  1. Are you suggesting the children should be back in power? Let's see what @realgreggym has to say about that.

  5. Somehow, I missed this thread previously or skimmed over it, but I just spent some time going through this thread reminiscing old shows. One that immediately popped up in my head but hasn't been mentioned is the Twin Peaks theme. Yeah, it's not a rocking anthem or a hummable earworm, but it embodied the iconic and mysterious nature of the show pretty damn well. It's certainly memorable.
  6. It's the 2+2=5 test.
  7. It's not like I haven't given the guy and his brand of humor a shot or have dismissed the guy. In fact, I've watched every sketch of every season of ITYSL, and it's not like I don't appreciate absurd, irreverent, and clever wit. I just think he's kinda shitty at it -- at least to my satisfaction. I'll admit to not having seen The Detroiters, so I'll try to check it out and maybe change my opinion. Anyway, it's not a huge deal, and I'll likely watch this show when it comes out on streaming. I just wanted to chime in and let HOTB know he's not alone.
  8. Is it really an "extreme hypothetical" that Trump "feels empowered to violate federal law" while conducting his official presidential duties?

  10. In other Kid Rock news (yes, I know we have a thread about him somewhere but I'm too lazy to look it up): Kid Rock Throws Tantrum Because No One Clapped for Him During Guest Appearance: β€˜F–k Y’all’ The singer appeared during Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan’s birthday celebration in Nashville over the weekend, but didn’t warm to the crowd’s reception At 54 years old, Kid Rock has not yet outgrown the tantrum-throwing evident in young children who don’t understand that other people’s celebrations aren’t about them. On Saturday evening, the musician stormed offstage at JBJ’s Nashville, where he made a special appearance during Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan’s birthday jam session. β€œFuck them,” Rock said about the audience as he abruptly cut the band off. β€œIf you ain’t gonna clap, we ain’t gonna sing. That’s how it’s gonna go.” The set continued from there, but only for a moment. Rock didn’t seem to be warming to the crowd’s lackluster reception. β€œYou know what, fuck y’all,” he said. β€œYou ain’t gonna clap, I’m gone.” Bryan continued to play with the rest of the band following Rock’s departure, and the festivities went on as planned. Rock has rarely shied away from throwing a fit. In fact, he embraces it, particularly when it comes to politics. β€œI’m part of the problem,” he told Rolling Stone last year. β€œI’m one of the polarizing people, no question. Sometimes I bitch about other people, then I look in the mirror and I’m like, β€˜Oh, yeah, why don’t you shut the fuck up too?’” When asked if this attitude is a product of a broader impulse-control problem, he replied: β€œIt’s a rich-guy issue. No fucks left. I’m not going to get it right every time, but I know my heart’s right.” Rock will embark on the traveling festival Rock the Country with Nickelback in 11 cities across America between April and July.

