Schlong undefeated?

Unfortunately, if her entire team and coaches thinks she’s being abused by her boyfriend, it’s probably true and she’s just too emotionally attached to him to end the relationship.

Pretty sure her first post after her announcement of taking the season off was a picture of the boyfriend

So yes. Undefeated

#1 - Hookers  #2 - Nash  Stafford's depends on how Torrey does next 2 years.

Yeah, the grouping is

Marshevet (T&F) and Destinee (volleyball and T&F)

Kathleen and Kristen (WBB)

Torrey (VB) and Imani (WBB)

Torey and Imani will probably end up #2 - the Nash sisters didn't do much here under Gail.  Kathleen finished with some Texas records (first Texas player with 1000 points, 900 rebounds, 200+ threes and fastest Texas player to 1000 points, 500 rebounds, 150 threes) but Kristen was a total bench contributor, not a starter

The Hooker sisters have something like 7 or 8 NCAA individual titles between them and Destinee was on the 2009 runner-up team for volleyball

And of course, on the men's side - Sam and Emmanuel Acho and D'Onta and Armani Foreman

Colt by himself elevates the McCoy brothers into the conversation on the men's side.  And herp and derp beating aggie IN aggie on tucker's kick? They get my vote.

Obviously Spears is in the conversation for NFOY.

Is Stafford in contention for NPOY? Certainly 1st team AA if she keeps this up.

Yes, she was on the watchlist released over the summer. Typically, you need to be on a title contending team who makes the Final Four to win the award.

Stafford - .317, 4.23kps, .35 aces per set (9 aces to 4 errors), 3.23 dps (as a 6 rotation OH).  I think her digs make up for her blocking (5 blocks, 0.19 blocks per set)

For goodness sake, she has a double double in 5 of 7 matches

12/15 against Creighton
24/12 against Rice
18/10 against Stanford
20/18 against Louisville
15/13 against TCU

She was a dig away against ASU (12/9) and a kill away in the Wisconsin match (9) from having 7 straight games of double digit kills

Passing numbers for TCU (they were really good!)

Stafford 2.63 (8 attempts)
Halter 2.47 (17)
AVW 2.40 (5)
Gary 2.00 (10)
Ames 3.00 (1)

At 7 games into the season, our passing numbers for our main passers:

Gary 2.26
Halter 2.17
AVW 2.07
Stafford 1.98

RPI Futures currently has Texas to finish #2 with a 21-2 record and the #1 SOS.  #1 is Nebraska, who they predict will lose 1 match, with the #5 SOS

The committee loves RPI and the predicted top 4 finishers are Nebraska, Texas, Pitt and Stanford

Kentucky 5, Louisville 6, Creighton 7, TCU 8, Wisconsin 9 (nice little run of teams we play/beat), SMU 11, ASU 17, Tennessee 21, Florida 24, aggy 26, Mizzou 27, Baylor 33

They have aggy going 17-8, which would be awful considering how upperclass that roster is....

Reigning NPOY Babcock
2 really good middles in Jones and Kelly
Brought in a really good setter from Illinois
Brought in a really good libero from FSU
And their OH from The Netherlands has been impressive

I caught a little of the Pitt vs Penn St game last night.  Babcock was unstoppable.  She was serving missiles and her hitting is at another level. The velocity she generates on her serves and swings is crazy.  Penn St had absolutely no answer for her. She definitely looks the part of reigning NPOY.

She a cheat code player. Like Logan Eggleston or Kathryn Plummer the last half decade.

Kind of hard to get there when you're sweeping folks. Not that I'm complaining.

I'd argue the Turati twins would rank above the Nash sisters

Anna has the NCAA championship

Bianca was ranked number 1 individually

Multiple All American Awards and Conference titles between them. Don't think there were any conference titles or AA awards for the Nash sisters.

Last non-conf match of the year (and yet another ranked team)

#21 Baylor

6-2 - they have played 2 ranked teams and lost to both in 5 (SMU at a neutral site and at Florida)

They were running a 2-setter system but one of them got hurt in the Florida match and she didn't play against UCF, so they may have moved back to a 5-1

Posted

You know, for most programs, a 3-rotation freshman OH hitting .184 at 2.58 kps and 10 blocks (against a schedule with 6 top 20 teams) would be pretty decent, but then AVW looks over at her teammate Cari Spears, also a freshman, playing 6-rotations as an OPP, hitting .316 at 3.38 kps and 17 blocks and 38 digs.

But AVW also passes in serve receive (reception of .949 with 3 errors in 59 attempts) and Cari doesn't

So we have 2 dynamite freshmen who do two different things well.

Am i crazy to think this team might even be more talented than those national championship teams? The talent on this team is something. Right now the only question is if experience will be a factor in the postseason.

