I am a certified ref, although I only ref about 15-20 games a year. The handball rule is one of the most subjective rules of the game. I ref lots of 7v7 games because I spend many hours as a volunteer and coach at that age group so I tend to migrate there as a ref, and the number of parents that go apoplectic anytime a handball isn't called makes me laugh. One time I stopped the game when parents were going apeshit and asked if any of them could tell me what the handball rules were, and if the answer was "the ball hits their hand", they were wrong.  Crickets.

I actually agreed the Mexico handball wasn't a penalty. You are allowed to brace yourself when you fall.

You are allowed to use one hand to stop the ball as long as you commit to falling while you do.

Here's The Athletic's guess at the 26-man WC roster as of today. They didn't do a starting lineup or put them in order.

  • GK: Turner, Steffen, Schulte
  • DF: Dest, Jedi, Richards, Ream, McKenzie, Freeman, Scally, Zimmerman
  • MF: Adams, McKennie, Musah, Tillman, Cardoso, Berhalter, LDLT, Tessman
  • FW: Puli, Weah, Balogun, Wright, Luna, Pepi, Sargent

Not a ton to argue with. GK suuuuuucks. No depth at FB and no 2nd CB you feel good about. I think LDLT is a waste of space, but it's not like he'll be playing a lot so whatever.

freese is going to be on the roster as the #2 or #3 doesn't matter but this is a tournament where kicks happen and he is obviously a pk ninja

Why the hell would Turner agree to go anywhere he isn’t going to get playing time? Is this dude serious about making the World Cup?

I actually really like the guy. I’ve listened to him on a lot of podcasts and stuff and he seems like a genuinely good guy. Great story.

But, #1) he’s not very good, and #2) every career choice he makes is baffling. It’s a tough indictment of the rest of our pool that the guy is anywhere near the #1 spot.

I mean, he took his shot at the premier league and at a massive club. I don’t fault him for that. But everything after that has not worked out and it never seemed like it was going to workout.

He really doesn’t have much bargaining power. Teams want to move him, he kind of has to take the terms and the move. His situations aren’t great and he has to get out.

i think the Arsenal move was more the Revs taking a good deal. But I think it was @Hagbard Celine that said sometimes the big club transfer money isn’t the best move for the player, the club or the league. Sure you get money and a big club. But if it doesn’t work out, the player is stunted. And both the club and league look like not great farm systems churning out duds.

How is he with City?

Didn’t he show promise, but wasn’t good enough to feature regularly for Philly?

Damn, he is tiny.

Lots of news with our boys trying to make Transfers.

Weah - his move to Olympique de Marseille was blocked buy Juve over money. They want more money.

Sargent - blocked a move from Norwich City to Wolfsburg, because ... ???

Reyna - his transfer to Parma is stuck on money, Dortmund wants more. Parma might have a lot more need for him, so they might come to meet these numbers.

Thoughts?

Except that NE is trash and the fans seem ready to lynch Porter and Kraft.

I don't really care as long as he's playing. Playing for a trash team might actually be good for him since he'll be needing to block a lot of shots.

Mercury is retrograde until August 10th-11th. Maybe things clear up for the better after that.

Crystal Palace Legend!

Uh - it's a shield.

Jk. That's an impressive win.

I wish he was as good of a player.

If he had come to the MLS and played as a striker all the time, he would probably be pretty decent at the position, because he definitely showed flashes over the years.

For the USMNT he has mainly been pure speed down the right side and usually has been a B+ or better contributor, but for his clubs, they have never known what to do with him.

Isn't he going to be a rb at marseille.

We’ll have the most right backs on a world cup team with Adams, Weah, McKennie, Richards and Dest. Add Scally or Freeman if Jedi is still hurt and Dest moves to the left.

That crap from Taylor is exactly the click bait BS the current players are calling out.  It's just full of speculative opinions about effort and desire.  He then suggests somehow we've regressed from the 2014 WC.

2014 WC

Advanced out of Group Stage with 4 points then got knocked out by Belgium next game.

2022 WC

Advanced out of Group Stage with 4 points then got knocked out by Netherlands next game.

I've never liked him and I'm not sure what he's freaking out about. We just had a pretty good window.

Also - it's absolutely ridiculous how many games these guys are asked to play now. Pulisic played 54 fucking games from July 1st 2024 to May 24th 2025 and started 46 of them. Twellman in his 10 year career played 240 games total.

He addresses this.

HOWEVER, as a fan I would note that 2022 team:

A. totally missed out on the 2018 World Cup

B. Were totally over matched by the Netherlands in that game in 2022. Granted, that's more on the coach than the team, but they were.

This is addressed too. I'll say this, the video should be watched in the entirety. That clip is OK, but the whole clip really hits most of the points and if you disagree, please retort.

Because these are not hard things to squash, yet team CP10 and others have not, INCLUDING USSF.

The 2018 WC miss was because we lost to T&T 2-1 in the final match.  Our lone goal scorer in that match, Pulisic.

Below is a list of those who played in that game.  I don't think the 2018 failure had much to do with the 2022 roster.  I do see a lot of that heralded 2014 roster below.
