his team in a manner you will likely never see again.  The mental and physical endurance it required of him was incredible.  It’s unfortunate that his last year was a cluster in multiple respects.

Why are y'all talking about gross statistics?  Sam played in 50% more games than Quinn has.

Both are Longhorns.  Loved Sam.  Hoping for a final boost for Quinn.  That said, Quinn has the higher QB Rating (for whatever that's worth) -- 149.7 to 145.

I think it’s fair to say Ehlinger and Ewers are close in terms of “overall college QB” to date. I think saying Ehlinger is clearly the better QB of the two is nonsense.

Good call. I mathed wrong. I saw Quinn had 6 wins in 2022 so just forgot a game. The only reason I brought it up was to illustrate how dumb it is to attribute W/L to one player.

I don't have a dog in this hunt, I rooted for both guys, but statisticall (QB Rating) Quinn is currently ahead of Sam (149.7 vs 145.0).

Cue the "QB rating is stupid" responses, and it may very well be, but if we're talking statistics, it's really stupid to look at cumulative career numbers given the radically different # games played.

You can drill it down however you want and Sam still clears. Passing yards in a game, passing yards in a season, TDs in game, TDs in a season. When you add in the rushing yds/tds it’s not close at all.

1. His hips are rotated incorrectly. He was clearly looking at Helm (2)

2. Helm was super covered. But if his hips were rotated correctly he could have easily hit the crossing route (3).

3. This is a touchdown with a good pass. Instead it’s a sack.

I have the exact same thoughts, but in the opposite direction. Some act like it’s Quinn in a landslide because of the 12-2 playoff season. Which is why I’m giving context to Sam at Texas.

Here are two big ones that tell the story.

Quinn Ewers Defense rankings as a starter

2022  - 28th

2023 - 15th

2024 - 1st

1,000 yard runners: two, Bijan 1,580 - 2022 & Jonathon Brooks 1,139 - 2023

Sam Ehlinger Defense rankings as a starter

2017 - 30th

2018 - 58th

2019 - 67th

2020 - 61st

1,000 yard runners: None in 4 years

Sam Ehlinger would have ripped that pass rusher's neck off and then trucked #10 for a first down.

Member that time WVU dropped 10 on 3rd and 10 and Sam run ran for a 1st?    Pretty awesome.

To date, as best I can tell Ewers has never started and won a game in which the opponent scored more than 27.  Malik Murphy did it in 2 starts at 30 points.  Nevermind some of that was his doing.

In 2020 alone, Sam won 3 in which the opponent scored 30+ points.  Lost 1 in which the opponent scored 30+ (uh we fumbled on the 1).  Lost one in which we scored 40.  Several of these were OT but still.

In 2019, he won 3 in which the opponent scored more than 30+, one was 48.  He lost 3 in which the opponent scored 30 including 1 in which they scored 40+.

2018 was more of the same.  Beat OU then got a screw job in the championship game.

He had two wins in regulation in which our opponents scored 45+ points.  Lost at least 1 in which we scored 40 in regulation.

So you mistook my original FIFY of South Austin's quote to include his entire statement or everything about Sam. I guess I could have been less ambiguous by isolating that portion of the quote initially, but figured the strike-through and italics were sufficiently clear what I was emphasizing. It's what stood out to me when I first read it. The book on Quinn isn't totally written yet. We've seen him play great before. He needs to find his way back to that version of himself.

Maybe Ewers is better than Ehlinger when the pass protection is perfect (like in practice) but my measure of QB is to perform when things aren't perfect. The toughness, escapability, and improv is where guys stand out and where Sam is leagues better so far.

I get that and I'm not saying it is fair but it is what it is. Tom Brady is the GOAT in the NFL, why, because he won. Before him, Joe Montana, why, because he won. It isn't fair but it is true.

I feel like we’re having some revisionist history on Sam. I loved Sam. He was a great leader and a great Longhorn that bled burnt orange. His battering ram nature had the offense playing at a higher level than without it with a swagger we needed.

That said, comparing Sam’s and Quinn’s 2nd and 3rd year stats does not convey Sam was a more consistent passer. Quinn has greatly benefitted from having a better roster around him resulting in more wins on his down games than Sam, but I feel pretty strongly the stats don’t say Sam was a more consistent passer.

Here’s where I get confused.  It seems we have different definitions of talent.  I generally think “physical” traits as others use the term talent.  Yes, Ewers has a stronger, more lively arm than Sam.  Hell, he may even be faster than Sam.  In college, you just need QBs to make plays however they come.  Interestingly enough, Ewers has a livelier, stronger arm than Vince Young.  Anyone here going to call him more talented?  Sam has more attributes closer to Young than Ewers does to Young.

Traditional passing stats are good, but they’re very limited relative to what you have today.  If you wish to compare completion percentage, that’s fairly useless.  For example Ewers has thrown 32% and 27% of his passes behind the LOS the past two years.  Sam never threw more than 20% (be mindful Sark is more a screen guy than Herman).  In their careers those completion %s in that range are from 91-95%.  Quick math on the 32% gives you around 10% higher completion percentage in total before you even get to the other depths.

Even if we talk win percentage, is it not equal or higher in non-Quinn starts  than Quinn starts the past 3 years?

All of the discussion requires context.  The simple answer based on numbers is simply that.  The simple answer.

I know I have said this exact same thing multiple times in this thread. Pretty sure I'm not the only one. I will say it again. Quinn is the starter until he leaves or gets hurt. If he isn't we are fucked because he had a Chris Simms big 12 championship type meltdown. I'm glad someone finally made you see the light.
