  1. Thanks, y'all. This and the Dublin/Ireland thread have been a great help (speaking of which, anyone seen @MidTexHorn lately?) Looking at places to stay in Galway -- any strong recommendations on areas or specific places? Crane Bar has made my short list for some trad, and it seems like that area or walking distance from it is a good spot. I was looking at AirBNBs in the area, and The Heron's Nest looks cool, but I'd love some thoughts from those with experience.
  2. Thanks, definitely renting a car to minimize shuffling family/luggage through public transportation. Any particular reason to fly into Shannon over Cork? I was just looking for the cheapest destination to the western side, as the drive distances seem pretty similar.
  3. I'm planning a trip for July 2020 (London, Scotland, Ireland), and while I may make a separate post for advice on that trip, right now I'm just trying to get a basic plan, so I thought I'd ask here first. It'll be me, wife, 12yo and 15yo boys, first international trip as a family. 7 or maybe 8 full days in Ireland. Fly into either Cork or DUB, leave from DUB, will be renting a car. I'm to the point of having too many cool things to do and see already, but instead of wearing everyone out Griswold-style, I'd prefer to spend more time in fewer places (probably stay 2 nights at each stop), as I hope this isn't the last time I go, and I'm trying to instill a love for travel in my boys, rather than checking off a list of sights. I'm pretty much set on some time in Doolin for pubs/music and the Cliffs of Moher, and a full day for Dublin before we fly out. Big decisions I'm trying to make: -- Ring of Kerry vs Dingle Peninsula/Sleah Head loop: Leaning Dingle here (my wife is used to that), as we're happier away from crowds, and I see my boys could take surfing lessons at Inch Beach. -- Galway vs. Killarney NP/Gap of Dunloe: Tough choice, as I read awesome stuff about both, and they are very different experiences. I'm leaning toward a couple nights in Galway, as I'm planning on a few days on Skye in Scotland for hiking/outdoors stuff, and it's probably good for us to do something a little more urbane and out of the usual for us. Galway seems like it would fit the bill there. Maybe save Killarney for a future trip which would allow for RoK and Skellig Michael, as I don't see any way to cram that in this time. Any thoughts? This thread has been greatly helpful.
  4. Dammit, assholes, I'm already having to cut shit out of my itinerary, Quit giving me ideas. Appreciate the recommendations. Looked around at other airports, but the best current price seems to be reversing the trip and doing AUS-->LHR then returning DUB-->AUS. Tickets for 4 in Premium Economy (BA metal) are ~4800 (a big drop from 6200 just for flip-flopping). For those with more recent experience, is that decent enough for summer travel season to go ahead pull the trigger, or is it worth watching prices longer?
  5. Yep, I'm looking around at other options, but it may come down to trading money for the most efficient use of time. I'm also trying to simplify things as much as I can since this will be my boys' first trip overseas -- the less time I spend herding cats through the airport, the less my family will hate me.
  6. Stupid question time, I haven't flown overseas in almost 20yrs. Scouting out airfare for the family for AUS --> DUB, then return LHR --> AUS for next July. I've been watching prices for a little while, but for a general reference, is ~$1500 per person in the reasonable range for Premium Economy (AA/BA)? I don't have to hit a home run on the airfare, but I'd like at least a solid base hit. Anyone have experience with the Premium Economy on BA's direct LHR --> AUS flight?

  8. Oskar Blues Old Chub clone today. 16lbs grain, maxes out my rig. Haven't ever added (or felt I needed) the AHS 'Alcohol Boost,' but I had one around, and figured why not for this one. Should serve as a winter warmer. ESB is done and freshly carbonated. Love it -- the weather is turning at precisely the right time.

  11. Just carbonated my first kviek as well, AHS Norsk Gardshus Ale. Kviek is indeed nuts, fermented it at 95 and it ripped through it, starting within an hour or so of pitching. Wish I'd tried kviek back before I had temperature control. ESB, grapefruit IPA, and pumpkin cream ale are presently in various stages of fermentation/conditioning.
  12. Thanks, I'll save ABGB for Sunday. I've been wanting to try it for a long time. Like the St. Elmo idea, any other good spots (not necessarily breweries) for game watching around downtown? Dumb OT question, I know, but I'm rarely around those parts these days.
  13. I'm in Austin for a conference this weekend and haven't been to ABGB -- will they have the game on Saturday night, or should I save ABGB for Sunday and find another place to watch the game (like, maybe, the game)?
  14. Thanks, just got here, wish I had seen that earlier about the coffee. I'll be the guy here with a kid. And your mom.
  15. Taking my 11yo to see Lord Huron tonight (his favorite band) for an early birthday present. Haven't ever been to ACL Live, so looking forward to it -- any tips? Looks like we'll end up with a couple extra tickets, let me know if anyone is interested.
  16. My pastor counters this kind of eye-rolling silliness with, "Nowhere in the Bible does it say 'Be ye stupid.'" Be ye not fucking stupid, you shithead obtuse troll.
  17. Thank you! That's not something I was aware of. I'll look at some other areas or maybe just reverse the trip.
  18. Thanks. I did do that, but from plugging in some multi-city searches it looks that if your airports are in the same region, you can save substantially on one open-jaw itinerary. Hopefully rtracking one-way fares will at least give me an idea of when to check prices.

    Whatcha reading?

Just recently reread Catch 22 (I love it). It's OK if it's not your cup of tea, but maybe try looking at the structure (repetitive, approaches the same events over and over from different angles, jumps around chronologically) as purposeful in portraying the absurdity of war and modern 'humanity.' If you don't know the story, it does draw to something of a conclusion, but it's more about the jarring ride to get there.

  22. Please pardon the relatively basic/noob question, but anyone have a good site to track flight prices for open-jaw flights with flexible dates? It looks like Kayak and Google Flights only allow flexible date tracking for round trip or one way fares. In more detail, I'm looking to put together a trip from AUSish -> DUB then LHRish -> AUSish for 4 travelers over an approx 3wk block for next July. I haven't been overseas in years and while I don't usually cheap out, being smart about a family of 4 can make a big difference in the rest of the trip. Not going to worry about the miles game on this trip (will save that for simpler travel in the future with just the wife), but as a family trip with kids, don't want to get crazy with a cheap complex multi-carrier itinerary which leaves everyone hating Dad. Thanks in advance, travel wizards.
  23. I absolutely love Long Ride Home. I found this EP on the back wall at Waterloo years ago, and it's sadly likely relegated to the dustbin of history (no youtube), but Median States by Quinimine is one of the most haunting tunes I've ever heard. Likewise, it's hard to find, but Milton Mapes put out an album with two great farewell songs, Bowie AZ and Craters of the Moon, if you can find them out there. Kinda strange to find one album with two songs I want played at my funeral. And there's this.
  24. I would say thats doable if your using the most of your 3 weeks off...lets say 19 days total with day 20/21 as rest days when you return....that leaves you with 2 full weeks for ireland/scotland with you only doing 3 days in london. Which leaves you with 2 "travel days" as wiggle room. If you fly in between then you could possibly squeeze in another location or rent car and ferry across for slower/more scenery trip Thanks. As far as getting from Ireland to Scotland, I'm guessing flying is the better bet rather than going out of the way to do a train to Belfast, then the ferry? I've always heard the nightmare stories about Ryanair, is it really that awful? On the one hand, it's only an hour flight, but on the other hand, it sounds like the flight is the least painful part of the process. But for 1/3 the cost...