  12. You're not alone. I just don't get it. He's like a fucking one-trick pony doing a really annoying (AND LOUD) schtick, and I've been completely flabbergasted at his wide appeal. There's nothing remotely clever about it.
  13. Take it to the football music board. But, seriously, rap is fundamentally poetry with a beat. If that's not your thing, cool, but categorically stating that poets who engage in wordplay with a backbeat have "no talent" is pretty dumb. You can, obviously, tell me to shove that opinion up my ass, but I can also say the same to you. With that said, I hope we can agree that posters who copy/paste memes that depict Taylor Swift getting bent over (let's face it: raped) are more deserving of our attention and scorn.
  14. Just make sure you don't mess up some mundane detail in doing so.
  15. It's an interesting question, though, to think through hypotheticals. In Texas, the state charges 6.25 cents sales tax on every dollar spent. That's our baseline. If the store where you purchased an item is located within an incorporated community, you're guaranteed having another penny added to that tax. Moreover, Texas allows for jurisdictions to take up to an additional penny. So, most of us Texans do our shopping where the sales tax is 8.25 cents per buck. So, let's say you buy something for $0.99. The sales tax on that would be $0.081675, meaning the total price you, the consumer, would pay is $1.07. If done the Canadian way, you would then only pay $1.05. Who's losing those two cents? The store, the city, or the state?
  16. I just posted this in that awful Super Bowl thread where old white guys are complaining about rap and posting misogynistic memez.
  17. I won't get into your 4th and 5th lines, but the previous three hit the nail on the head. One final point on the neighbors taking in Palestinian refugees: they rightly point out that Israel will refuse Palestinians re-entry into their own land once the dust all settles, making them complicit in Israeli war crimes as part of some "deal."
  18. I mean, categorically separating Israel from the settlers is also just a denial of fact, but yeah, there are tons of nuanced positions one can hold. For example, one could believe that both groups need/deserve their own homelands: the Two-State Solution. Or, one could also believe that both groups should share the land as a single republic: the One-State Solution. Others could come down on a side that says neither fucking deserves it; it's a holy land for the world's three Abrahamic religions: the No-State Solution. Recently, some bloviating buffoon of a carnival barker actually proposed the US State Solution. But, mostly, I've heard others on this site say only one side should get it: the Final Solution. Yes, some people/posters are very consistent in which of the above positions they advocate for, while others offer nothing but inconsistent positions and constant derision. Where do you stand? The Status Quo Solution? No, not the status quo, because you've already tipped your hand to your lean with this statement: It's long been true that all the other Arab countries "support" the Palestinian "cause" but sure as shit won't give them a place to live. Would you believe, though, that about 5 million Palestinians already live in nations immediately surrounding Israel? Are you expecting them to take another 5 million that currently live in the West Bank (3M) and Gaza (2M)? And, yes, the idea of evicting *only* 2 million Gazans is what's on the table *now*, but that's just temporarily the case. But, sure, let's keep rationally discussing the cold logic of crimes against humanity and, ultimately, ethnic cleansing.

  20. Not sure if you follow the covid/plague/black death/what-have-you thread in DT, but we talked about that county some a couple of days ago. Gaines County isn't your typical, super-duper Christian conservative West Texas wackos county. About half the population are German Mennonites who migrated to the county from their colony in Chihuahua, Mex., in the 90s and early aughts. And "half" might be an estimate that's slightly on the low end. It's the damnedest thing. About 20 years ago, my boss at the time and I went out to Seminole (county seat) for a project. We'd just heard about the Mennonites from our client before the first trip (we were going to have to do a lot of public engagement), who told us they were kind of a quirky group of folks. But, since it was the first trip, we were kind of intrigued, thinking they'd be like the Amish. Not only that, we saw that there was a Mennonite cafe which we decided to hit on our way into town from the Midland airport. But, uhhhh, no, it wasn't some cutesy shop with great coffee and awesome homemade pastries. It ended up being some hole-in-the-wall kind of place full of men, only men, filling up every seat in the place chatting with each other. As soon as we walked in, everyone went silent and watched us go up to the counter: no muffins, no breakfast tacos (burritos...they do burritos in West Texas), and no breakfast options at all as far as I can remember. The guy did, however, pour us some horribly weak, hot dark water out of a thermos into the same styrofoam cups everyone else had. And while he was busy doing so, chatter around the cafe started up again, and I can tell you it was really bizarre hearing a bunch of crusty white guys (and they were all white) speaking a weird mix of German and Spanish. Later on, we were told emphatically that our Amish-like expectation was pretty far off and that these guys were largely dirt farmers and carpenters who did a good bit of drug smuggling on the side, running back and forth between Gaines County and Chihuahua. They just also happen to not believe in a lot of modern American culture, but they were okay with adopting a lot of modern technology. The women are kept home with the young kids and the school-aged ones don't really participate in any public schooling beyond 8th grade. I'm sure they mostly rely on their own religious country schools by now, regardless of age, since they've been embedded there for at least a good couple of decades. Of course, they're all likely unvaccinated to boot. Edit: Oh, Brisket gave us a glowing recommendation on this stuff, though, which is nice.
  21. Closer than that: Buffalo is directly across the Niagara River from Canada. So, it'd be akin to someone in El Paso saying they feel more closely tied to Juarez than Mississauga, Ontario. Well, yeah, no shit, lady.
