San Antonio Spurs 2024-25 - Taking it in the pooper for Cooper

I don't know much about trades and NBA salary economics, but with the Spurs as the new destination franchise, I see it playing out like this:

Just before the draft, Flagg refuses to play in Dallas.

A three way trade sends Lively and AD to Phoenix. We give Phoenix our #14. Spurs get Durant. Dallas gets Suns 2045 2nd rounder, Vassell, and a subscription to the Churro of the Month club for the #1 pick to SA.

Nico reminds irate fans that "it's the gift that keeps on giving."

I always say this to Spurs fans who insist that his jersey be retired; it will be the first jersey retirement ceremony where the people in attendance actively boo (and loudly) the honoree.

It should be a surprise jersey burning ceremony.

I need the KD to SA talk (mostly clickbait) to go away

Why?  It's a very real possibility, it's simply about the price.  I have a feeling another team may end up giving a pricier offer, but if we can swing a 3 way deal and only give up Barnes, Keldon and stuff along with maybe a first and swap then it could be a great get.  We shouldn't be giving away the 2nd pick unless we can get a star in their prime.

Former Spur David Greenwood recently passed away.

Nice guy. Greenwood was neighbors with one of my friends in high school and used to give us his tickets every now and then. RIP.

I would guess they're offering more and that's fine but even Shams was forced to admit that his reporting doesn't include what KD wants, which is crucial since he's on an expiring deal.  Shams used to get all of information via agents, so this sounds like through a competitive agency he's hearing this.  Again, I don't think the Spurs will be the place because it would require KD basically pushing to come here and without Pop as coach, I don't think he will make it get messy.  Maybe I'm wrong, but it feels like the only way he ends up in SA, which is fine.  It just means we may end up with a really young squad and better next year but not ready to really compete for championship, maybe a playoff berth.

what kind of  an idiot wouldn't want kd

He's post-prime and I don't want him taking oxygen from the young core we're building, but I'd be willing to bring him on as a vet min journeyman mentor ala Chris Paul so long as we're not giving anything up for it.

He averaged 26 pts a game on 52% shooting, he would solve our wing problems

Reportedly the Spurs were his top choice, we almost traded for him at the deadline

What about showing them how to play basketball?

Fine with that, but the pricetag needs to reflect that job description. If he wants more and his agent is trying to get him the most $$, then there was never going to be a deal that made sense for the Spurs

I get it.... but he would have to push for SA.  Tell Phoenix and all other teams that's where he wants to be and won't entertain an extension, even if traded there, until he becomes a UFA.  It seems we're not willing to put either Vassell or Sochan or both in the deal and Phoenix also wants a center, which we don't have.

He's still very good, but he won't be as good next year and the dropoff will be pretty fast. Not worth the price of admission.

He'd still be the 2nd best player on the team next year.  Probably the best in the playoffs......

Apparently Phoenix was wanting either Castle or the #2 for KD. In case anyone was wondering whether that front office was still delusional or not.

Frankly, while they have leverage, this isn't a crazy ask.  Multiple suitors on the board, KD doesn't seem to want to leverage them right now, so while they know we'll probably say no, we know they'll get a better offer than Vassell and stuff.  If KD is interested in winning another ship, he absolutely should be telling Phoenix and other teams where he wants to go and that he won't sign an extension with certain teams.  This would reduce the package needed to trade for him and leave the acquiring team with a better roster.  He's only hurting his chances by staying out of it....

I want nothing to do with KD. I’d much rather build through the draft and have a young core that can contend for 10 years.

I’d love to add KD to the team, but not at any substantial cost. He’s not going to move the championship needle on this team, and dude is in the downside of a great career. They’d make the playoffs though, provided he stays healthy. Dude needs to go to a team where he’s the second to third option on offense and has to carry zero load on defense. I hope he gets that.

We are doing that either way.

Adding KD would be a nice way to dump a couple contracts of someone dispensable like DV or KJ or both. But I wouldn't want to give him a max extension. If he's cool with like 2 for 60ish and you don't have to give up too many picks or even someone like Sochan I think you pull the trigger.

I don’t want to lose Sochan. Not even for Durant. I have fallen for the off-season shooting videos.

The Bane trade package makes me not want to even try the KD trade market. 4 FRPs, a swap, and two contributing players? I can hope that the suns realize he's 37 and entering his twilight, but obvs they'll try to say he's worth more than Bane....... No thanks.

That's not really how that works. Bane is under contract for next season and 3 more after that at a pretty good price. KD is on an expiring. Phoenix has to trade him - they don't really get to name their price in the same way. The best they can do is get teams bidding against each other, but the Spurs/Heat/Rockets are all smart FOs that are going to be more than willing to wait Phoenix out. Even Minny is a pretty well run team.

Also - Memphis didn't really get any players back worth a shit - which is why it was a little pick heavy. KCP is on the wrong side of 30 and Cole Anthony is a guy that's basically unplayable in a playoff series.

Devin Vassell, for example, is a much better asset than either of those guys and worth a first rounder or two just by himself. I mean shit I'd probably rather have KJ's contract than KCP's. Not that I'd want to pay $20M for either of them.

Here's the thing..... Sochan will never be anywhere as good as KD, even a 37 year old KD.  His upside is really good glue and energy guy with some defensive stopper side to him.  Like a bankrupt Draymond Green.  The advantage to keeping him is if his mindset is right (and thus far it hasn't been) is he won't need many shots or USG and his price.  But right now, Jeremy Sochan isn't a very good player.  He's a good talent and we all hope he takes the next step forward but he doesn't do anything well.  He doesn't rebound enough or play on the ball defense enough to reach to good levels.  He shot better this year but he's still a dismal 3 point shooter.  Doesn't block shots or control the paint.  Doesn't create extra possessions by causing turnovers or stealing the ball.  Basically, he's just potential and it feels like the Spurs haven't really known what to do with him.  I think it's easy..... Rodman with a 3 point shot should be the goal.  He'll never be that good on the defensive end or on the boards, but that should be the goal and he's not really in the same state yet, so let's not mention neighborhood.

So, while I get it, let's try not to suffer too much from foundation bias.  It happens to me too, so again, I totally understand but there is a real possibility that 6 or 7 years of Sochan never delivers as much VORP or WS as 3 years of KD at this age.  But it's the money, man..... it's the money.  KD takes up so much room that your either can't give up as much as Phoenix apparently wants or his extension would have to be a self-aware hometown discount.  Something around 2 for 70m or something.  You basically give KD 65 games during the reg season and pray he's healthy and has his legs for a deep playoff run.

Again, all of that said, I think we get outbid by quite a bit.

What am I missing re: Durant?  Wasn’t Phoenix better before he got there?

His teams were swept in the first round in 2022, swept in the first round in 2023, swept in the first round in 2024, and missed the playoffs entirely in 2025.  Yet he’s supposed to come here and teach our young guys how to win?

I’m not in love with Vassell’s or Sochan’s games, but they seem to be held in fairly high regard in NBA circles.  I’m fine with trading them, but bring back a dude who’ll contribute to a real playoff run.
