Need a new microwave

Recommended Posts

Ours crapped out (not great timing with four of us stuck at home) and it’s 19 years old, so I figure it’s probably not worth fixing. It’s a 30” built-in (not over the stove). Has microwave technology changed much in 20 years? Any features I should look for, brands to avoid, etc?

Too bad you don't need over the range. Walmart has a RCA 1.7 ft stainless steel microwave/convection combo online for $225. That's about $200 cheaper than any other micro/convection combo OTR. They listed the wrong dimensions at the manufacturer. It's a regular 30" but it's listed as a 20" and I guess they priced it as a 20". Only way I found out it was wrong was a complaint left by someone that wanted a small one. Can't give you a review yet because I still have to install the damn thing. It weighs a ton and none of the old mounts match up.

It's worth pulling the range out, assuming it's a free-standing.

Leaning over the range to install the mounts, and lift the heavy mofo sucks.  If you can get a shoulder under it when you install, it's a lot easier.  And besides, it's fucking filthy under your range and you need to clean.

Listen to Gill. I have done this. Luckily the one I’m replacing this time is a built in off to the side. The old one lasted 19 years, so there’s that.

But it matches the decor.

Microwave's are only built to last a few years these days unless you are getting a high end (~$800) one. When mine went out we wasted some money trying to fix but finally got a new one. I went with a JennAir  that doubles as a convection oven for those times that we are looking a lot of things and needed a second oven.

I like the one I bought years ago, that has both microwave and convection cooking options. We don't use the convection very much because we have a double oven, but we do use it during holidays and parties as a third conventional oven to time the food perfectly with a lot of dishes. if it's a low build in I might opt for the drawer variety.

So, these convection-micro combos...do they require 220/240 volts?

They don't. I have one that isn't otr that has convection, microwave and grill (basically a broiler) it's honestly the best 400 dollar appliance I've ever bought.

It's fucking awesome being able to microwave foil too.

I have the Samsung Duo. We love the features. Convection, grill, microwave, toaster, all in one. 110 volts. I believe convection on high is 1800 watts.
