  6. If it's any consolation, most of the rest of the piece makes it sound like Trump's chances are slim. But, yeah, I'm familiar with the NYTimes pitchbot meme.
  7. Since most of the conversation in the NH primary thread has drifted over into a discussion on the general election, and we all believe the remainder of the GOP primaries is more or less perfunctory at this point because Trump is the presumptive candidate, we can probably go ahead and get campaign talk going here. Good overview of where things stand as of now: Outside the soft bubble of Republican primaries, Mr. Trump’s campaign is confronting enduring vulnerabilities that make his nomination a considerable risk for his party. Those weaknesses were laid bare in New Hampshire on Tuesday, where independents, college-educated voters and Republicans unwilling to dismiss his legal jeopardy voted in large numbers for his rival, Nikki Haley. Mr. Trump still won easily. The voters opposed to his bid didn’t outnumber the many Republicans clamoring to see him return to power. But the results, delivered by more than 310,000 voters in a politically divided state, pointed to the trouble ahead for Mr. Trump as the presidential race leaves MAGA world and enters a broader electorate, one that rejected him less than four years ago. “When I have people come up to me who voted for Reagan in ’76 and have been conservative their whole life say that they don’t want to vote for Trump again, that’s a problem,” Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida said Tuesday in an interview with Blaze TV, a conservative media company, just a couple of days after he ended his own campaign and endorsed Mr. Trump. “So he’s got to figure out a way to solve that.” President Biden would face his own challenges in a rematch of the 2020 contest. Unlike four years ago, Mr. Biden, 81, is widely disliked and most Americans disapprove of his job performance. Four years older than Mr. Trump, Mr. Biden is facing deep skepticism about his age and is struggling to hold onto the coalition of voters who underpinned his first victory. He has turned to issues like abortion rights and democracy, themes that resonate among his base, independents and even some moderate Republicans. But like Mr. Trump, he faces some doubts from within his own party. Immigration, inflation and his support for Israel in its war in Gaza have chipped away at his support among young voters, Black and Latino voters, and liberals. “The general election really starts now, and you’ve got the two most unpopular political leaders going who are going to be facing off against each other,” Neil Newhouse, a Republican pollster, said. “It’s a lesser-of-two-evils election.” Rest of analysis (NYTimes): https://archive.is/zPgJV
  8. Agreed. He's not even using the most recent map. He's using the one from 2016 when Hillary lost as a way to make it look even worse. Just look at Texas where Tarrant and Williamson counties turned blue in 2020.
  9. Personally, I think it's time to put that notion to bed. For all his flaws, Abbott isn't dumb enough at this point to think Trump would consider him a viable VP candidate. And, at his age, he likely isn't entertaining the thought that Trump would select him for SCOTUS should a position open up. That leaves us with two options: Abbott believes this is a good policy and is promoting a State's Rights stance against the federal government. This option is ideologically consistent with longstanding anti-federalism beliefs among Texas conservatives going back to the Antebellum. Abbott is doing this because he recognizes that his supporters, both voters and financial backers, want this. This option is logically consistent for someone who wants to be re-elected or wants to pad his bank account as he heads into retirement. Let's just face it. Today, the Republican Party of Texas is now the Retrograde Party of Trump. If you want continued support from its base, you have to behave like a reactionary and rancorous xenophobe. And you had better stand up to those effeminate pansies in DC because no red-blooded Texan is gonna take orders from those pointy-headed liberals, RINOs, and various other beta cucks. That's it. Don't just be an asshole; be THE asshole and we'll shower you with praise and money. That's the more straightforward and logical explanation.
  10. I've been saying it for a while, but to those who were paying attention back then, Buchanan's strength in the primaries in 1992 and 1996 was one of the big warning signs about where the Republican Party was heading. You can draw a direct line from Buchanan to Trump in both policy and style: anti-woman anti-immigrant racist rhetoric protectionist isolationist culture wars blustering assholery

  12. I took a long road trip from Texas to New York with my daughter this summer to help her move into a new apartment at school. We started having a conversation about Ukraine, and she immediately brought up that she didn't understand why we weren't supporting the Palestinians as much as the Ukrainians since they're both being illegally occupied by a stronger military force. And this was before all the shit that's happened since October. Yes, I'd say the kids care about this issue, bigly, much more than ours cared about Tibet back in the '90s.
