  1. Yeah. The limited streets over the bayou + the Washington RR make driving north-south a pain at times. Too many bottlenecks. We also need to eventually move more of the freight traffic out of central Houston. The perfect time would have been as part of the wider expansion of freeways but we can’t be bothered to be forward thinking. the city should be working with the RRs to limit rush hour trains. I once asked council member Kamin about this. Her office only replied that the city can’t make the RR do anything. I was disappointed by the answer because good politicians should have other options other than force.
  2. I always thought McCartney was a piece of shit.
  3. I imagine TexAgs are jerking off to the idea of restoring confederate names. Even when they agree with an issue, they have to reject it if the idea is championed by a lib’rul.
  4. This fire like with recent hurricanes or other natural disasters will bring insurance questions that need to be solved. Some states may not allow Insurance companies to accurately model the expected risks based on future projections, they can only look backwards. I believe this differs from state to state. If the companies see too much risk, then the state may have to jump in to provide insurance with a public-private insurance company. Then taxpayers may partially be on the hook for payouts. Note, CA recently made some regulation changes that some see as insurance industry friendly to keep them from ending coverage. All homeowners may also need to accept higher premiums or higher deductibles since damages are increases. Which in turn may impact housing pricing. Future owners may value a house purchase at a lower amount since their annual insurance premiums would be much higher. The recent disaster damage increases, whether or not someone believes in climate change, can't be denied.
  5. Crazy how that the aftermath of a gun tragedy, we hear from the GQP politicians that it's the wrong time to talk politics when the event just occurred and people are suffering. Then switch to an on-going natural disaster in a blue state, and they practically want to call for hearings before the disaster is over.
  6. Didn’t Kim Jung-il reportedly shoot a NK record 35 under par with 10 holes in one? He would laugh at Trump’s 68.
  7. Since I’m still working and contributing, I don’t worry about dividends in the tax advantaged plans. Just want growth. On a brokerage account, I’ve been playing around with throwing excess money here and there into dividend stocks. First it was individual and lately more into SCHD and SPYD ETFs. The eventual goal is to earn $1,000/mo in dividends by retirement. Whether I stick to path, who knows. At first I chased yield but realized that too many of those stocks either lose price or they offer anemic dividend growth. I’ve become more interested in higher quality stocks that grow dividends by 4-5% per year and have solid cash flow. I figure that is the best long term play.
  8. I don’t recall seeing someone signing anything at a large event. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen. I have seen the closed captions on a board for the announcers at NRG Stadium.
  9. With the prevalence of closed caption, I can see that some sign language at press conferences is redundant. Then again communication redundancy is not necessarily a bad thing especially in emergency situations. i don’t know if it’s needed to sign the national anthem in a large stadium. For the people who need the sign language, are they actually able to see the person? And if the sign language is on the screen, why not just go with closed captions? Very far down the list of things that bother me.
  10. Idea of the day. Churches are missing out on sponsorship opportunities. “Today the Lord’s Prayer is brought you by Golden Corral off Hwy 456. Tell them you were here and you will receive $2 off per meal today only. Our father in heaven…”
  11. Tragedy of the commons
  12. When Houston started toll lanes (dynamic pricing or not) with HOV, some complained by saying it was a govt benefit for the wealthy. Called them Lexus lanes. I saw them as a win for everyone. People that had excess cash or were motivated to get to their destination were taken out of the normal lanes. Even if you can’t afford it everyday, how great is it that the option is there if needed. Many first reactions to anything new by the govt is “why can’t I have that?” Honesty some people haven’t grown emotionally since preschool.
  13. Found that odd as well. Very high schoolish and I can’t recall ever seeing that at a college game. I already find it odd that we sing the national anthem at games but not in other aspects of our lives. But whatever. I stand for all of these things mainly because it triggers others when they see someone sitting down.
  14. Bet if asked, she would say that we should accept some people but others take it too far. And that it would be better if they just kept it a secret. Then everyone’s happy.
  15. given the large number of rapists in these churches, I'm starting to think that access to children or teenagers is the main reason some/all of these guys went into the ministry.
  16. Bush will be there.
  17. I will give Amy coney Barrett credit for following precedence by not putting the president-elect above the law, but is that how far we’ve fallen that we are reduced to praising a scotus justice for following the law? Of course others will pay for all of these rulings. SCOTUS allows the sentencing and case reports to be released, then trump will go after Liz Cheney or whatever. He’s a child.
  18. Gotta keep expanding these systems or they might fade. It creates a network effect. If they're not worthwhile expanding them, then perhaps they should be retired.
  19. According to protocol, Obama, or more precisely Michelle is supposed to sit next to Trump. GW and Laura are between the Clintons and Obamas. Trump and Melania will move up to the other side of the Bidens and presumably stay there after '28. Jill just the pleasure of sitting next to Trump in the future but even his years are numbered.
  20. I recognize that I don't know the scope of this problem but I've watched news reports showing how in a minute you can see dozens of people jumping turnstiles or holding the exit door open for others in enter for free. People like that should get a thump on the head by a billy club. Now if NYC wants to give students or poor people free passes (maybe they already do) then set up that system so everything is planned.
  21. People are losing their homes and Carolla is holed up in a hotel complaining about regulations on rebuilds. What an asshole. CA does have some burdensome regulations but things are also different when recovering from a natural disaster as opposed to building a structure for your nanny or MIL. EDIT: This disaster also may give more credence to the having even stricter regulations. While a wildfire like this is tough to control via building regulations, it's not out of the realm of possibilities that poor construction material can add to a normal wildfire.
  22. Get prepared that Apple TV releases shows in the old manner of one per week. Infuriating but it also keeps you from binging all at once. Unless of course you wait 2 months to start.
  23. Hoping that someone loses in a rape case, even if they’re innocent, is more of an indictment against you.
  24. It easily could be 100%. Paying a lawyer’s hourly rate to hold back ChatGPT to give his AI tools time to catch up? That would be a very large ROI.
