Can someone explain the difference between a PWO and a regular walk-on? My buddy that played for Texas State used to say there was pretty much no difference at all, PWO's still had to do all the same shit and go through the try-out process.

Interesting. My understanding is it's two things: 1.) Don't have to try out. You have a roster spot. 2.) You start at or near the top of the list of guys that could find themselves with a scholarship should one come available.

His dad was a fast son of a bitch. Played in exactly the wrong era, though. After the option, and before ZR, RPO, etc.

He could run the option like a demon. In today's era, he could have been a legit multitool slot/rb/go win the game hybrid player. He was a senior my freshman year at Westlake and was a god on campus.

Glad to see his kid is gonna be a longhorn, but fuck, this makes me feel old.

Preferred walk-ons are guaranteed a spot on the roster. Their preferred status means the college coach wants the recruit on their team, but the coach doesn’t have a scholarship for them. In football, this is a common way to recruit specialist positions like kickers and punters.

While preferred walk-ons don’t receive an athletic scholarship, they still go through the recruiting process. When a spot opens up on the depth chart, preferred walk-ons are often first in line. Preferred walk-ons can earn a scholarship going into their second season, but nothing is a sure thing.

All of the youngs around here should feel privileged to share this board with you and our other surlyites from your era.

One thing about some of us "olds" that just occurred to me the other day, I have been lucky enough to have seen everyone of our championship teams.
