2023 - 2024 Dallas Mavericks Season Thread - I'm watching, just like you guys

Couldn't ask for a better start to this series. Won a game on the road to immediately snatch back HCA in a game where we only made six 3's and Minnesota went crazy beyond 3. Going to be a fun ride as this series has the makings of going the distance.

Bro we can’t help you if you haven’t moved beyond the eye test and fg% to evaluate how effective a player is on the court.

Lively’s net rating so far in the playoffs is +16. Gafford’s is -10.3.

Since I know you have no idea what net rating means I’ll paste the definition here for you:

Net rating is the offensive rating minus the defensive rating, but simply put it can be defined as how much better or worse the team is when a specific player is on the court. These ratings are usually on a per X possessions basis. Using possessions rather than minutes eliminates the effects of a team that plays very fast or very slow.

Uh, yes. Y’all need to stop looking up random obscure metrics, stop bitching about refs in every contest (of every Dallas or Longhorn sport), and realize you don’t know basketball nearly as well as you think you do.

The difference between Gafford and Lively offensively is greater than the difference between them defensively. Gafford is better O, and Lively is better D. Gafford is the better player. Lively has had a better playoffs and has more upside, maybe, but will likely never be as talented as DG offensively.

FTs were huge last night for the Mavs. It’s been a lingering issue all season, and cost us a playoff game already, but last night we went 16/17. Went a long way toward offsetting the off shooting night from 3.

They were 36.7% by the end. Not that crazy.

True. Didn't realize they fell off that sharply. They were hitting everything early. But they still made 12 more than us and 12% better and still lost. Ours were more timely.

And it helped we were damn near perfect from the FT line.

Nice piece.

And the moment he sees a coverage he doesn’t like, he’s more than willing to wipe it away with the dismissive flick of a wrist. In crunch time, when Lively turned the ball over on a travel after Doncic was blitzed, Wonder Boy turned Chess Master and waved off the screen on the next play, going mano a mano with Jaden McDaniels, nailing a stepback 2, and capping off a 15-point fourth quarter with split-second tactical wizardry that Edwards is just starting to grasp.

Lively is better defensively than Gafford and much better when catching the ball on the move and making quick decisions on whether to shoot or who to pass to, however Gafford is more consistent when finishing shots around the basket that aren't dunks or easy layups. I'm glad we have them both.

Great game last night.   So huge to get a win on a night where the outside shots weren't falling.  It will be interesting to see how MN adjusts defensively after getting destroyed in the paint.  I've got a feeling we'll need to make more 3's the next game (with plenty of great looks) so hopefully got that poor shooting night out of the system.

Sorry. Kind of. When THJ comes on the court, he must bring instant scoring. If he doesn’t and/or his shot isn’t there, he needs to only play about 5 minutes per half.

Mostly agree but Gafford doesn’t need to pass because he’s dunking or decisively taking a shot inside 5 feet. Do you know why Lively might (might) have better passing skills?  Because Gafford is hands down a better scorer. Better hands. Softer touch. Thicker body. Flusher dunks.

What is bolded is key, though, and the way the resident ref whiners on this board talk about him is that Gafford is inferior to Lively. He’s not.

I'm not gonna die on this hill because THJ doesn't really matter much in the big picture but  10 minutes, 4 rebounds, 1 steal and 0 shots is fine with me.  we don't need THJ shooting so we/he can figure out if his shot is or isn't there.

THJ is a minutes eater(10-12 is a good number) to keep other guys fresh. We beat the #3 seed in their building with THJ taking zero shots.

You’re looking only at the big picture, which, long-term I agree with because I don’t think he’ll be on the team for long. Hes under contract through next season I believe at $18.75mm per year. His presence stunts the growth of Green and Hardy. His game drives me nuts and I want him gone too.  And since he’s averaged 5.1 ppg in the playoffs while we’ve gone 9-5 against top competition, I’m not gonna die on the hill either.

But, despite the drop-off post-trade, he’s still the third leading scorer on the team. And what can he do?  He can a) eat minutes as you say, giving DJJ, PJ, or Luka/Kai much needed rest; and b) score in bunches. This is crucial when we are 7 wins away from a title, particularly on a night when PJ and DJJ gave us little and Josh Green was a major negative.  All 3 shot poorly. When THJ is in, he needs to attempt shots to see if his good streak can get 10-15 points. This is crucial, because we were lucky the Wolves got cold and we escaped with a win, without much help for our 2 stars, and everyone else shooting poorly, particularly from 3.

This is EXACTLY where THJ can help NOW.  I’m not talking about next year or whenever he’s ultimately off the team - I’m talking about NOW, where we are dangerously thin and WILL need his scoring in some games.

You have to think about things situationly. Take for instance the times when Luka or Kyrie are blitzed in the backcourt. I'm much more confident in Lively's decision making and execution receiving a pass 20 feet away from the basket than Gafford's. And they're going to blitz the hell out of both Kyrie and Luka in the upcoming games now that they realize that their drop coverage is going to get destroyed by them.

I do think about things situationally. That’s a good point but a minor deal in the scheme of things. What is a bigger deal is Gafford’s relative sure handedness on completing layups and dunks.  The tone of the board seems to be anti-Gafford and pro-Lively. I don’t get it.

That's not really a great example of Ant playing poor defense. Kyrie received the ball in transition with Ant trailing him by 10 feet.

There are like 3 or 4 more clips in the video.

I do think the Wolves are going to come out hot tonight. We're going to need to keep it close and go for the haymaker at the end. Very interested to see how they adjust on defense.

My daughter graduates tonight. 1800 kids in her class, so it should be over quick.
What school? I graduated Plano Sr class of 2000 and we had the largest class ever at the time, 1600 kids.

WTF are you talking about. It went off two wolves players. Even the announcers said it was clearly Dallas ball.
