How many here have seen Sahara? I never even knew the movie existed until a couple of years ago. Great stuff.

Sahara is great. He made some really good war movies. Across The Pacific, Action in the North Atlantic and the original Korean War MASH movie, Battle Circus.

One of my favorite movies is Petrified Forest where he is actually billed below Leslie Howard and Bette Davis.

Bogart was still a journeyman type actor at the time (1936) but Howard insisted that Bogart get the part instead of Edward G. Robinson. This part put him on the map and made him a star.

He was forever grateful to Leslie Howard, so much so that he and Lauren Bacall named their daughter Leslie Howard Bogart in his honor.

Love Caine Mutiny but GD Willie was such a pussy and Mr. Ferrer was outstanding.

Caine Mutiny was great, except for the Willie Keith romance part. Problem was that Robert Francis and May Winn weren't talented enough to be on the screen with Bogart, Van Johnson, E. G. Marshall, and Fred MacMurray. Bogart playing a Captain descending into madness, and MacMurray playing a weasel who could come off as reasonable while spreading poison were great.

Trivia note: Van Johnson got the scar on his forehead in a car accident. He covered it with makeup for most movies, but thought Steve Maryk should have a scar.

if you haven't read the book...

Spoiler

the ending of the movie, with Willie ending up under his old captain, was a Hollywood "happy ending." In the book,  Keefer becomes Captain, and Willie becomes his executive officer. The book explores Keefer's stint as the commander of the Cain, where he has his own "Yellowstain" incident, and follows Willie as he becomes the last commander of the Caine.
