We are doing ruins and cenotes until we fly back home on Monday. I don't have an agenda yet, plan on figuring it out tomorrow. I think I want to hit Azul and Dos Ojos but I'd be up for meeting if you were able to meet at/near a cenote or some ruins. I have zero idea what ruins to hit up.

We are really enjoying it here. I love it. Crazy how you can go from the ridiculousness and character of Hidalgo and stray dogs and cats to a beautiful quiet resort hotel on a world class beach within a few steps. I also love the vibrancy and character of the central and southern part of the island. Off to Puerto Aventuras tomorrow. Some food/restaurant thoughts and pics. First, agree with whoever said it that it isn't necessarily cheap here. Paid in pesos but my family of four I don't think had a meal for less than $130 or so. Now I'm not complaining but not all that different from anywhere else, be it home or on vacation. Yeah that usually included a marg or two for me and sometimes a frozen drink for the kids. Also it seems to be a thing here that they don't bring you your bill until you ask for it, even if you're clearly done, have declined dessert and your table is clean. Lesson learned. I don't want to be the pushy American so it made for some awkward moments. The best thing I tasted this week honestly was the house bread at Rolandi's. It was this giant puff of hot soft bread drizzled with olive oil and salt. It was gone in about 20 seconds. Pizza was ok. I ordered the pizza and my son ordered the grilled chicken and we agreed to share. I had two pieces of pizza and he had the rest of both dishes. Welcome to feeding a 15 year old. We hit up Taco Tuesday at Xantolo. Taco lunch for 200 pesos with a free marg/virgin daiquiri. Wife and daughter had the Arrachera tacos, son had ribeye tacos and I had al pastor. Very good! Basto's was good but I like my Arrachera and my daughter liked her burger more than my son enjoyed his ribeye (very thin and a ton of non edible fat). My wife ordered sopa even though she's never had it before and it was meh. Loved our server even though he missed half of our drinks and didn't bring the bill for like 25 minutes after we were done. You guys were nails on that seasoning they put in the Arrachera. So damn good. Last night for dinner we hit the taco trucks and brought them back to order drinks and eat poolside at Ixchel. That was a lot of fun and cheap and delicious. Not a ton of taco trucks where I live unless you're in SW Detroit and I'm not often. Today we went golf carting again to the Southern part of the island to catch some things we missed on Tuesday when we went to Punta Sur. I was trying to please everyone and deciding between Mango's, Yayo and Oscar's and I...chose poorly. Oscar's had pizza, pasta and Mexican and my daughter isn't much for Mexican. We got there, sat down, ordered drinks, and the guy was like no pizza, no pasta, only grill. He was probably the only person we encountered all week who wasn't very friendly. Anyway the boy and I ordered Arrachera steaks and they were cooked to the texture of an old leather boot. Still not horrible but trying to cut that thing with a butter knife was a good forearm workout. Daughter got nachos that she liked and my wife tried to order a burger with fries but somehow they only understood the fries part. She's a Midwest people pleaser and refused to try to correct the issue and had fries for lunch. Margs were strong, though. 3/10 do not recommend. Tonight we had the best meal of the stay. I think I would definitely recommend this place to the surly Isla mafia. Maybe kind of new and slightly bougie as far as bougie can be on the Isla. Rusticco. 4.9* on Google and the pics looked too nice for us. A true foodie place and we aren't foodies. But they had something for everyone and it was on point. Pregame I had the pineapple marg with charred rosemary. We ordered an app of shrimp tempura with bam bam sauce that was delicious. Wife and daughter split some pasta Bolognese with vodka sauce that they loved and a chicken Caesar. Son got an amazing looking Arrachera steak, medium rare. He said as good as it was the carrots were even better. I had lobster tacos and they were dynamite. Pics below. Slammed and went hard. Some other random pics and a video of Hidalgo at night for posterity. Thanks for turning me on to this awesome place surly. What an amazing four days and unlike anyplace we have ever been. We are running out of family trips before the boy graduates, but I will be back at some point. PXL_20250724_012652665.mp4 PXL_20250722_164115262.mp4

I looked at the menu at Javi's when we were looking for a place the first night and passed. Not a lot of options for my daughter. There is definitely sargassum up and down Norte. It's not out of control and you can swim around it depending on where it settles day to day but it's there. If you go further North towards Mia there's even more.

I left my wife for 10 minutes today to go find Jorge (pedicab guy) near the ferry terminal and this was the result. Didn't ask a price of course and realized later they charged her $60 US. She is absolutely the person that takes the American flag on the toothpick and strikes up conversations with the people handing them out every time we are in downtown Detroit or Chicago. No CR. Ate at Basto's tonight. Had the Arrachera and it was delicious. Punta Sur was well worth the trip. Gorgeous.

We are here. It is indeed beautiful and interesting and fun. Carm transfers were great. Got a pedicab guy to bring our bags over after I exchanged cash for pesos and I fucked up the exchange in my head. I thought I was giving him about $20 US, turns out I gave him about $6. Going to see if I can find him tomorrow. It's going to be a challenge finding places my daughter will eat but I'm going to insist we try Basto's. Anyone have a line on a decent gym on the island? The hotel gym is very hotel gym-y in a bad way.

