I am shocked that Espada ran Hader into the ground.

48 appearances and 52 innings pitched?

Also, how many times this year have we pitched Hader and Abreu with a 4 run lead because they have decided that it’s essentially the same as 3 runs?

Yeah, that’s Hector Neris territory there.

What's Ryan Pressly doing these days?

We already have one Neris.  We don't need a 2nd.

Yup, Dana has been excellent since he got to take decisions on personnel.  He has found some good role players at the bottom of the barrel, and they have been a huge factor in this team being 15 games over .500. Those deadline trades have all been money, and will pay huge dividends come playoff time and next year. Sanchez has 2 years of arbitration left, and Urias has 1, so they aren't half season rentals and will give Dana a ton of flexibility in the offseason.

If the team can get some more healthy pitchers back, the bullpen will improve greatly. Neris isn't good, but you need some guys to eat innings for now, and they still have another ~45 games to play. I don't think he will be here much longer, as other dudes get promoted, but he's fine for a stopgap. The playoff roster for this team should be stacked and worthy of winning it all.

back to back nerris would be too much for mlb

surly thread is the manager at that yankees game, hader comes off the field and says he's good for another inning

whats your move

The biggest issue is the appearances he's made in 4 run games.  That's quite a few unescessary innings.  At least stagger Hader and Abreu in those games.  Don't use both of them when it's not needed.  Hader has thrown the most innings among closers this season.

i don't track it, but how many times were runs added after he was up and ready ?

I don’t blame Espada for the Yankees game. Hader had an easy 9th and then the 10th inning got away from him with a 10 pitch AB to Goldschmidt and a 7 pitch AB to Stanton. No manager is going to take his closer out of that game.

As said above, the Astros have put a lot of extra innings on Hader and Abreu by pitching them in 4 run games.

Abreu has 12 appearances when the Astros were winning by 4 or more runs. Hader has 6 appearances in those situations as well.

Appearances

i'd be curious how many days him and abreu want to go without pitching in a game

those guys throw daily with the pitching coaches

Hader is like 63rd in appearances.  Pure burnout...

astros crack medical team is on the case, everyone just breath !!!

IMG_4972.jpeg

He's on pace for 72.2 IP this season, basically the same as last year. I will blame Espada for when he uses Hader but the volume isn't really an issue to me. Doesn't mean he won't need to be used less as he ages but wasn't really that foreseeable when going from age 30 to age 31.

who's long relief tonight behind arrighetti ?

Should’ve dumped Neris and sent Gordon to the pen for long relief.

nerris !!!!!

Nerris is no Rolaids, that's for sure.

I they are reluctant to jettison the arms they picked up off the scrap heap who have MLB experience but no options remaining. I expect they will hold on to Neris and de Los Santos as long as possible while they can shuttle Gordon up and down.

UP 3 after he's already pitched an inning?  And with how much he's pitched all year?  Bennent Sousa, come on down.

Look man- even with the ghost runner you have a 90% chance of winning the game without going to the 11th inning. If they score exactly three you still have basically a 50/50 chance starting the 11th.  IT's something like 94% chance of winning with a neutral/average pitcher.  Sousa is a little better than that. Call it 95.  Let's say Hader is 100% (he's not) but being as generous as possible here... for every 20 times you trot sousa out there instead of hader you get 1 less win.  Is that worth putting 20 more high stress innings on Hader's are over the course of the year?  Especially with how much he's been pitching?

Not a fucking chance man. Dumb dumb Espada for a reason.

Here is the math:

Here’s what I found for the distribution of runs scored in an inning with a runner on second and 0 outs:

From FanGraphs (using 2019 data), in that specific base-out situation, the breakdown is:

  • 0 runs scored: 39.2%

  • 1 run: 31.7%

  • 2 runs: 14.6%

  • 3 runs: 7.5%

  • 4 runs: 3.6%

  • 5 runs: 1.8%

  • 6 or more runs: 1.6%

Sousa pitched the 6th and 7th inning that game.

This team actually needs Dubin back. Without Dubin, Abreu is the only righty in the bullpen who you can count on.

I’m guessing Hader goes on the 10 day IL to rest and they bring Dubin up.

100% lock Hader on the IL, and it's apparently muscle and not ligament- so that's good. It didn't have to be Sousa- I'd be fine with Okert.  Hell- I'd have preferred Gordon I think since you decided he wasn't starting Sunday.

But yeah, Dubin coming back will be a godsend, too bad it's not to add to Hader and instead it's to replace.

absolutely the best case scenario and I hope that's the news we get today

The Astros against Dustin May:

Peña 6, Correa 5, Altuve DH, Sánchez 9, Walker 3, Diaz 2, Trammell 7, Urías 4, Melton 8

astros did nerris a solid letting him get his 10 year milestone here

that's the type of move that only strengthens the clubhouse culture

It will be interesting to see how Abreu handles being the 9th inning guy.

By walking the first batter just like he does now.

Looking at clock and I'm just, "Fuck, two and a half more hours???"  People can bitch about the season being too long, but I don't think so.

Not sure how the hell that is a quote.  I've only had one beer.