I don't know much about volleyball other than TX is badass.  Question, mostly rhetorical.  Why does TX seem to play a ranked team every game while the rest of the SEC plays powerhouses like Kennesaw St and Upper SC State?

Well, there's no O'Neal type in the middle. Also, both of those national championship teams were unreal from the service line during tournament time.

Because of Stafford, this team is better with back row defense. But as good as Halter/Gary are, and they're outstanding, are they that much better than Fleck/Halter, or come tournament time, Halter/Barnes was pretty salty, too (Barnes seemed to take a while to get acclimated during the regular season).

It's still early in the season. What I will say is that the last two years the team started off slow. And then last year they never really got it going. Spears is just so otherworldly on the right side and the back row. But the national championship team with Eggleston/Skinner was pretty loaded. Remember, they only lost the one match against Iowa State all year. I also really liked Ka'aha'aina-Torres as a setter. They had Parra on the bench.

I'll also say the 2021 team that made the national championship match was really loaded, too.

Nonetheless, this team is sure fun to watch. It's been a really impressive early season run, no question. I feel like that's a conversation better left for after the season. Without question, though, this team looks a heck of a lot better in the early going than the last couple of years.

Coach Elliott has always believed in a rigorous non-conference schedule.  I think that's partly because of the BXII where we mostly would not be challenged during conference play.  Kept us from seeing "big dogs" in the tourney for the first time.  And Lord knows, I think BXII play put us to sleep many times and we barely roused for the tourney.  Also let us get close without top flight defensive play, meaning a 1, 2, or 3 loss record, high ranking and tournament seeding without being tested like the B10, P10, or even SEC.

This has been an unusually loaded nonconference slate.

I don't know if this is germane or not, but Texas tends to play fewer matches overall than any other program in the country. Elliott's primary focus is on navigating RPI to give his squad the best chance of finishing in the top 4 and being a regional host. There's no other program that does a better job of scheduling for RPI purposes. In fact, he was known to talk to other coaches in the Big 12 to try to help them get higher RPI numbers, too. I'm willing to bet he's doing some of the same things in the SEC, but he's not going to have the same communication level with the other SEC coaches early on.

Some of these teams really need confidence boosting wins more than they need to risk losing against better competition every match. For the bigger programs like Kentucky and Florida, they like getting in more home matches, too.

This team has solid leadership in Emma and Ella and I think that's worth noting in terms of where we end up.

The SEC hasn't been a great volleyball conference. For years it was Florida and that's about it. Kentucky came on when Craig Skinner was hired.

But over the years the Big 12 had Nebraska, then after they left Kansas was a Final Four team, and then of course Baylor with Pressley. The Pac 12 was traditionally the volleyball power. Then the Big 10 took over the mantle. Even now I'd say the ACC is the better conference, at least at the top. But it sure appears like the SEC is putting resources into volleyball. At this point it's light years better than the Big 12 is.

I hadn't seen that about the RPI "gaming," but makes perfect sense and ties in, again, with weakness of BXII.

I dont think people realized how good Stafford was.

She was a first team All American. I knew she was outstanding. I didn't expect her to be THIS outstanding.

I'd even argue her role has been diminished somewhat because of Spears' dominance.

Nebraska was the preseason heavy favorite and hasn't lost against a good schedule. They are incredibly deep - their B team could possibly make the final four.

Nebraska is loaded with talent and experience. They haven't lost a match. They crushed Stanford, who we took to 5 sets (we swept Creighton, who Nebraska took to 5 sets, so I'm not saying that's definitive). I don't have an issue with Nebraska being #1.

The critical part is getting into that top 4. Texas has done an amazing job putting themselves in a position where they're going to have to have almost something of a collapse in tournament play not to earn one of those. Whether it's the top overall seed or the #2 overall seed is of lesser importance. You're in the bracket with either the 8th best team or the 7th best team, and in most years both of those teams are going to be pretty good. The most dangerous opponent if you're a regional host is one of these top programs that falters a bit during the season but then puts it all together come tournament time, like Nebraska when they beat us in the regionals in Gregory a few years back, or us two years ago when we went on that absurd run beating the other #1 seeds Stanford, Wisconsin, Nebraska back to back to back.

I hear people talk about parity, but from my vantage point there's a huge talent discrepancy between the very top teams, and then the top 25 types outside of the first 8. It will be very difficult for an opponent to match up with Texas unless they have a whole lot of size, good scoring, and decent backcourt defense. That's only a handful of programs.

It was hilarious watching Stafford crush the ball on the bic in the third set. Having that as a weapon but never really unleashing it because you have Spears on the court at the same time is kinda funny to me.

If there's a match against a top team like Kentucky where Texas is going off with the D-ball with Spears and the bic with Stafford I'm going to laugh my ass off.