This must be a newish model. I saw it reviewed on a site as the most powerful pocket bidet on the market. Obviously I ordered it. Can confirm. Much stronger than the battery powered Brondell and Toto that I bought a couple of years ago. Also the bottle design is pretty neat and holds a shit ton more water, even without expanding it. Definitely going to be my new travel companion. https://a.co/d/9NoZnhF

Hmm. I don't know if I like Shane or not. Sometimes I find him funny but sometimes I want him to be way more funny than he is. Sorry Derks. I get playing a character and I definitely get understanding a guy on podcasts that you don't get to see on stage. My disclaimer is that my favorite comedian is Anthony Jeselnik and it isn't close, and that's backed by listening to 4-5 years of the JRVP podcast. It hits you or it doesn't. Also, for posterity, you can't prove an opinion. Sometimes you just gotta roll with the fact that other people don't share yours. 🤷♂️

No one wants to swim with whale sharks. It's not that anyone is scared of them, we are not snorkel people and no one feels the need to touch or get that close to a sea creature. I would like to see them, though, and without having to spend 6 hours on a tour. Are there other options?

This was a really good derby. I love the Derby for some reason. I watched the ESPN2 broadcast and it was so much fucking better. The camera angle from behind the mound on the main broadcast? We don't care.

Super helpful posts, thank you both. @Wally Pryor 4 nights on the island on PN at Ixchel. I was thinking we wouldn't need a golf cart. You disagree? Those golf cart adventures sound like fun and I know my son would love to see that church, he thinks shit like that is super cool. Also, family of 4, boy 15, girl 12. Is a beach club something I should be looking at? It seems kind of young adultish but maybe I just don't fully grasp the concept. I thought we would have our fair share of pool and beach at Ixchel.

Can we please come up with some new insults? It's 2025 not 1989.

Time for another ‘my dog is awesome’ thread
Baboontyme replied to Patricio Swayze's topic in Daily Texan
A little late but what kind of tips? Just went through this a few months ago. I basically kept her within eyesight of someone at all times and used a shirt off of Amazon to keep her away from the incision until the stitches came out. She never bothered it once and only wore the cone of shame in the car on the way home from the vet. -
I'm a couple weeks out. The sargassum situation is looking better. Cannot wait. I am city wise and keep my head on a swivel. But I have never been to Mexico and I'm not used to carrying cash with me at all, let alone at a pool/beach/cenote pool or whatever. What's my best bet here? I don't even own a wallet. One of those travel friendly RFID blocking wallets and never let it leave my body when I'm out of the hotel room? Leave it at the pool under your t shirt and flip flops and never let it leave your sight? I am assuming I need to have cash with me at all times down there, correct? Getting a drink at the pool, tipping, etc.

Hey sometimes you gotta get that fried chicken sandwich fix. I actually debated it last time I got the grilled. I definitely had the devil shoulder trying to convince the angel shoulder to go with the fried. Devil shoulder lost that day but he'll claim victory soon in another category.
-
Sorry I re-read your post and I totally misunderstood it. I thought you were complaining about the grilled chicken sandwich. I have never had or tried their breaded chicken sandwich. I last had the grilled chicken sando probably in April-ish. Minus mayo add pickle. Like I said it was probably the best fast food grilled chicken sandwich I had ever had.
-
I don't understand the hate for the grilled chicken breast sandwich. Maybe yours wasn't good, but did you expect them to serve you a grilled thigh sandwich? That's not really a thing, is it? I personally prefer white to dark in my poultry and I appreciate the fact that I can get a pretty damn tasty grilled chicken sandwich from a fast food joint. I don't think I've ever had a better one than the one Culver's serves in fact. Have you had a grilled chicken from Wendy's or McDonald's? I believe that is Chihuahua meat, not chicken. It's a really good option for me if I'm in a pinch and need to resort to fast food. I haven't had a burger from there in a few years so no comment on that.

I don't have much for you. A day each for Haleakala and Road to Hana. We did sunset rather than sunrise and it was great. We didn't get to do the road but did make one of the first stops at Twin Falls and that was cool, the girls will like that. We took the ferry to Lanai one day and went to the cat sanctuary. I'm not a huge cat person but the rest of my family is and they enjoyed it. I don't know the status of the marina in Lahaina. People like Duke's in Ka'anapali in front of Honua Kai. We had breakfast there one day and it was pretty decent. We did Old Lahaina Luau. It survived and is open last I checked. It was a great experience for us, not cheap though. Have fun.

As they say, if you have to explain the joke, it probably wasn't very good. Made me chuckle last night, at least.

Finished Project X. Is Moira trying to give Hardy the Virgil case?
-
I started this new show, it's about some arse hole detective in Scotland who is investigating a disappearance and monkeys. I think it's called Project X. I'm on the second to last episode and the monkeys have become self aware. Really good.

There is supposed to be more Nets talk in Part 2, as well.

KD was a guest on Mind the game with Steve Nash and Bron. Part 1 dropped this week. Highly recommend for basketball nerds. It's on YouTube. Looking forward to Part 2.

That's what I said at the time. Give it two months. Sorry to say but it just gets more irritating as time goes on and you try to find older stuff on your phone.
