I may be wrong, but I think he automatically got second when the fielder fell into the stands with the ball.

Well damn.
I was going to say I’ve never heard that, but assuming this is true:

When a fielder makes a catch and carries the ball or falls into dead ball area (like the stands), the ball immediately becomes dead and any runner on base is awarded one base. So, a fielder should consider the game situation to determine if the play might take him into dead ball area and advance the runner. For instance, if the winning run is on 3B, and less than two outs, it is not a good play.