  13. It's also where our family went after our Southern Baptist church service in my small West Texas town was over when I was a kid. My dad didn't care for it too much when I'd put "Grease" or "Staying Alive" on the jukebox, but fuck him. Those songs were groovy, and I wanted to get down.
  14. Same. Neither is my college-aged daughter. She hates it.
  15. So many emoticons to choose from: Heart: Yeah, man, I can relate. Laugh: It's funny because it's true! Fuck you: Don't remind me! Rage: Self-evident. FAFO: Better not cheat to get some strange. PYA: Better not complain, either. Drool doesn't seem to work, so I'll go with that one.
  16. I get what you're saying, but I'm concerned about younger voters sitting it out. They're unenthused right now. Even though college-aged voters and those a little older in their 20s don't generally vote at high shares, their cohort, especially young women, has been coming out to vote since 2018 in much higher numbers than historically. And I'm fairly certain that has made a difference. Offsetting any lingering anger about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is, of course, SCOTUS striking down Roe. Biden's team and all down-ballot candidates need to not only clearly communicate Trump's culpability, but they also need to say what they're going to do about it: pro-rights SCOTUS nominees as replacements, federal legislation to guarantee rights nationally, etc. Also, I fully understand why Kamala isn't popular nationally among the larger public, but is that the case among Gen Z? I honestly don't know, but it could be worth a shot at having her lead campus outreach efforts to young women. The tuition stuff is helping, but that's not the solution. Go bold with some national initiatives to drive down tuition costs. What does that look like? I don't know. I'm also hoping a decision comes out before November on rescheduling weed, but that might not matter because so many Blue states have already legalized it. It could matter in places like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia though. Keep messaging Civil Rights in general: protecting equality, free and fair elections, etc. Talk about protecting their future: the environment. All of the above, not only speaks to what Biden can do over the next four years, but what the platform stands for beyond him. Or, god forbid, he dies or becomes infirm while in office, and Kamala takes over. She needs to show she can hypothetically carry the torch -- even if she's not the party's preferred candidate in '28. Finally, let's all keep our fingers crossed on the economy, as inexperienced young people often are first to the chopping block. If Kamala isn't the right spokesperson for all of the above, Pete sure as hell could, but he's not the appropriate surrogate which is awkward.

  19. The LDS, much like Southern Baptists and the Catholic Church, have been covering up this shit for decades. And with the LDS being so powerful in Utah, they've been getting off light when caught.
  20. Look, man, I'm not defending Hamas, but did you ignore the article I linked showing that thousands of Palestinian civilians are currently prisoners in violation of international law, and many are being tortured? The ONLY points I've been points throughout this entire fucking thread are: Israel's hands are also not clean. The Palestinians have an inalienable right to have their own fully sovereign country, and the current government of Israel, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, has always been opposed to it and continues to flatly refuse to even consider it. The occupation of the West Bank and the continued increase in the number of settlements (i.e., colonies) both a) is against international law and b) further inflames the Palestinians. So long as that state of affairs continues, there is no hope of there ever being peace. Hamas fucking sucks, and far-right Israelis fucking suck. I don't see why you and others have a penchant for defending Israel's government in everything they do when its actions run counter to everything we, as Americans, are supposed to believe: self-determination; life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness; and all that jazz.
  21. And around and around they go. A couple of days ago, Bibi's far-right government rejected a permanent ceasefire by Hamas. https://www.nbcnews.com/investigations/hostage-talks-continue-israel-rejects-hamas-demand-full-idf-withdrawal-rcna134975
  22. There's a piece that came out this morning describing the indiscriminate mass detention of Palestinians during this conflict that's tantamount to kidnapping. The ICRC is investigating cases of thousands of vanished persons (half of whom are suspected of being held by the Israelis) but has only been given proof of life in a handful of cases. The UN and human rights groups are saying their mass detention and treatment could constitute violations of international law, including the torture of civilians. I certainly won't hesitate to say that Hamas's treatment of hostages is worse, but the Israelis are supposed to be the good guys here: Western ally, "only democracy in the Middle East", etc. Free link to the article for those interested so y'all can see photographs and click on all the links embedded within. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/23/world/middleeast/israel-gaza-palestinian-detainees.html?unlocked_article_code=1.P00.9q44.RPeBwbVazKtI&smid=url-share
